The headline sort of implies that there's a difference between a brothel and a massage parlor.

Well at least this article is not as shame filled as they are when they bust the massage parlors here in Virginia. Here in NoVa, specifically Loudoun County, the Loudoun County Sheriff's office went all gung-ho a couple years back and shut down like 6-10 Asian Massage Parlors. Not only did they publish the names of the women, but the published the names of the unlucky bastards who were in there at the time of the raid...and charged them with some old Virginia law: "frequenting a bawdy place"

Happy ending massage parlors can be found with extreme ease on craigslist.com, backpage.com, etc. I gotta say - I am somewhat perplexed with the inconsistency of enforcement, like how nothing will happen for YEARS, then boom...8 places busted in a matter of 72 hours, then nothing again for a few more years. I mean, if these places really are the hotbeds of human trafficking, fronts for the Asian mobs, drug rings, etc...I would think that it would behoove law enforcement to actively shut these places down...

I give them a pass because they have a clickable map instead of assuming we all knew where it was based on "Sun City" and "Peoria". She could have been from Illinois and her brothel was in South Africa.

Sun City is a census-designated place and unincorporated town in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States, that is within the Phoenix metropolitan area. The population was 38,309 according to the 2000 census. Its adjoining sister city is Sun City West. Both cities are retirement communities popular with snowbirds.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 0.4% under the age of 18, 0.3% from 18 to 24, 2.0% from 25 to 44, 17.5% from 45 to 64, and 79.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 75 years. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 69.8 males.

In America the enforcement of prostitution laws is so sporadic because the complainants are so remote from the crime.

In the case of crimes like assault and theft, you generally have a victim who is keen to report it right away and provide lots of evidence and testimony, so enforcement can be consistent. OTOH, no one connected with prostitution wants it reported and prosecuted. What drives enforcement efforts is usually complaints by third parties who have little useful evidence and less motivation. These victims are usually just offended by overt signs of sex work (e.g. hookers touching up car windows where THE CHILDREN can see them, etc.) and they're pacified when it looks like it's been made to go away.

In a couple cites I've lived in, the cops made a policy of basically chasing the hookers around town. That is, once the complaints of flagrant hooking in a neighborhood reached a critical level, they'd crack down in that neighborhood driving out and dispersing all the ladies and satisfying the citizens -- until the hookers found another place to congregate and the cycle would begin anew. I got the impression that the cops were not engaged in a concerted effort to root out a (supposed) social evil like narcotics, but an as-needed effort to suppress a public nuisance like loud music.

Yeah, if I recall correctly, the places that got busted here a couple of years ago were a result of mostly other businesses calling in the complaints. One of the busts was because a UPS person went in the back door to deliver a package (wow, that is full of euphemisms) and all the girls were in lingerie. Cops got called, they hired some random dudes to go in and get a happy ending to confirm that they were really running a brothel, and within the week, they were shutdown.

And once one or two bust of massage parlors make the news, then people start calling in tips of other suspected massage parlors.

But here in Cook County where I live, back in 2008 the Cook County Sheriff went on a well publicized crusade against prostitution and specifically targeted massage parlors whether or not the local law enforcement cooperated or not. I remember I was watching the news at a friends house when the Sheriff had a press conference outside of the first one that he ordered a raid on. My friends brother, who used to be a cop in a neighboring town, said that the place was known for years as being a fark house, his words, and the cops didn't do anything because they were quiet, didn't bother anybody, wasn't known as being a brothel to anybody except for customers and cops, and most of the cops from the area were probably customers. He also said the rumor that was floating around was that the place was specifically targeted because a council woman from the town that it was in hired a PI to follow her husband and the PI caught him going there. She then went to the local police to have it shut down and they did nothing, so she went to the Cook County Sheriff and that place ended up as the first place on the Sheriff's list.

Fairfax County shut down a few places a few years ago...they used undercover cops, not citizens. They were supposed to wait for the offer for a handy during the massage, decline and report back to HQ. They ended up getting handys. If I recall correctly, the cases got thrown out of court by a very pissed off judge, people were fired, put on administrative leave, etc, and some divorces ensued.

Smashed Hat: The headline sort of implies that there's a difference between a brothel and a massage parlor.

Actually, there can be. I know a few legitimate* professional masseuses who work primarily in therapeutic sports massage that are very pissed off that so many massage parlors are just fronts for places that offer just happy endings to places that are full on brothels. So many are fronts that the legitimate ones are in the minority and have to make clear that they do not offer anything more than massage. Clients walk in assuming they will get more and leave pissed off if they do not.

Legalizing and regulating prostitution would make is safer for society and everyone involved and not involved. And would allow folks like legitimate* massage therapists to not be hassled and saddled with a reputation they do not want or deserve.

/*How sad is it that the term 'legitimate' needs to be added?

One of my wife's very good friends is a receptionist at a legit and expensive day spa/massage place. She says that she gets a call at least once a day with the guy on the other end basically saying this: "Uhh, hi...ummm...I need a massage...do you all...ummm..you know...add in any extras at the end of the massage...???"

She says shes gotten to the point of shaming the guys for being gross and possibly unfaithful. Apparently, because they have caller ID, they are able keep a log of the numbers that call in asking for this and they have started banning those people from making appointments.

They shut one down here this summer. Place opened in a strip mall and got shut down maybe 2 months later. Apparently the girls were asking every male customer if they wanted a happy ending.

FTFA:The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office initiated an investigation after receiving a complaint about employees at a massage parlor near 103rd and Grand avenues performing sexual acts for money.

Was it not good enough?

Wait a massage parlor got busted as a front for a brothel and it's not run by Asians? Sounds like some pissed-off Triads tipped off the police.

Endive Wombat: Happy ending massage parlors can be found with extreme ease on craigslist.com, backpage.com, etc.

If it were legal and regulated, I'd bet you'd have less of a problem with human trafficking. Because it's illegal and underground, human trafficking thrives.

The only difference between a massage parlor and a brothel are the body parts that get massaged.

Has anyone pointed out that massage parlors and brothels are the same thing?

Fark that site: they want to plant like 50 cookies on me.

AbbeySomeone: Hey maybe it's just me but when I hear 'preforming sex acts in echange for money' I iimagine either a trained seal tossing a ball at a fat, naked man or a scene from a stage presentation. If they were just acting why were they arrested? Why all the hate for the perfroming arts?

Throw her a fish after lmao. You're funny.

Endive Wombat: Tarl3k: Could I please get MORE annoying ads on that website please?

The fact that you do not have AdBlock and or NoScript installed is your own damn fault.

Good grief, no kidding. I haven't seen ads on the internet in years.

Here:
