Pretty much all Rock & Roll is music ripped off old Black bluesman.

Seriously, subby. You need a bigger database. There are bigger injustices than this to burn your candle for.

// I personally might have chosen to highlight the link to the new video of Kashmir from the 12/07 performance at the O2.

What the hell is a lead zepplin? Wouldn't it crash if it was made with lead? An aluminium or titanium zepplin sounds like a much better idea.

Great band, but they ripped songs off from black and white alike, and denied it, and even manufactured stories from where the inspiration came, and only until they were brought to court did they admit or bought the robbed parties off.

Very rarely do I hear an "alternate take" that doesn't just sound like the same song that they messed up on during recording.
It would be interesting to hear, but I'm not buying something I already have on vinyl, cassette, and CD.

Oh. My. God. That is awesome. I saw Plant in concert in 1989 and it sounded like his voice was almost gone. Must have been a bad night because he sounds amazing here. Wow...

Saw Plant in Clarksdale, MS in August at a Blues Festival. Also there were Bobby Rush, Eddie Cusic, Jimmy "Duck" Holems and many other old Delta Blues guys. Guess he's getting back to his roots.

Though, with something so heavily blues-based, alternate versions could be something very different, especially during solos and fills. Still can't say for sure if it amounts to anything at all.

2012-11-02 09:36:16 PM
That's funny.

I remember Page saying - at the time of CODA and a few other times over the years that there was nothing, NOTHING left in the vaults.

Now he says there are alternative versions of songs and from what he said each album has complete alternative versions.

Amazing.

You would think they had enough money by now.

Listening to Led Zeppelin (and The Stones/Yardbirds/Cream/The Who) inspired me to seek out and buy a lot of music recorded by old Black bluesmen.

Influences---you can't explain that

Well yes.
That's how music works: derivations and borrowing.

Same as it ever was.

Seconded. I happened on the 2007 version of Kashmir on the radio the other day and the smile was on my face for hours after. I had been studiously avoiding listening to any new versions because I was afraid Plant's voice was gone and I didn't want my memories messed with. But oh, is that 2007 Kashmir some glorious business. I am eagerly awaiting the CD release so that I can enjoy it again in my car with no mp3 capability.

But Howlin' Wolf didn't have JPJ on bass, which is what really makes the Zep version.

There are hundreds of alternate takes that have been on bootlegs for years now. I wonder if there are any they have still in the vault.

2012-11-02 10:42:45 PM
As a long-time Led Zeppelin worshiper, I've always been impressed that they never were seduced by the "outtakes and alternate takes" reissue idea. Made the original albums that much more powerful, I have always felt -- as if they just couldn't interfere with perfection. Billions of reissues and remasters later, LZIV still starts with "Black Dog" and ends with "When The Levee Breaks", and there isn't all kinds of "Four Sticks [London demo]" and "Wanton Song [early version, take 7]" BS after it.

But I guess the times are the times, and it was inevitable. I'll be both nervous and curious to hear what they stick on the end of the albums for these reissues... but it's the end of a glorious era of happy ignorance.

Yep. They had no talent, and couldn't write an original, catchy song at all. It's so weird how they were so famous for 12 years. Oh, and still sought after 32 years after they disbanded. Weird.

19 year old me would have agreed, but these days each album is like an offspring to me. None worse than the other, and they all are my favorite in their own way.

Dread Zeppelin came out at a good time. Much fun was had laughing over and over at a Elvis impersonator backed by a reggae band playing Zep tunes 'inna Reggae style'.
