Aww, I thought Romney had dropped out of the race.

Lets talk frankly about internal cleanliness: Keizer_Ghidorah: And maybe you can tell me what benefit Obama would have by lying about Benghazi. Every other reasoning I've seen required twisting things into shapes a pretzel would envy.

I'm not sure benefit is entirely the right word. I think (again, my personal opinion based on what was said repeatedly by Carney and Rice) that given the public reaction to Carter's handling of the Iranian hostage crisis, coupled with the economic issues of the time subsequently attributing to Carter's loss to Reagan-- the last thing Obama needed this close to the election is an international incident that could make him appear weak on foreign policy while our economy isn't at it's best. They (the administration) saw the potential for this to reflect very badly on the incumbent, and attempted to spin it in an effort to retain positive public perception leading into the election. (fark, that was a mouthful)

Honestly, I'd call it politics as usual and take no issue if it weren't for the folks that died there. And I do tend to take this incident more personally having known (albeit in a lame MMO capacity) one of the guys killed that day. Last comm we got from him in game was "fark, gunfire." Found out the next day he was dead.

Hopefully I expressed that point in an understandable manner... I've really been sitting in front of this computer too long, and my brain is beginning to show it.

Our foreign relations are very strong right now. Libyan citizens marched in protest against the attack and supporting us, and the Libyan military rounded up and nabbed nearly all of those responsible.

Obama called it an act of terror the very next day. The mistake was to keep us constantly in touch with all the information flowing in, instead of waiting until everything was sorted and known better until announcing it (and then the right would complain about Obama withholding things, so either way he'd get sniped at). People below Obama were batting around the "it's a video response"/"it's a planned attack" for a while, until they learned that the attackers used the protests to the videos as cover for their attack. And the right still thinks we have Star Trek-style transporters or something and we should have had a thousand troops in there five minutes before the incident mowing people down indiscriminately, and whining about why don't we have fortress-level security while forgetting that 1) the host country protects the embassy and 2) Republicans cut funding for the defenses we do provide.

AllUpInYa: Atypical Person Reading Fark: Honest Bender: How nice of him to wait until 2 days before the marathon to cancel it... I'm sure no one traveled to attend...

They're reporting that 40,000 out of 47,000 are already there - living in their hotel rooms, paying money, eating out, etc. So the money came, but no race.

How empty must your life be, that you travel to go run in a crowd?

Really, not empty at all. Running allowed me to overcome a crippling disability. There are hundreds of stories out there about what running this course in a crowd has meant to people. Getting to the start line requires thousands of hours running alone. Running NYC was a dream, and traveling there to run with tens of thousands who shared the same goal was a massive privilege. The amazing crowds chearing on even the slowest runner, pushing everyone to do his or her best, we're what made running the NYC marathon a transformative experience.

And that's why I'm glad the marathon was cancelled. I have friends and family who have numbers and trained hard for this for months. They signed up for this because NY and the marathon are so special, and could not have run under these circumstances. I could never run this race if I thought a single person went without water or power because of my partipation, and I could never run it if New Yorkers didn't want it. Objectively, maybe the marathon was bringing in money and not impeding relief efforts - but given the anger surrounding it, running a race which is special primarily because of the goodwill of New Yorkers would have been a mistake. I'm glad they cancelled this event because of what it means - not because it think it's meaningless.

Lets talk frankly about internal cleanliness: bearcats1983:
Hopefully they can find a fair way to reimburse all of the runner's this year.

I'm sure they'll get right on that just as soon as they're done counting corpses. Man, NYC has some ass-backwards priorities, huh?

I'm sure the coroners and cadaver dogs aren't the ones running the marathon.
Is it cancelled now? I checked the marathon website earlier and it was still on, but now that I look again, they have caved to pressure and cancelled it because of all the haters out there.

There are more important things going on at the moment, the marathon can be run later. Besides, what are they going to do, play Frogger with the floating vehicles and debris in the streets? I doubt flooded half-destroyed cities make good running spots.

2012-11-03 05:15:02 AM

bearcats1983: From a runner's perspective, this would definitely piss me off. I'd understand that they cancelled the marathon; however, to cancel it less than 48 hours prior to the gun is shady as hell. Most had already dropped hundreds/thousands on food, hotels, and flights. I mean, you are still in NYC; however, it's a city in disarray right now. This isn't exactly the most ideal "vacation" ever.

To a lesser degree, most of these runners had trained their asses off for the past 3-6 months. I'd be seriously disappointed that the event was cancelled. Imagine busting your ass for an event for months only to have it taken away due to something totally out of your control.

Personally, I agree with the decision to cancel. Hopefully they can find a fair way to reimburse all of the runner's this year.

IF you have the money to be dropping "thousands on food, hotels, and flights" just to go running in a particular place, I have absolutely zero sympathy for you having had your marathon cancelled. Absolutely none.

Well, they could make it a steeplechase or hold it in part of the city that didn't get flooded. Bronx seems relatively unaffected based upon the lack of news about it.

I support this.

Detroit runs a marathon every year and nobody complains about it. Stop whining NYC and accept the new normal.

