If they'd been a bit more subtle, some of those right wingers might've bit on it.

Tremolo: IIRC, nimrod literally means "hunter," it was popularized as an insult by Bugs Bunny.

Nimrod was a guy's name in the bible; he was a "great hunter." He was one of Noah's grandsons (allegedly)

I've heard that about Bugs too. Apparently he sarcastically referred to Elmer Fudd as "quite the Nimrod" or something like that, mocking his hunting ability. I briefly tried to find it on the YouTubes, but I didn't find it within 30 seconds so I gave up.

Nimrod was a Biblical figure, said to be a great hunter.

Decades ago, there was a Bugs Bunny cartoon where he sarcastically called Elmer Fudd "Nimrod."

Most people didn't get the reference, and assumed Nimrod was an insult against one's intelligence that they had never heard of.

And the rest, they say, is history.

Such a wasted opportunity. If he wouldn't have made it so completely obviously fake, but left in a little hidden giveaway (like the sharpie that hadn't been invented yet, maybe) and played the rest straight, it might have gotten some play. As it went, it was just a total waste of effort.

Didn't this nimrod thing happen months ago, or am I just experiencing nonlinear recollection again?

The video was apparently meant to look really goofy, in order to make the prank funnier if people actually bought into it, but according to Arpaio's office, he didn't even see it.

You can see the prank video below, and just look at the size of that friggin' baby.

In 1994 there was a debate in California about what we should do about illegal immigration. There was a vote on whether we should allow illegal immigrants access to our hospitals.

Two guys saw a great opportunity for some lulz, so they ran an ad with a prank conservative solution. They wanted it to be way over the top really goofy. So one guy pretended his name was Daniel D. Portado, the leader of Hispanics Against Liberal TakeOver (HALTO). His proposed conservative solution - if people vote Republican and the Republican wins, all Hispanics (even citizens) will agree to self deport back to their country of origin. Other promises included things such as never utter a word of Spanish except for "adios, amigo" presumably for when they self-deport.

This over the top, comedic satirical proposal is now the official platform policy of the Republican candidate for President of the United States.

Laugh it up now, friends. In 20 years we might have the (R)'s running on a platform of all POTUS candidates must have their birth documented by video or some shiat.

This. It wasn't used as a term of disparagement until Buggs used it to goof on Elmer.

The picture from Wikipedia and the fact that every day on the calendar was Aug 4th was a bit much.
