I'm in Delaware for last night's Fark party, and I went to Delaware Park to place my first legal bets on NFL games. They make you do a 3-way parlay, so I have the various combinations of: Colts +2.5, Ravens -3.5, Bears -3.5, Falcons -4.

That's messed up.

My 74-43 season record would rank me third among ESPN's "expert" football prognisticators, which would be impressive if ESPN's staff actually showed anything approaching expertise in football analysis. Then again, I prove on a weekly basis that I'm not particularly good at fleshing out the winners from the losers, either...so instead I try to impress by using big words, solid grammar, and the odd joke here or there. Such prestidigitation served me well during my schooling, oh so many fortnights past.

Week 9 brings new challenges: my Ravens return to action, potential "trap" games abound, and last year's Best in the World squares off against this year's version. But fear of difficult decisions and the long odds against me will stay me from my appointed picks no more than the cries of millions could stave off the remake of Red Dawn; even staring certain humiliation in the face I move forward, just as Sylvester Stallone plunges onward with a second, even a third, installment of The Expendables. Much like the horse-headed man, I strip off my clothes and frolic in the face of danger. And much like the odor emanating from my sneakers, this week's winners are bold:

Denver Broncos at Cincinnati Bengals:
Cincinnati has allowed a 97.9 passer rating to opposing quarterbacks this season, fifth-worst in the league, and this despite having played Jacksonville, Miami, and Cleveland (twice) already. Peyton Manning comes into this one leading the league with a 109.0 rating, an astounding number which he has bested in each of his last four games (including the 138.9 against New Orleans last weekend). While drawing a home game immediately after the bye might help the Bengals, it won't help nearly enough. Manning ends up breaking the statistic and finishing the game with a 347.6 rating as the Broncos roll to an easy win.

Baltimore Ravens at Cleveland Browns:
The Ravens are reeling after injuries further degraded a defense which is uncharacteristically ranked just 28th thus far, and the Browns have won back-to-back home games for the first time since 2009...but you have to go all the way back to the 2007 season to find the last time Cleveland managed a win against Baltimore. Expect a heavy dose of Ray Rice against the 24th-ranked run defense to offset another "meh" road performance from Joe Flacco, while turnovers do more to stop the Browns' offense than anything else the Ravens do.

Arizona Cardinals at Green Bay Packers:
After starting the season 4-0, Arizona now stands at 4-4, while the Packers have won 3 straight to dig out of a 2-3 hole. All that being said, though, this one worries me: there's the uncannily precise "symmetry factor" among NFC West teams which would lead to a Cardinals victory this week, plus Green Bay didn't exactly dominate in their victory against the 1-6 Jaguars last week. This one stays close, but Aaron Rodgers pulls it out in the end with a big assist from his suddenly existent defense.

Buffalo Bills at Houston Texans:
Only the Tennessee Titans have surrendered more points this season than Buffalo has, while Houston has yet to be held under 23 points. Given the way this season has gone that probably means that the Texans win a 13-9 game, but win they shall: the Bills rank dead last against the run, and if nothing else Arian Foster will put up enough offense to take Houston to 7-1. Ryan Fitzpatrick also emerges as a dark horse contender for this week's Jake, facing a Texans defense which has notched 13 picks in just 7 games so far.

Miami Dolphins at Indianapolis Colts:
In a game sure to be watched by dozens of fans, Indy comes in with an impressive 3-1 record at home, while the Dolphins have gone 2-2 on the road. The Colts rank 27th against the run (Miami's greatest offensive strength), but the 'Fins are 27th against the pass, which plays to Andrew Luck posting some strong numbers. With nothing obvious jumping out at me, I was forced to resort to some deep, in-depth analysis to determine the winner (I flipped a coin).

Detroit Lions at Jacksonville Jaguars:
There is no reason on God's green earth why the Jags should win this game. Jacksonville is 0-3 at home, 1-6 overall, they've been outscored by 85 points through their first 7 games, and their offense is so bad it's actually ranked 33rd (the replacement officials were responsible for more points this season). Meanwhile, Detroit comes in having won 2 of their last 3, including a thrilling victory against Seattle last weekend, and they just traded for a Jaguars' receiver...but that final point is the deciding factor, in my opinion, for no move smacks of hapless desperation more than trading for a Jacksonville wide receiver, and one who was averaging just 6.2 yards/catch on 13 receptions at that. Rejoice, Jags fans, for it may be quite a while longer before you get to celebrate another victory.

Chicago Bears at Tennessee Titans:
Not even Evil Cutler's more-evil twin could cause a Bears loss in this game; Chicago is simply the better team in every single facet of the game, and their defense will most certainly Hassle the Beck. Da Bears are prime candidates for a fortyburger this week.

Carolina Panthers at Washington Redskins:
The good news is that Cam Newton might finally post another monster statistical game against Washington's worst-in-the-league secondary, but that still won't be enough to overcome the turnovers and Carolina's inability to stop Robert Griffin and Alfred Morris on the ground. My far-out prediction for this game has the Redskins dominating the time of possession battle to the tune of more than 38 minutes while pulling away for a convincing victory in the second half.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Oakland Raiders:
I hope all you Raider fans enjoyed the re-emergence of Darren McFadden last week, because he's not going to do much against Tampa Bay this Sunday. The Bucs' secondary is certainly exploitable, but I have my doubts that Oakland receivers will hold on to enough balls to take advantage...and the Raiders aren't exactly stout against the pass, either, ranking 20th in yards against and allowing opposing quarterbacks a 95.3 passer rating so far. This rematch of Super Bowl XXXVII may end up in much the same fashion.

