buntz: Let me ask you space geeks a question:

Would it possible to shoot something in the direction of the moon and actually hit it? Like, say, a baseball?

First, is there a cannon or something that would be powerful enough to break out of the Earth's atmosphere and if so, would it be possible to aim and land on the moon with an object from Earth?

Better yet, what would be the possibly of hitting Mars? Once it breaks the atmosphere, wouldn't inertia carry in a straight line to Mars?

Inertia does carry things in a straight line, without external forces. Gravity of several planets, the sun, etc. warps our perfectly flat putting green. Yeah I just made a golf-orbital mechanics analogy. Yes it's theoretically possible for a "ball goes in cup" solution to be "aim directly at the hole" but it's not usual.

If you mean more generally throw it in some calculated direction to hit Moon or Mars, absolutely yes. The practical problems arise when you try to accomplish that sort of speed in the atmosphere. It's best to do your throwing in the vacuum of space so your baseball doesn't disintegrate smashing into a dense fluid.

that was no to ponies. I can see how without the picture it could be misconstrued.

FlyingLizardOfDoom: FlyingLizardOfDoom: MusicMakeMyHeadPound: buntz: But if you did aim the proper way, would it be possible to shoot a baseball to Mars?

You do know that we currently have our second land rover on Mars, right?

Fourth.

Phoenix
Opportunity
Spirit
Curiousity

Not to poop on your correction but Phoenix isn't a rover. Now Sojourner on the other hand...
