FTA: If someone went on TV speaking English with an unusually high-pitched voice, I doubt they'd get their own Tumblr chronicling all of their vocal patterns.

You're new to the intarwebs, aren't you?

So let me sum up the article: it's ok to make fun of Italians because that's funny but you should use the correct ASL sign for 'pizzazz'.

Yeah, it's almost like people who use ASL have a sense of humor, How dare they!

Some. Not others.

ambercat: Snapper Carr: I don't know a lot about ASL but aren't the exaggerated expressions a pretty common feature - almost like the ASL equivalent of tone?

Yes, and when signing to a large audience, people tend to sign more...broadly? expressively? I'm not sure how to describe it, but it's the ASL version of someone raising their voice so that the farthest people can hear them. She's making sure the farthest away people in the room she's in can see what she's signing, but on camera it looks overly dramatic....Shatnerian, one could say.

So you're saying she Shat herself?

Also, I haven't watched SNL in 15 years, and whoever this person is ensured it will be 16 years this time. Not funny.

The appropriate NSFW ASL response to them.

The real signer was ten times as charming as that pig on Green Acres.

On SNL, I thought it would have been cool if Bloomberg turned to her at the end of the skit and she signed "Live from New York. It's Saturday Night."

Funniest line from last night:
Doctor: You're dying. Do you have any last words?
Aussie lady: I don't know. Kangaroo, I guess.

Jim_Callahan: (1) There are several people that have their own youtube channel solely on the grounds of their annoying, high-pitched voice. No, I'm not going to link them, because frankly the author's ignorance of their existence is to be lauded and encouraged. It's also a common feature of cartoon characters e.g. foamy the squirrel.

(2) There's absolutely nothing wrong with being entertained by someone doing asl bombastically, any more than there's anything wrong with finding, say, Obama's weird pauses entertaining.

(3) The person putting on their srs bzns face and saying that a funny skit can't be funny solely because it features an ASL joke is being way the hell more patronizing toward the deaf than the skit itself could possibly be.
