Bloomberg still insisted that holding the race would not require diverting resources from the recovery effort.

IT ALREADY HAS, FARKING SKELETOR-FACED DWARF ASSHOLE.

Every gallon of diesel fuel set aside to run the generators powering the big clock at the Central Park finish line is a gallon that isn't being used to keep space heaters running in buildings with no power. Every bottle of water reserved for The Poland Spring® Hydration Zone at mile 17 is a bottle of water that newly homeless families in Breezy Point would desperately like to have to drink right now.

Guys like Chris Christie, Andrew Cuomo, and Cory Booker behaved like leaders this week. Mike Bloomberg behaved like a CEO.

In terms of who needs that fuel and water more: New Yorkers need it more than visiting jocks. That simple.

AllUpInYa: Atypical Person Reading Fark: Honest Bender: How nice of him to wait until 2 days before the marathon to cancel it... I'm sure no one traveled to attend...

They're reporting that 40,000 out of 47,000 are already there - living in their hotel rooms, paying money, eating out, etc. So the money came, but no race.

How empty must your life be, that you travel to go run in a crowd?

Really, not empty at all. Running allowed me to overcome a crippling disability. There are hundreds of stories out there about what running this course in a crowd has meant to people. Getting to the start line requires thousands of hours running alone. Running NYC was a dream, and traveling there to run with tens of thousands who shared the same goal was a massive privilege. The amazing crowds chearing on even the slowest runner, pushing everyone to do his or her best, we're what made running the NYC marathon a transformative experience.

And that's why I'm glad the marathon was cancelled. I have friends and family who have numbers and trained hard for this for months. They signed up for this because NY and the marathon are so special, and could not have run under these circumstances. I could never run this race if I thought a single person went without water or power because of my partipation, and I could never run it if New Yorkers didn't want it. Objectively, maybe the marathon was bringing in money and not impeding relief efforts - but given the anger surrounding it, running a race which is special primarily because of the goodwill of New Yorkers would have been a mistake. I'm glad they cancelled this event because of what it means - not because it think it's meaningless.

It's press conference press conference press conference press conference when Bloomberg wants to bask in the limelight, but he gets a little blowback and it's all "Bloomberg said in a statement".

What a weasel.

At least Giuliani would take a few questions and get pissy with a reporter and then stomp off in a huff. Shiat, even Dinkins manned up and faced the music once in a while.

Does this mean the race organizers are going to donate all that bottled water that the runners were planning to dump on their heads to the poor New Yorkers who have been without food/water/shelter since Monday?

This is the part that gets me: Bloomberg still insisted that holding the race would not require diverting resources from the recovery effort.

Does he really think his city is already recovered to the point where they don't need every single resource that can be made available? Or does he seriously think that the generators, supplies, and energy spent by volunteers couldn't be spent cleaning up the city, or that the traffic diversions won't add misery to an already messed up traffic grid. Why the hell would he want a bunch of tourists flocking to a city that's still packed with refugees and power outages and closed stores?

For the record:

The political system of America is currently broken.

Money has become entrenched, much like WWI soldiers became entrenched. Many died needlessly. Allegory.

However, of the world humans will most want to inhabit on earth, President Obama is the clear choice; to vote otherwise undermines humanity, and if you care more about business than the people it serves, you have lost touch with the reality of earth business, man, and your business should be broken and destroyed from space.

I can help with that.

From the "real" articles I've read... this is what happened over there. Like I've stated more than once today, I gamed with Sean Smith. He was online at the time the attack went down. First we heard from him of the trouble there wasn't about a protest, it was about gunfire. Next we heard he was dead, and within a week the Sandra Rice, the UN Ambassador was in front of the general assembly complaining about our freedom of speech and blaming a video.

Keizer_Ghidorah: And maybe you can tell me what benefit Obama would have by lying about Benghazi. Every other reasoning I've seen required twisting things into shapes a pretzel would envy.

I'm not sure benefit is entirely the right word. I think (again, my personal opinion based on what was said repeatedly by Carney and Rice) that given the public reaction to Carter's handling of the Iranian hostage crisis, coupled with the economic issues of the time subsequently attributing to Carter's loss to Reagan-- the last thing Obama needed this close to the election is an international incident that could make him appear weak on foreign policy while our economy isn't at it's best. They (the administration) saw the potential for this to reflect very badly on the incumbent, and attempted to spin it in an effort to retain positive public perception leading into the election. (fark, that was a mouthful)

Honestly, I'd call it politics as usual and take no issue if it weren't for the folks that died there. And I do tend to take this incident more personally having known (albeit in a lame MMO capacity) one of the guys killed that day. Last comm we got from him in game was "fark, gunfire." Found out the next day he was dead.

Hopefully I expressed that point in an understandable manner... I've really been sitting in front of this computer too long, and my brain is beginning to show it.

