Heh, looks like you get a longer sentence for pointing a gun at someone versus actually shooting them in NY (15 years for menacing and criminal possession?)
Not that those actions should be overlooked, but it seems like murderers get out in 5-7 years pretty routinely.

While this storm was one of the largest Cat 1 storms on record, and wide-spread looting and violence hasn't been a problem - it's interesting to think what would happen to the region if another New Madrid event were to happen and repair of utilities would be measured in months, not days.

I fully believe that the Federal government should be ready to help in a widespread disaster, but people and local communities need to be far better prepared for short and even medium-term disruptions of services. At the minimum, food and water for a week, ways to stay warm with prolonged outages.

The demand for fuel has sharply risen.
The supply of fuel has sharply declined.
The benevolent, all-knowing State has decreed that the supply of fuel shall be restricted, so as to benefit certain cronies and insiders.
The benevolent, all-knowing State has further decreed that the price of fuel shall not change, under penalty of incarceration.

Result: fuel is (forcibly) priced far below market.

What happens when goods are underpriced? Shortages.

Welcome to economic reality.

Yeah, because the solution is to just jack up the price and allow profiteering.

There are two types of people you should be allowed to shoot on site: profiteers and looters.

What has the temperature been in NY the past few days? And do they use the same ethanol blend that we do in northern climates?

The reason I ask is...gasoline isn't as combustible as it used to be. I doubt muzzle flash would set fire to a shooter soaked in fuel anymore unless the temperature was high enough to increase volatility.

Was actually running an experiment on this a few weekends ago. (semi-controlled conditions) Shooting a plastic bottle filled with gasoline with a .223 tracer round 6 inches from an ignition source (road flare) produced nothing. Moving the ignition source behind the target only produced a momentary flare up. Of course, results could have been different if it was warmer than 34 degrees.

/Some people golf. This is what I do.

queezyweezel: I was listening to the radio this morning, and they said that plenty of stations had gas, but no power to the pumps. Why the hell don't all gas stations have gas powered generators?

Yeah, they could use the gas they have to powered their gas-powered generators so they will have the electricity to sell the gas that they have, that is, had, before they went and used it to power the generators. It's the perfect plan.

What's even funnier is that the headline makes you think the article is about him when it is in fact an article about hurricane Sandy and after. Only 4 sentences even pertain to that guy.

Incorrect headline is incorrect.

The big east/midwest blackout of the early '00s was interesting. Only 24 hours in and I saw people fighting and threatening each other in line at the one gas station that had a generator and thus working pumps.

It's not the world's fault, or the government's, that you are completely unprepared for a power outage.

That and the gun laws in NYC are pretty hard. Even if he legally owned the pistol, he's screwed. If he didn't, he's just done. Retiring upstate for a decade.
