Sampled both Rifftrax and Cinematic Titanic. Gotta give the nod to Rifftrax.

Which is odd since I prefer Joel. But really, life is too short to discriminate

Same here. Well I started watching MST3K in the last 2 seasons so Im biased to mike, but I tried watching C.T. and their choice of movies kinda turned me off.

Personally I think they should hurry up and do a mega-merge and mix and match em. I think that would be awesome.

I really think that's because Rifftrax has Mike, and CT doesn't. Or maybe it's one of those situations where the live shows are better because the riffing chemistry is solidifying between them as they go along.

But somehow, as much as I love the Mike/Kevin/Bill incarnation of MST3K (and Rifftrax) I always fast forward through the Pearl/Brain Guy/Bobo skits in those episodes. Just can't get into them.

I'm firmly in the Mike camp, but I'll say that Joel's sketch segments were better than Mike's on average. Though, I'm guilty of fast-fowarding through those segments to get to the movie. That's not to say there aren't great sketches, but most of them fell flat for me.

When it comes to RiffTrax versus Cinematic Titanic, though, there's no contest. RiffTrax is a thousand times more entertaining and has a much greater diversity of content. The shorts alone are golden. Seriously, you can buy them for a buck a pop, it's more than worth it. On top of that, it's just way more fun to watch them riffing newer and more well-known flicks, and the celebrities and live events are icing on the cake. Neil Patrick Harris riffing Willy Wonka is one of the greatest things ever put to media in the history of mankind.

/shorts are ALWAYS the best thing they produced, though
//your soul belongs to Coily

Mike never had the loopy genius Joel had. Plus Joel's burner persona was perfect for the premise.

Agreed, though I love every aspect of the show too much criticize any of it. I'm a huge fan of Rifftrax, if you close your eyes it's basically the MST3K guys*.

Trace had to make Crow's voice higher, but Corbett and Murphy both use their normal speaking voices for their characters. Their voices are naturally humorous, and those two guys really found their niche in life. I love how they not only riff the movies, but bring their own dopey personalities into the mix. They're seriously funny dudes.

*Well, the last three seasons, at least.

You guys have never heard of separating an entertainer's work from his politics? You expect your comedians to all have the same views as you? In my case, I know that Kevin Murphy is an annoying liberal, and probably contributed many left-wing zingers to MST3K, but I ignore it 'cause he's farking funny. I don't follow the show religiously, but there seemed to be a good period with Joel, then Mike came along and it was excellent, then, at some point in time, the show kinda started to suck, especially the skits. I remember there being an obese lady that became one of the regulars, and the two (sucking and her) seemed to line up.

What happened, oh MST3K fans?

The biggest advantage Mike has is that the movie selection got much better, especially in the Sci-Fi era. So many of the Joel era movies were just plain boring, and all the riffing on Earth couldn't save them. The Mike era had more movies that were likeably incompetent. The result was more good Mike episodes.

Also, despite the invention exchange being Joel's thing, Mike did the best one: Ricocheeeeeeeeeeeettttttttttt BBQ Sauce.

It's not really bold.

//Also, that's one of my favorite MST3K episodes ever. Dahhhhh dap dah dahhhhhhhh. Despite being one of the most boring movies ever made, but the riffing was top notch.

I watched Mike and James Lileks riff Spider Man 3. Both are conservative guys, and the first (and almost only) political barb was aimed at Dick Cheney. Meanwhile Frank Conniff is routinely tweeting and talking in left-wing memespeak -- but he's still hilarious on Cinematic Titanic and was a blast on MST3k.

I like both but prefer Mike. He had a much stronger selection of movies during his tenure. Also, by the time he took over as host, the writing staff was really on a roll.

Unfortunately, Pearl was not nearly as entertaining as Dr. F, and Sci-Fi's insistence on a serial plot for the host segments made them pretty bad. As much as I enjoy the movies, I can't stand re-watching the host segments from the Rome arc.

I've always thought that Trace was the MVP of MST3K, so I was sure CT would kick butt and potentially take business away from Rifftrax. But CT got off to a rocky start, mainly due to disappointing movie selection (except for Doomsday Machine). It has improved lately, however; Alien Factor and Rattlers are pretty awesome. I think the "old, crappy movie" model has greater potential for funny than the blockbuster one, but Rifftrax has shifted towards that lately as well. Unless CT starts releasing DVDs more frequently, they'll never really affect Rifftrax.

