I don't like the idea of most of the stars of MASH being 75+ though. Nothing better happen to Alan Alda.

Yeah, I guess they could get away with that. And I guess war ages a person so they could pull off a guy looking a decade older after a couple years. . I suppose there weren't any kids on the show, that could present a problem.

Nah, there were continuity problems all over the place.

When Col. Potter took over in S4 E1, The date was given as September 19, 1952. However, later on, we had the episode that began with Christmas 1950 and took us all the way through 1951 with Potter commanding the 4077 the whole time (and Winchester as a part of the crew), which would mean the real date for Col. Potter taking over would have had to be September 1950, which means the first three seasons took place in 9 months in 1950 and seasons 4 and 5 took place before Christmas 1950, to get Frank Burns out of the way and Winchester in to make the Christmas episode correct.

Maybe because it was commentary on the Vietnam war using the Korean War as a setting. And it was a popular show, which means it ran longer.

2012-11-04 04:06:01 PM
I always thought that the allure of Hot Lips was that she was rather well-known for her um..reputation.. amongst the visiting Generals and Colonels and those she thought might make General. As feminist as the show wanted to portray itself, it still made the only woman in the main cast a sexpot who slept her way to the top.

That said, Loretta Swit looked great -- until gave herself some decidedly ugly perms.

Ok, here are a couple that I told on the RIP Harry Morgan thread.

One day, my relative was on the M*A*S*H set, chowing down on a delicious candy bar. Harry walked by, swatted her on the rear, and said, "When you hit 200, sell." When AfterMASH was filming, I tagged along with her to the set and met the cast. Between takes, we hung out on one of the sets, and she and another cast member serenaded Harry with "Sentimental Journey". He got all quiet and misty-eyed; I thought he might start weeping.

I'll call her and get some good M*A*S*H stories, and if I don't get them in time for this thread, then the next M*A*S*H thread, I promise.

I can't say about the current box set dvd's, but the original DVD release had the option to disable laugh track by using the English 2 audio track. It makes the show much better IMO. I think I tend to laugh MORE without the LT than with it.

The DVD sets have always had a laughtrack-free audio option, because the BBC asked for it without the laughtrack when they aired the show in the 70s. And, that audio mix survived and Fox decided to include it on the DVD sets. There is no way to watch the show with the horrible laughtrack after seeing it without.

/Again, the BBC saves us all!

2012-11-04 10:06:13 PM
I'm glad we've outgrown the laugh track. I don't even like studio audiences for sit-coms. It's not a situation like stand-up comedy or sketch shows where knowing what is working and what is not is a benefit to the performers. The lines are set, the timing of the lines is actually set, so having to wait for laughter ruins the flow.

2012-11-04 10:07:30 PM

Quantum Apostrophe: I dunno, I'd have tossed one in the chubby Hawaiian nurse.

Coincidentally, that was the plot of one of the final season episodes... the nurses went on a pussy strike until Hawkeye Pierced Nurse Kellye, because she felt bad that she was the only nurse Hawk never stuck his Benjamin Franklin in.

Oh, and if you need the last word on the laugh track, MASH and Cheers writer/producer Ken Levine says watch without the laugh track, no one wanted it on the show in the first place but CBS forced it on them.

So, the BBC/DVD version is how MASH was meant to be seen.

I always preferred Nurse Dish.

Richard Saunders: No thanks, Margaret.

Now, Nurse Margie Cutler, on the other hand, yes. Then and now.

Not even in her M*A*S*H days. Even as a kid I thought she looked like a man in drag.

Now MOVIE Hot Lips?

Amen!

She reminds me of the "twirling tassels" burlesque dame that was hot for Col Potter.

Old Man Winter: IntertubeUser: Harry Morgan also played two different roles on MASH. People forget that he appeared as an a-hole General Bartford Hamilton during the 3rd season.

No, I don't think anyone forgets that. No fan at least. Some might not know that Edward Winter appeared in a role before he did Col. Flagg. Just a random OSI guy. Although, maybe it was Flagg in disguise Who knows?

I loved him as General Hamilton:

"I look forward to your testimony, Captain, but first... a number."
"A 'number', sir?"
"Why yes. Aren't you Paul Robeson?"

Re: No one's posted this yet?

Who is that?

I'm a big fan of M*A*S*H, but I thought Hot Lips wasn't attractive. Her character was mostly a superbiatch (at least in the early years) that screamed all the time and sounded like an air-raid siren. That probably had something to do with it.

DjangoStonereaver: I loved him as General Hamilton

Folks, folks.....Harry Morgan's first role was NOT as a Gen. Hamilton (there was no Gen. Hamilton). The name was Bartford Hamilton Steele. With three E's, not all in a row.

You guys may be thinking of Gen. Hammond, one of two movie characters that carried over to the series, played by the same actor (Gary Burghoff being the other).

Lori Singer looks, interesting. Like she would do bad things to you, in a good way.

MagSeven: I had a friend wait on her once. Apparently this woman is a gigantic asshole.

So, she was just being herself in "S.O.B." then?

I'll take Elvira. The redhead version. Hell, either one.

I love her in that role. I re-watched "Where No Man Has Gone Before" recently, and I've got to say that it holds up pretty well, given that it was made almost a half-century ago. Kellerman and Lockwood both chewed up the scenery in their guest roles, and William Shatner nailed his part on his first time out as Kirk.
