Please consider helping in this spur of the moment internet effort - to show some support for the folks in Staten Island - who are using social networking to organize, take matters into their own hands and help themselves.

Figured getting their number of "likes" through the roof would let them know people are thinking of them. ! :-D

Doesn't cost anything but a few moments of your time.

Anyone wanting to do a little more can get Rebuild Staten Island up on any other social networks they use.

Help get the word out online about Rebuild Staten Island !

Let's show 'em some support !

(Also, at the Rebuild Staten Island site - there's a fun pic of Ben Stiller serving up food at a disaster relief feeding station in Brooklyn, New York. Way to go Ben!)

You didn't build that.

No I didn't create the site.

Did I post it wrong or say something that made it sound like I did?

Geez.

My apologies if it seemed that way.

Someone at Rebuild Staten Island was hoping to get the number of "likes" up and had asked for help getting the word out.

So figured I'd see if it could be put up on FarkUs and hopefully some folks on Fark would help get their tally up quickly.

Thought if their numbers skyrocketed - really fast - it'd make them feel good.

There's lots of great people on Fark and figured if they knew they'd help.

Oh, I bet it was the "spur of the moment" comment.

I'd meant the unofficial "internet effort" in getting the word out about Rebuild Staten Island online being a "spur of the moment" thing.

The people there are doing hands on clean-up.

Thought it would be cool - if when they finished for the day - they suddenly had a huge number of "likes" - when they checked their site.

Guess I should have phrased it differently. Sorry about that.

Anyhow. If anyone out there is willing - let's help 'em get their "likes" up.

Coming together to use commonly available resources for the common good. Sounds pretty commie if you ask me.

I read that companies sell those likes by letting them get huge and then changing the subject suddenly

Staten Island is Sandy's Bayou La Batre. They got spanked like everyone else, and no one cares because more important (or telegenic) places got spanked.

Actually, it's just like going to Church. One minute you're angry and feeling impotent at not being able to make the world a better place, one click or prayer later, BINGO!

Conscience eased, salvation guaranteed in the after life, able to bad-mouth slackewrs who haven't helped, regain the ability to pass judgement on those who didn't help themselves in the first place.

It is in fact a thing of genius - just like regular prayer but you don't even have to leave your computer. Brilliant.

In Dutch and German it means city not state. Staaten Eylandt was City Island. Wonder why New Amsterdam wasn't City Island.

On another note, our buses always look like that, especially on shopping day.

Haven't heard the expression "shopping days" since the 1960's, it brings back memories of 6 oz. Coco-Colas.

"Show Staten Islanders who are 'helping themselves' that folks support them."

If they're "helping themselves", then they don't need us, subby. We should just get out of their way and let them get on with it, rugged individualists that they are.

/that was an exceedingly stupidly-phrased headline. Given that you're in this thread, I'll take the opportunity to point out that you should be embarassed for taking such an idiotically partisan stance at a time like this.

2012-11-03 04:54:22 PM
If Mayor Bloomberg seemingly doesn't give two shiats (seeing as he was still ALL FOR running a marathon and consuming city resources to support that...at a time when it'd be least appropriate); why should I?

I know that's really black and white...maybe even outright mean and selfish, but I'm just being honest...

I was going to make a comment along the lines of "Liking something on Facebook doesn't do anything, what they need is money and supplies."
But maybe some company will give money so they can use the likes for advertising. And that would actually give this whole thing a point.

Why should we care about an area in one of the richest regions in the world, who aside from some homes by the shore, are largely untouched and will have their power back on by Sunday? Are the tens of thousands of Staten Islanders suffering in a dome living with the dead? Are they having to go house to house to count the bodies?

Helping each other out is called being a good neighbor, do you want a f*cking cookie for doing what basic human culture demands?
