Tremolo: IIRC, nimrod literally means "hunter," it was popularized as an insult by Bugs Bunny.

Nimrod was a guy's name in the bible; he was a "great hunter." He was one of Noah's grandsons (allegedly)

I've heard that about Bugs too. Apparently he sarcastically referred to Elmer Fudd as "quite the Nimrod" or something like that, mocking his hunting ability. I briefly tried to find it on the YouTubes, but I didn't find it within 30 seconds so I gave up.

It's probably the tone of voice he used when he said that. Instant putdown.

Nimrod was a bilical figure. It means "hunter." Bugs Bunny used it to insult Elmer Fudds hunting ability one time and people assume it just meant "stupid."

the misuse of "nimrod" has always been nails on a blackboard for me.

I heard somewhere that nimrod meant hunter and it came from Bugs Bunny. I'm not sure where I might have heard that though.

Yep. New here. Been reading Fark since boobies and wieners were on the main page. Finally got the nerve up to create an account and join in the fun. First order of business was to try my hand at trolling, which was not as easy as I thought it would be. I felt like it was a little, shall we say, obvious. Evidently not. I thought about throwing in some delicious caps lock, but felt that would have been a dead giveaway. The sad thing is that I could be charged with plagiarism for basically using arguments I hear from distant Facebook friends who come at me every day for my "liebrul" nonsense. Anyway, I'm glad to be here, and I appreciate the tips about my spelling. I look forward to many happy days here.

d23: (correct thread.. go!)

Old Story is Old...

This has been around about 10 days or so. This is shot on Super-8 film. The problem with that is that Super-8 was invented in 1965. Barry was "invented" in 1961.

Someone was even going onto the Wikipedia web page changing the super-8 invention date back to 1960 to make this seem more legitimate... or something.

huh. i wonder if that "Followup" tag is related to that startling observation of yours.

it is generally best to have some grasp of the subject before satirizing it.

why can't Obama be president if he was born in Kenya?

could McCain not be president since he was born in Panama?

Well, for future reference, if you're going for comedy trolling you should make it fun to play along. Like, I thought the intermittent typos were spelling out a message; you could try something like that. If you don't want to make it a single-serving game like that, try making flawed arguments and then making a counterargument in the next post that's ostensibly about something else. There's a lot of ways to do it, but Fark has a ton of trolls so you gotta bring your A game if you wanna be recognized.

Except that this was Donald Trump's very, very, very big news.

I refuse to believe that Trump figured out that the video was bogus. More likely Trump didn't get to see it time for his announcement.

I thought the trolling was obvious, due to the weird, counter-intuitive spelling errors. The content, however, was a great example of Poe's Law.

That just got you flagged as "nimrod."

2012-11-03 03:24:54 AM

PhiloeBedoe: He was a mighty hunter before the Lord: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the Lord.

Lionel Mandrake: Tremolo: IIRC, nimrod literally means "hunter," it was popularized as an insult by Bugs Bunny.

With the caveat that alt.usage.english says the ironic (vs. the Biblical) use of the term "nimrod" goes back to the 1930s, allow me to elucidate. For once, most of the Internets are wrong.

The earliest reference ("Precisely what I was wondering, my little Nimrod") that most of the web sites are talking about is from a Daffy Duck vs Elmer Fudd cartoon, at 5:30 into "What Makes Daffy Duck?" (1948), for which a Wikipedia page exists, except that the filter doesn't like URLs ending in "percent-sign-3F", so just cut-and-paste to this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/What_Makes_Daffy_Duck%3F or watch the toon itself at this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPQuh2ZbdtY#t=5m29s

The one I remember (and probably most people remember) is actually at 6:46 into a Bugs Bunny vs Yosemite Sam cartoon from 1951 ("Rabbit Every Monday") in which Bugs Bunny says "Meh, I couldn't do that to the little nimrod":

People who don't know the meaning of "Nimrod" use it this way because it just sounds like an insult, like "numbnuts" or "nitwit." Bugs calling Elmer a "Nimrod" is like saying, "Good thinking there, Tesla" to someone who has just stuck a fork into the toaster. The likelihood that a viewer would actually get a lot of the higher-culture references in those old cartoons was undoubtedly greater back then than it is today.

Little Known Facts About Barack Hussein Obama's Birth.

1. His head was so big he had to have two mothers.
2. He was what mid-wives call a "repeater". He kept returning to the womb to be born again, which is why he was born in several different places.
3. When he was two hours old he divorced his parents and adopted parents better suited to his political ambiions.
4. The doctor in attendance on his birth was K. Marx, with the assistance of Nurse Freida Engels.
5. He bit the head off a goat and drank its blood moments after being born.
6. He was really born at Mars Base 1313.
7. When he is feeling low he randomly shouts "I am tthe Lizard King!" to cheer himself up. This is because he is really the Lizard King.
8. He has been plotting since Kindergarten to restore the Queen of England to her rightful sovereignty over the American Colonies.
9. Where are his Kindergarten records? Why are there no hand print turkeys or macaroni Christmas trees?
10. He was born without fingerprints, hair, or a penis, and can not legally be President of the United Staes for this reason.