Minnesota Vikings at Seattle Seahawks:
Ponder this for a moment: Seattle is one of only 5 teams in the league who remain undefeated at home, while the Vikings are 1-2 on the road. Seattle comes in off a heart-breaking last-minute loss in Detroit, while Minnesota was utterly dominated by Tampa Bay at home. Both teams depend on the run as their bread & butter on offense, but the Seahawks give up more than 20 fewer yards/game and have allowed half the number of rushing touchdowns vs. the Vikes. There will be no skoling in Seattle this week.

Pittsburgh Steelers at New York Giants:
Eli & the Giants sure did look mortal against Dallas last Sunday night and the Steelers come in riding a 2-game winning streak...but those two wins were against Cincinnati and Washington, and I dare say Manning the Younger is a tad bit more prepared to face pressure than Red Dalton or RGIII were. The Giants win legitimately against Ben's boys, assuming they can squeegee the Meadowlands in time.

Dallas Cowboys at Atlanta Falcons:
Looking at the Falcons' remaining schedule, they could realistically be 13-0 when they face the Giants in week 15; this game, along with Arizona (also at home) in week 11 look to be their stiffest tests. I'm just not sure how stiff a test Tony Romo, who has thrown 3 more interceptions than any other quarterback in the league this season, will be. Particularly against an Atlanta defense which is one of just 5 in the league to record more interceptions than touchdown passes allowed.

Philadelphia Eagles at New Orleans Saints:
Well...somebody has to win this one, so at the risk of kicking the sleeping dog where he lies I'll go with the one boasting the #1 passing attack in the league against the one led by Michael Vick. At least we should get to see plenty of offense in this week's Monday nighter.

Dear Princess Sunbutt

Please give Decker, Thomas, Stockley and Tamme secure hands, and don't let McGahee fumble the farking ball...

Also, it would be nice if our Secondary doesn't play as if they had more holes than a block of cheddar cheese

And Peyton with 120+ QB rating would be nice too

DEN -5 @ Cincinnati 47.5
Denver is playing pretty solidly but I like CIN to cover this. CIN, aside from a 3 game losing streak, is only 1-2 at home whereas DEN is 3-1 OTR, so I should be saying DEN but for some reason i think CIN covers this.

@ GB -10 Arizona 43
The North is gonna be a hoot. I think GB will eventually win it. Last week GB had something like 16 or 15.5, just a ridiculous number -- a college football, not pro line. Here, 10 is a ton but, I hate to say it, there's no reason not to believe it is legit. That said, I'm going to pick us to cover as 10 is a ton of points. and the level of "let Lindley play!" here is pretty amazing. I think the kid plays today, whether Skelton just sucks or the O-Line lets someone get through and they go Operation Codename: KTFO on Skelton. Also, tkae the over. This will be like a 31-23 type game.

Miami -1.5 At Indianapolis 43.5

miami outright.....Should be a little bit higher IMO.

Baltimore -4 At Cleveland 43.5
a classic "you have to beat teams you're supposed to beat" game for Balt, sitting 5-2 atop the North; with a one game lead on Pitt (@ NYG) this is a game that Balt needs to win, and will comfortably. 10 points at least.

@ Houston -10.5 Buffalo 47.5
Yeeshhh.......Gonna pick a Rough Buff cover. Buff is 2-2 OTR and 7-1 HOUS 3-1 home....10.5 is a lot and I don't think Rough Buff is that bad. That QB has made some dumb plays this year but I think he'll make better decisions. Cover. Feel pretty strong about this one.

@Washington -3 Carolina 48
Wash outright. Not unlike the Balt/CLE game, this is a game that Wash, if they want any chance at the East (i know they are 4th, but I don't believe in the Giants [their remaining schedule is interesting] and both Dallas and Philly I think are going down), has to win. you have to beat the teams you're supposed to beat and CARO is just awful.

Detroit -6 At Jacksonville 44
the third "you have to beat the teams you're supposed to" game of the slate.....While I think Detroit can write off this season as I think the Bears or GB will win the North (still not drinking the Vikes' purple Kool-Aid), if they want any chance at all to be in the discussion, you have to beat 1-6 Jax (winless at home, by the way). Detroit outright. Under.

Chicago -4 At Tennessee 43.5
Chicago outright. Should be more i think.

@ Seattle -4 Minnesota 38.5
Always a tough place to play....Seattle 3-0 at home.....I think Seattle outright. I haven't seen much of Minnesota but I just don't believe in them.

@Oakland -1.5 Tampa Bay 47
Remember two years ago when Josh Freeman was the new Brees? Me neither. This could also be a pick. OAK is 2-1 at home, TB 1-1 OTR, both are 3-4. Haven't looked at the statistics but.....the Donks I think have the west wrapped up, but Oakland is a questin mark. I guess OAK outright.

@NY Giants -3 Pittsburgh 47.5
I think way too much is being made of the "flying in day of game" angle. how long can that flight be? 60 minutes? and it isn't like they're crossing time zones or for that matter, playing early.

Giants i just don't believe in. I'm not hating ont hem, I just think they've once again gotten some crazy breaks this year and have a deceptive record (ex. A, Dez Bryant's fingers). Pitts, meanwhile, has to keep pace with Baltimore, who has an easy game today. I'm gonna say Pittsburgh, screw the points. I just think NYG is deceptive and Pitts really needs this game.

@ Atlanta -3.5 Dallas 47.5
I said last week TSOtH (that is, "the star on the helmet") effect gives Vegas a 1.5 - 2.5 point lag. While ATL (speaking of deceptive records) is in no way a 7-0 team, and they will be had, I just can't see Dallas being the team to do it. ATL outright.

Monday Night Football Line
@ New Orleans -3 Philadelphia 52
I don't think NO should be favored. For all that PHI is dealingw ith, NO can't stop a nosebleed and while the Eagles are no offensive juggernaut, I don't think they should be dogs here (no pun intended). Phi outright.