This 100%. You can get your 'personal best" next year. Take those 'thousands" and donate to those without homes. I get it. you have trained hard. My wife runs marathons. I get it. But when the runners are taking hotel space/ city resources, etc. that could be used for displaced residents.... spend your thousands and go back home.

Its a drag that they had to cancel, but tbose cops and paramedics were needed elsewhere. Is tbe marathon going to refund race fees?

2012-11-03 08:43:29 AM

davidphogan: Good call, but like others posted he waited too late. I can see some airlines allowing people to reschedule the flight, and hotels would allow cancellations, but at least NY gets some sales tax out of the runners who are already there and/or can't cancel.

Oh, and the hotel room tax. They'll still get $2.00 + 5.875% of the rent per day per room rented.

I know of at least one person who got latest mail confirmation that the Marathon was still going, based on that got on the plane, and got off in JFK to the news that it was cancelled.

/stupid 10+ hour flights

Bloomberg, what were you thinking? Oh and I see from the story, he still thinks the marathon could have been run. I gotta wonder if Bloomberg even has a brain.

Well, NYC hasn't been completely drained, dried, fixed and disinfected yet, so the obvious thing to say is:

OBAMA DOESN'T CARE ABOUT NEW YORKERS!

Right, Kanye?

So how is New Orleans coming along?

cryinoutloud: Lets talk frankly about internal cleanliness: But hey, because I believe that we weren't told the truth about what, how and why the attack in Benghazi went down for political purposes, feel free to attribute that to me buying into the entire philosophy of some dust-farting geriatrics occupying seats in DC.

You should probably try reading some real articles about what happened over there, then, instead of just going with your beliefs. I thought you were against that stuff.

That is rich coming from someone who pretends she is living in a war zone since Montana has so many gun owners. You are definitely not against that stuff.

Lets talk frankly about internal cleanliness: dickfreckle: Lets talk frankly about internal cleanliness: It's kind of surprising how little it takes to get folks on the left foaming at the mouth. Oh, wait-- no it isn't. They seem to hate everything.

The left foams at the mouth? Have you ever been to FreeRepublic.com, listened to a Rush Limbaugh show, or watched even 5 minutes of FOX news?

Maybe your FB friends are whiny p*ssies, as there was nothing offensive about the photo as you describe it. Whiny p*ssies exist on both sides of the spectrum. If they're that thin-skinned you should probably just ignore them.

It's also cute that you accuse Farkers of politicizing a dog turd. Perhaps you've missed our esteemed GOP leaders and pundits desperately trying to use dead Americans at Benghazi as a means to smear the president. It's disgusting. Clean up your own backyard before criticizing mine.

Yeah, about that... the white house press secretary as well as the UN Ambassador tried desperately for almost two weeks to pin that whole thing on a shiatty youtube video nobody saw, when it was being reported by foreign news agencies that that particular attack had nothing to do with the protests going on at other installations elsewhere in the world. The Libyan president even stated that the attack was coordinated and unrelated to the protests.

Your definition of disgusting seems to differ from mine.I find it disgusting to lie to the families of those that were murdered (as well as the rest of the country/world) simply to keep the president from looking bad. As a side note, I'm a longtime EVE player, and Sean Smith was an acquaintance of mine. Being blatantly lied to regarding the circumstances surrounding his death for political purposes is inexcusable.

But hey, Obama said he was offended that anyone would think that, so I guess it's all cool.

The real issue isn't that Obama's administration was blaming the video. It's the cover-up they are trying to do of the orders to not go in and help those people at the compound. I don't know why his administration wanted to let these people die, but we deserve to know. This is worse than Watergate and nobody died in Watergate and Nixon was sent packing.

tons of people running in the park this morning. i ran by the finish line during my daily jog. last year i volunteered at the 5k race the day before the marathon (which also ends at the same finish line) thinking I would cross it for real next year. well its next year. maybe next year for reelz.

you have to admit the people they've shown on tv pleading for help set guidos back at least a generation.

The only problem is that now the orders are a matter of public record. People just want to know why. I'm fairly certain somebody under Obama is trying to make him look bad. People want to know who and why would Obama protect him/her. Does that person have something on him that's so bad that Obama would do anything for it to not come out? What is he he willing to do next year or the year after to keep whatever it is secret? Could any of this explain why he has doubled down on keeping/expanding Bush's policies despite pledging to change them during his campaign? I don't know.

And since the Towers reached free-fall speed, they were obviously brought down on purpose by demolition explosives. Everything has to be some kind of massive conspiracy with you people, and like 9/11 no amount of evidence to the contrary will sway you.

I am not sure I understand why you think the attack on the towers has anything to with somebody giving orders to not go to the aid of a couple of people in one of our consulates. You should see a doctor about it if you see conspiracies everywhere.

Wow, this thread really went off the rails, eh?

*sigh*

freefall aside, this is an unrelated matter, a mountain-sized mole hill, as it were...

Thanks for nothing, intransigents.

We don't have time for "no dialogue," man, seriously.

Please vote for President Obama: we need four more years to decide his place in history.

Romnay ain't ready.

Thank you.