Not that it's really a zero-sum game. I'll buy whatever either of them releases.

Let's put it this way... I think he did an interview or two years back for conservative websites, and that's been the reason for many an asshole who can't let politics go to point out ZOMG MIK IZ A REPUBLUTAERD!!!" in every MST3K thread.

Looking at the combined MST3K/Rifftrax output, you'd never know or care what his political leanings are.

Is he still? I didn't want to mention it, but I read an interview with him a while back and he was total Libertarian flake, maybe even worse. I think he was going off on Clinton for some stupid reason that was common at the time. Makes me hard to like him, sadly enough.

He and Mike seem to have no problem working together after all these years despite their political differences. Get the sticks out of your asses why don't you.

I think people find it strange because as a general rule, conservatives aren't funny. But I suppose there are exceptions to every rule.

JosephFinn: I was at the Rifftrax Live in September, and I think I was actually annoying the people next to me from how I was wheezing at trying to catch my breath. Something about the Norman short, with him trying to just...get...out...of...the...airport....parking...lot...was killing me.

Oh, Norman. (Amazingly, it appears to be part of a Showtime promo from 1980.)

You mean you missed the Norman prequel at Birdemic live?

Has anyone figure out what the point of those films are? They seriously don't seem to teach or convey anything other than "be happy your life doesn't suck as bad as this guy's".

I wouldn't be surprised if it's a series that ends with Norman up in a bell tower.

Differences between Joel and Mike that I NEVER see mentioned are these:

Yes, Mike wrote for Joel, but Joel never wrote for Mike. Who know what a Mike segment written by Joel would have been like.

Joel treated the premise of the show with more integrity than Mike - it was after all Joel's idea. I think Joel wanted in part to have a "universe" of his own, like STAR TREK and LOST IN SPACE.

Mike, on the other hand, spent most of his episodes trying to break the mold - until he saw that it was fine the way it was. At first Mike spent many episode trying to escape the SOL, or switching places with Dr. Forrester or Pearl, or just leaving the SOL all the time.

In my opinion, Mike did more films that didn't "deserve" the stigma of "bad movies." We can argue about that, but some lesser films aren't necessarily bad.

At the end of the series you can see that after all this experimentation, he fell back to what worked, which is what Joel created in the first place.

Sadly yes! Was it his entire four hour flight and his attempt to get a scotch?

whizbangthedirtfarmer: I don't follow the show religiously, but there seemed to be a good period with Joel, then Mike came along and it was excellent, then, at some point in time, the show kinda started to suck, especially the skits. I remember there being an obese lady that became one of the regulars, and the two (sucking and her) seemed to line up.

What happened, oh MST3K fans?

Sci-Fi Channel happened. When they picked up MST3K, they demanded an ongoing storyline outside the theater and that they only do sci-fi, horror, and fantasy movies (that part didn't bother me, most of their best episodes involved one of them). At one point Sci-Fi wanted them to cut down the number of skits.

Eh, Film Crew is just a Rifftrax prototype.

Fun facts about Film Crew...

The episodes were created for Rhino, but remained unreleased for a couple years because Jim Mallon threatened to pull the license for MST3K from Rhino if they dared to release something from other riffers that he didn't own. So, Shout Factory picked up the Film Crew stuff and released it a few years later, after Rifftrax had began, but before Shout acquired the MST3K license.

And, since Shout eventually got MST3K, Film Crew sets had been destroyed and Rifftrax was a success, no more Film Crew episodes were ever made.

/The More You Know... how much of a prick Jim Mallon is.

I
I started watching MST3K when I was 7, it was being replayed on 2 local TV stations, Wednesday night at 7 and Saturday morning at 10.

I cried my eyes out when I found out Joel left and then when they were cancelling the series, both times.

I went to cinematic titanic showing and now I have to go to a rifftrax.

You think disgust is something born of rage. I've known this this for 20 years. I don't care anymore. I've accepted that schools of thought can effect people profoundly while not being based in reality. Cultist behaviour is vile, depressing and controlling. But it's not shocking. I don't know what or why you're commenting but you seem to be a newcomer.
