vygramul: How much do they charge you? Is it a form of fund-raising, or is it more along the lines of cost recovery? I find this strange and interesting.

Gosh, why did Benevolent Misanthrope disappear after you started asking specific questions? I guess we'll never know for sure whether or not he was telling the truth about being charged for signs.

I have a sign for our library's issue in my front yard. It's the first political sign I've ever put up, and, yes, it makes me feel good.

It's part of the election-year jobs program. If you support Obama, it's jobs for Americans. If you're a Rmoney supporter, it's jobs in China.

I hope my (free) Obama yard sign signals to Fox news viewers not to speak to me. In particular the shop owners around the corner with all the racist bumper stickers on the wall behind the cash register.

xynix: Signs are a source of profit for campaigns. It's simple capitalism.

Obama sent me a couple bumper stickers for donating to his cause and I was delighted to see they were made in the USA. My sister got some Romney stickers.. Naturally they were made in China.

The bumpers stickers aren't the only ones.

Good article. What is the motivation to display a political sign in one's yard?

The headline is probably right. Displaying a sign is a sure way to rub your affiliation in everyone's face. And with the level of maturity that currently exists among our citizenry, it is also sure to encourage vandalism and theft. Everyone wins!

Yard signs are usually free.

Not for the Pbama Campaiogn. You have to pay through the nose to get yard signs for those assholes.

I'm Precint Committee officer, and so it's expected that I have signs for every campaign that's relevant to my precinct. I have 7 (helpfully placed by other PCOs), and I'm farking sick of them. I cannot WAIT until Tuesday night when I can take them down.

We always gave them out for free. How much do you charge for them?

We (my precinct and the local campaigns) charge nothing. But the Obama folks do. Are you guys giving out free Obama signs where you are? The Organizing for America office here doesn't.

I worked for OFA in 2008. I'm doing other stuff this year. I have never been charged for a yard sign, nor have I ever charged for them. The only exception is that early in 2008, when they were hard to come by, we reserved them for people who volunteered at least an hour of time. But at all levels, I've never charged for them - from school board races to Obama'08.

How much do they charge you? Is it a form of fund-raising, or is it more along the lines of cost recovery? I find this strange and interesting.

If you have just one sign on your lawn I assume you have an opinion, but I probably already have one of my own.

If you have a collection like (in my area)

Obama-Warren-Khan

or

Romney-Brown-Bielat

I conclude you are a mindless tool of your party without the capacity for independent thought and wish for a constitutional amendment making all races nominally nonpartisan.