Keizer_Ghidorah: They were, actually, because those are everything the GOP platform is built on. Or did you somehow miss the record amount of anti-abortion and anti-gay laws the right tried to pass the last 4 years, along with trying to redefine rape, deny women health care, and criticize everyone who doesn't kowtow to Israel? As well as the amount of trying to replace science in school with creationism and ID.

Obama called it an act of terror the day after the attack. The ones responsible used the protest against the video as a smokescreen for their attack, and nearly all of them have been dealt with. Every other point about Benghazi being used by the right is taking something and either lying outright or twisting it into a half-truth that suits their ideals. Romney was smirking about it on national television. If they really cared, they'd have said something about the eleven attacks and far more deaths during Bush' terms.

Wow, and I'm the guy regurgitating "retard" talking points. Gotcha.

Here's the deal with me... nothing would make me happier than a true separation of church and state. Leave the bible-thumping, homophobic bullshiat at church and do the job of governing as you (they) were elected to do. These guys are slowing figuring out that every time they spout off some 1950's opinion on rape, marriage or equal rights they get their asses handed to them by the media. If it weren't for the tragically short memory of the typical voter there would be consequences for attempting to govern in accordance with the beliefs of any religion-- as it is a blatant violation of our collective freedom of religion... for the life of me I can't understand why people don't see that.

But hey, because I believe that we weren't told the truth about what, how and why the attack in Benghazi went down for political purposes, feel free to attribute that to me buying into the entire philosophy of some dust-farting geriatrics occupying seats in DC.

Keizer_Ghidorah: Lets talk frankly about internal cleanliness: Keizer_Ghidorah:

Time to try another way of attacking the president. This one quickly turned against you and all those like you. Go back to your plans for turning America into a misogynist, homophobic, ignorant, rich man's paradise, Christian theocracy that declares wars at Israel's beck and call.

Hey, you got a bit of foam at the corner of your mouth, there. Way to make it personal... "me and those like me"? "My plans"? Hate to tell ya this, guy... I voted for Kerry in '04, and Obama in '08. Think I may sit this one out, as honestly I was sick of this election cycle a year ago. Also, I live in a state that doesn't even warrant a visit from either candidate, since we go red every time anyways-- I'm not likely to sway the vote with my ballot.

But hey, assumptions are fun, and make for a good excuse for name-calling.

Which is why you repeated all of the retard right talking points about Benghazi and agreed with them.

Talking points? Dude, I listened to Jay Carney and Susan Rice say it themselves, repeatedly. I am capable of hearing and seeing things and developing an opinion without having it given to me by some talking head. Your remarks about the "misogynist, homophobic, ignorant, rich man's paradise, Christian theocracy that declares wars at Israel's beck and call" were a product of the same sort of cognitive reasoning ability, I'm sure.

Notice how I made the above point without using "retard" or other derogatory terms? It's not that hard to debate without resorting to childish name-calling. You should try it.

I will pause here to say something blasphemous that will likely get me banninated from fark. First off, I dislike Bloomberg and his nanny state policies, but, I actually agreed with him on letting the marathon go through. First off, it would lit a fire under the ass of Con Ed, FEMA and other agencies to get things up and working in all 5 boroughs in a matter of a couple of days. Also, it would have made New York look awesome that they could pull it off. And if having a large sporting event, that will clog up traffic on a Sunday is sucha rotten idea, why is nobody protesting the New York Giants playing the Pittsbugh Steelers the very same day in an area just as badly affected by Sandy?

dickfreckle: Lets talk frankly about internal cleanliness: It's kind of surprising how little it takes to get folks on the left foaming at the mouth. Oh, wait-- no it isn't. They seem to hate everything.

The left foams at the mouth? Have you ever been to FreeRepublic.com, listened to a Rush Limbaugh show, or watched even 5 minutes of FOX news?

Maybe your FB friends are whiny p*ssies, as there was nothing offensive about the photo as you describe it. Whiny p*ssies exist on both sides of the spectrum. If they're that thin-skinned you should probably just ignore them.

It's also cute that you accuse Farkers of politicizing a dog turd. Perhaps you've missed our esteemed GOP leaders and pundits desperately trying to use dead Americans at Benghazi as a means to smear the president. It's disgusting. Clean up your own backyard before criticizing mine.

Yeah, about that... the white house press secretary as well as the UN Ambassador tried desperately for almost two weeks to pin that whole thing on a shiatty youtube video nobody saw, when it was being reported by foreign news agencies that that particular attack had nothing to do with the protests going on at other installations elsewhere in the world. The Libyan president even stated that the attack was coordinated and unrelated to the protests.

Your definition of disgusting seems to differ from mine.I find it disgusting to lie to the families of those that were murdered (as well as the rest of the country/world) simply to keep the president from looking bad. As a side note, I'm a longtime EVE player, and Sean Smith was an acquaintance of mine. Being blatantly lied to regarding the circumstances surrounding his death for political purposes is inexcusable.

But hey, Obama said he was offended that anyone would think that, so I guess it's all cool.
