It would break my heart to lose a fuzzy family member to a coyote attack, but coyotes aren't big or particularly ferocious animals. I was serving as a substitute teacher one day when the school I was with walked three classes of children to the local park. A coyote wandered into the park. Normally, I just let them be, but some of the children present were quite small and I didn't feel comfortable with the coyote circulating on the edge of their play area. So, I walked over to it and said "Shoo, shoo." And it did. It was that easy. As much as I want my own pets to be safe, I really don't get coyote hate. And I'm a rat lover who knows full well that coyotes are better than cats at keeping down the local rat population. If my silly, rat-loving self doesn't hate coyotes, no one should.

Wait, so the dog Chihuahua is 12 years old, diabetic, and almost entirely blind? At that point wouldn't it be more humane to just let the coyote have a meal and let the circle of life continue?

Wouldn't the coyote be doing everyone a favor by ridding the world of a chihuahua?

Umm, did it look anything like this?

If so, they weren't playing. They were scoping you out as a target, they're just cautious about it.

Frankly I'm impressed the coyotes are using technology at all. I know they've adapted to urban areas but I didn't think it was this far gone.

Go coyotes.

All chihuahuas should be stepped on until dead and fed to coyotes. Any person who owns a chihuahua, and thereafter (a period of several months) gets another chihuahua shall be euthanized for the greater good.

Well that brought back some nasty memories. I could have gone my whole life without thinking about the time that old lady beat me off with a newspaper, but I had to go read the article with a vague headline.

I was gonna say, coyote are kinda small comparatively, but in the northeast they seem to have bred with the gray wolf. perhaps this is also true in the upper midwest.

Yep, noticed this too. Wasn't quite sure what they were breeding with though.

And they seem to little fear of humans any more either. Don't know if that's a conditioned thing or due to the cross breeding. Either way, the ones spotted around here in the past year or two have been bigger, smarter, and definitely more brazen than in the past.

I think they may be pushing the local fox population down a bit,
abd have done a number on the local varmints. Thankfully, not much in the way of missing pets yet.

Interesting. Out here on the west coast, coyotes are still small, when I read her quote I assumed she was misremembering or exaggerating.

To be fair though, not only do the smallest coyotes still consider chihuahuas bait, even farking HAWKS do, and will make attempts if the dogs are left alone.

One of the most internet-worthy-if-only-I'd-had-a-camera-and-wasn't-driving things I've seen was this little old lady standing on the sidewalk next to a field, dressed like some horrible jersey/florida reject even though she was in the pacific northwest, orange, prune-like skin, giant hair, giant gold jewelry, giant sunglasses, leggings, huuuuge ass, cigarette hanging out of her mouth as she talks on her cellphone with giant fake talon nails, and behind her, this teeeny tiny chihuahua on a leash, barking its head off at a hawk perched on the powerlines above the sidewalk, directly above the dog, staring down at it intently. You could just see that the hawk thinking to itself '.......SOON.'

If it weren't for the leash, I think it would have made the attempt. The lady of course, was totally oblivious.

Does being 3 pounds and quivering count as having dying technology? Sure those attributes will help the chihuahua die, but as they are inborn traits I don't think they count as tech.

The size may be exaggerated, but I don't doubt the behavior.

I've known at least two people who had their leashed dogs attacked by coyotes while out for walks. Not little hors d'oeuvre dogs either - one was an 80lb lab.

I've also seen a pair of coyotes stalk one of my neighbors while he walked his dogs down the street. I had to go warn him as they were crisscrossing the road from cover to cover, trailing him by about 20 yards and he had no idea.

Then I've also had to run off a 'yote I spotted watching my son (who was a toddler at the time) while he played on his swingset. That one didn't seem particularly eager to leave either, he'd run just a little ways then check to see if I was still watching.

Coyotes just aren't as scared of people as they used to be or ought to be. We've spent too long quietly watching them and even feeding them, instead of doing our damndest to remind them that we're the apex predators and not to be farked with.
