The most damning part is that people actually fall for it.

This is getting farking ridiculous.

I think, if Silver "wins" this election too, he will have an ethical imperative to stop. Foretelling the future and being accurate at it is a recipe for making people increasingly desperate to create a change.

Like with anything, he's proving that a well made model has a fine enough accuracy to be a useful tool. Not to mention he's shown it can be applied to multiple fields. That can only be helpful.

The problem is people taking advantage of the tool to do evil. And really, our country needed election reform before Silver came on scene.

I read about this in the paper today. Even here in Oregon, a solidly blue state, we had a report of an election volunteer filling in any blank votes on mail-in ballots for Republican candidates.

This shiat is going to be messy.

You want my opinion? No? Too bad.

SCANTEGRITY
CONDORCET

Also, have electors appointed so that the winner takes two of the electoral votes in each state they win, and have the rest determined proportionally. States with only 3 electors become winner-take all, and there's still a tremendous benefit for wanting to appeal to a large number of states (150 electoral votes go to the winners of those states: 2 to the winner, and you're guaranteed to get at least one more from each state you win), but there's also a disincentive to ignoring states that you don't expect to win.

The flipside of desperation is hopelessness. "Silver forecasts my state to go [color]... no point in me voting". There's that, too.

This is just what can be expected when politicians crank up the partisan rhetoric to frenetic levels and politics doesn't just incorporate absolutist religion, it becomes absolutist religion. The "true believers" get it in their mind that it's okay to destroy the village in order to save it.

Or, you know, maybe this was just a Democrat trying to make their opponents look bad.

It's SO HORRIBLE what ACORN did - they TURNED IN voter registration forms and LEFT IT UP TO the officials to verify they were eligible (y'know, doing their f--king job) so they DIDN'T accidentally throw out any registrations from real people. They were *too* inclusive.

jcooli09: Did I miss the part where the party was identified?

They didn't identify the party of the "collector", but given that this happened in Very Liberal Boulder, we can make a pretty good guess.

How liberal is Boulder, you ask? In 2008, they went for Obama 72-26 over McCain. Their very popular congressman is an openly gay, very intelligent Jewish guy, none of which is controversial in Boulder, much of which surely pisses off the right-wingers.

So, it's just a guess, but if you're pulling dirty tricks in Boulder, you're probably trying to disenfranchise Democrats. If this was happening in Colorado Springs, I'd say you were going after Republicans.

2012-11-03 07:44:53 AM
To be clear, here in the mountains, I told an Obama volunteer that I was going to do the mail in ballot, and she very nicely offered to come back later in the afternoon to give me a ride to the post office so I could fill it out and mail it. When I asked (rather poorly) if she would do this even if I wasn't voting for Obama, she replied that she cared more about the process of getting everyone out to vote than the outcome.

Sick no matter which party does it. If you can't win fairly, maybe you should change your ideas so you can? After all, the only thing either party wants is to stay in power. For the most part, they don't give a fark what position they need to take in order to do it.

TV's Vinnie: I really don't need to guess which political party they're doing this for, do I?

Sure the Republicans have spent the past year pointing fingers and accusing everyone else of voter fraud when there's no evidence of such a thing, and sure the Republicans hired a consulting form with a history of voter registration fraud and had them change their name so they could use them in this election, and sure Republicans connected to that group have already been caught maliciously attempting to influence the election, but you're right. You don't have to guess which party.

It's probably those shady ass democrats. We all KNOW the only reason they win any elections at all is due to voter fraud.

In Texas it appears to be illegal to possess a mail-in ballot, even just to put in a mail box, if you are not a family member.

That would apply here, even though it's been used to send people to prison for years for helping a neighbor by just walking out the door to the mailbox with the item.

On the other hand, just print up a few, misspelled fake ballots and hand them out to those "helpful people at the campaign." while you stand in the door way and call 911 about an attempted home invasion and theft of US Mail giving a description of the campaign worker.

In Oregon, it's completely legal for a campaign volunteer to collect your mail-in ballot at your door and drop it off for you.

So this situation could be nefarious or it could simply be a staffer/volunteer from Oregon who doesn't realize the rules aren't the same in Colorado.

Suck it Barry Fartbongo! The statisticals don't lie once they've been harmonized.

I thought that Rmoney would add insult to injury and take Fartbongo's home state as well in those statisticals...

Mr. Coffee Nerves: Well, what am I *supposed* to do? Give my ballot to one of those union thugs in the blue uniforms who keep bringing me letters full of bills the "government" expects me to pay, as if my learning the Secrets to Picking Up Women the Liberals DON'T Want Me to Know isn't my Constitutional right?

Okay, that was funny.

But serious PSA to any fellow Coloradans who still have their mail-in ballots: all ballots must be received by 7pm Tuesday. There will be mail-in ballot drop off boxes at polling places, but they still need to be in their signed and sealed envelope just like if you were mailing it, so don't leave that at home.

If you mailed yours recently and aren't sure it will arrive by Tuesday, you can check the status online - and you can always vote provisionally at your polling place.

Based on the fact that this hasn't made national news, I'm gonna have to guess this was another "overzealous Republican staffer"?

Terrified Asexual Forcemeat: Pfft!: If you're dumb enough to fall for this you probably shouldn't be voting in the first place.

So vote Republican

"Republicans: it's your fault for letting us rape you."

"Republicans: We have no shame, so don't even try."

Voter suppression tactics like this should be ruled treason and prosecuted as such - with firinq squads.

King Something: It speaks volumes of the GOP that so many people are assuming by default that Republicans are doing this.

Where else would one find both boldness and a complete absence of personal integrity but the rank and file of today's GOP?

Dr.Mxyzptlk.: Why don't they just call them on the Obamaphone and take the vote over e mail ?

Why do people keep calling them Obamaphones when the program was started under Bush?

/Because Bushphone sounds stupid?

This bootstrappy-lady was shocked, SHOCKED, when those lazy inneficient government union workers managed to notice that she was attempting to vote twice, even though she had driven all the way to a different polling station.

Stay classy Republicans.

zerkalo: Happening in Seattle, too

Non-story. Overzealous lovers of the process

Why would anyone give them their ballot and why does anyone in the GOP think this would be a good idea? I would honestly be tempted to pull a gun on anyone who comes to my door asking for my ballot.

Smoking GNU: You know, you'd expect this kind of BS from some wasteland post-civil war African craphole country, not from the supposed "Leader of the free world", if that term means anything anymore these days.

Oh man are you reading my mind?
The worst part is some who are manipulating the system this way will use "defending our freedom" and "spreading democracy" as the justification for the next war. Makes me sick.

Yea, they're spreading democracy alright.

Malacon: organizmx: Skleenar: link to the Oregon incident.

GOP poll worker was filling in a straight GOP ticket for all the bubbles left un-filled.

farking un-american shiatholes.

How long will he be going to jail for

According to this follow up, up to 5 years + a $125,000 fine.

And it's a She.

The ironic bit is I think she's going to loose her right to vote for that time, felon right?

Some weapons-grade derp in the comment section to that. Did you know thousands of Blacks were paid by ACORN to vote 2 to 200 times? The more you know!

And they laughed when they said voter ID laws wouldn't prevent voter fraud.
