You're saying these individuals who believe animals are equal to or have greater value than humans are...unbalanced? The hell you say!

More evidence that folks who believe in animal rights are a bunch of nutjobs.

Animal Rights activists - The most obvious group of terrorists wandering the streets freely you will ever encounter. The only ones that aren't are so mentally unstable and in touch with their "fluffy" side, they might as well be used for shampoo testing anyway.

I have a theory about what I call "do-gooder groups." All of them, from the local animal shelter to the PTA to organized religion.

They attract crazy, narcissistic people. Any good that might come out of them is destroyed by all the people who only join them for a power trip. It's too bad, really. And the reason I never join any of them. Let society decay around me. I'm not going to be guilt-tripped into hanging around with a bunch of nuts ever again.

One thing worse than animal rights activists.

Calling the grammar police to Fark thread #7415466. We have reports of misused homonyms and improper conjugation of the verb "to be."

What frightens me are the people who decry animal research in favor "real" research, like one of the commenters at the link. Without animal research there would be no new medicine. Sorry. That's the price of civilization.

You seem to have a huge narcissistic streak going right through you, buddy. You've stated the reason you don't join any groups is that you feel superior to them...how crazy and narcissistic is THAT?!

See, that's the thing about narcissism...the narcissistic are the last people who believe they are...narcissistic.

I don't join them because I don't like being surrounded by people with big egos. If my ego somehow needed fortifying, I'd be all over that. Nowhere did I say that I think I'm "better than them." I'm just not like that.

You seem to have a lot invested in putting me down, some random person on the internet, to the point where you'd misrepresent my words to support your own agenda. Hmmm. So how many do-gooder groups do you belong to?

They should either volunteer for medical/clinical/pharmacological trials of new medicines/procedures that have never been tested before, or wear one of those medical alert bracelets that says "I refuse all medical care since it was all tested on animals first."

I've ignored animal rights activists since the early 80s, when I'd routinely see them waving signs protesting animal testing...while wearing 10 lbs of makeup, their hair dyed colors unknown to man and wearing more leather than a herd of buffalo. And it only got worse when I learned that the vice-president of PETA is an insulin-dependent diabetic who uses bovine-based insulin because she can't use synthetic. You know what, pro-animal people? F*ck you. You're either hypocrites or you're stupid, and I've no use for either.

Very hard to do. I used to do it all the time, until laws (both federal and state) banned women in their reproductive years from participating. Now, it's even hard for men in jail or death row to participate (there's actually a prisoner's lobby here to try and change that).

Operating on conscious monkeys to understand consciousness is sick. The blinded cat fetus experiment is sick. There are humans blind from birth who willingly join studies - study them. If their parents are a little reluctant to let them be studied from birth, so be it.

We're civilized enough. Could stand to regress a little.

And yes, lots and lots of research goes on without using non-human animals, thankfully. You just don't know much about the subject.

I don't like all animals equally. Imposing equity or equality above rationality doesn't work as an ethical system for me.

There is no system for evaluating the efficacy of a new drug or vaccine that doesn't involve animal experimentation, not without severe gaps in knowledge. Predictive software just isn't there yet, and cell-based systems never tell the full story. You want to try a new drug in a human without animal trials first?
