it seems the country music industry is doing to Taylor Swift what John Mayer and the Kennedy kid did

Which would be what, exactly?

Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert are fantastic and deserve those awards. Taylor Swift has won a ton of awards and probably will win a ton more in the future, so let's not get carried away.

She was nominated just because she remains enormously popular (trust me as the Dad of a 13 year old girl I know of what I speak). He latest album came out 10 days ago,now if she gets shut out next year then I will believe that the Country music elite are tired of her teen angst country-pop songs

Swift may be a good songwriter, but she is far from the best country vocalist or the best live show.

/also, i believe subby was going with 'The CMA's, John Mayer and the Kennedy kid all left her empty handed'. No rock. No stone. No medal. No award.

NuttierThanEver: now if she gets shut out next year then I will believe that the Country music elite are tired of her teen angst country-pop songs

If that is the case, they should just shut down the CMAs completely because country music is literally a neverending minefield of angst and sorrow. I'm not much of a fan of country, but I do listen to it on occasion and I'll be the first to tell you that adult angst country-pop songs aren't any more tolerable than their teen counterparts.

Is she even really country anymore? I mean, you are going to tell me "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" is a country song? In that case, I am incensed that Katy Perry didn't even get nominated for any CMAs!

Although, it did give us the very good Breaking Bad parody of the song/video... Link

Hahaha, I get it subby, you're trying to say that the ACM farked her. The only problem with that is it implies that she should have won but got cheated, when in fact that vacuous twit got exactly what she deserved. She has absolutely no talent or skill as a vocalist or a performer or a songwriter, but she has this cute "girl next door" look to her so she gets to make millions of dollars. Personally I see her popularity among younger people as a sign that the younger generation has severely low standards.

The CMAs writhed all over her for a half hour, failed to become erect and then moped around the house all evening before muttering something about having to get up early, kissing her lightly on the cheek, avoiding eye contact and driving home without even turning on the radio so it could hear the sound of failure rushing by in the night air?

2012-11-02 01:56:46 PM

Country music nowadays is just regurgitated pop music with a steel guitar-twang and an incredibly transparently fake "just plain folks" vibe.

Whenever I hear some guy (or gal) with a net-worth in the tens of millions singing about the trials and tribulations of "living in a double-wide", part of my soul dies.

Snoop Dogg got nominated. And Lionel Richie. And the Civil Wars. Taylor wasn't even the least-country person there last night. Country can't hang on to banjos and twang forever. That's just how music is going these days. Genres have gotten tossed in a blender and set to 'frappe'. Country is no different. People sing what they like, and as a result, the most popular country singer in the world drops dubstep on everyone and calls it one of her favorite tracks on the album.

In 2008, her albums sold a combined four million copies, making her the best-selling musician of the year in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Forbes ranked Swift 2009's 69th-most powerful celebrity with earnings of $18 million and 2010's 12th-most powerful celebrity with earnings of $45 million. Swift was ranked the 38th Best Artist of the 2000-10 decade by Billboard. In January 2010 Nielsen SoundScan listed Swift as the most commercially successful country (or country/pop crossover) artist in music history with over 33 million digital tracks sold. As of February 2011 she has sold over 19 million albums and 33 million singles worldwide.

You make a compelling point. (I laughed.)

A lot of folks in this thread seem to be missing another point, to wit, that they are nowhere to be found in Swift's target demographic, unless there are 'tweens and women under 18 with disposable income and iPods' among us Farkers.

As far back as I can remember there have been pop stars targeting the teeny bopper bubble gum market; I even remember resenting those pop stars in a petulant way when I was younger. I'm pretty sure that David Cassidy didn't give a rip about my opinion of him or his music and I'm pretty sure Taylor Swift doesn't either.

I believe the main reason Taylor Swift articles get posted on Fark is to give the community an opportunity to post pictures of her and make salacious comments, and I am totally OK with that. I do find comments that criticize her music a little tiresome as they typically are a display of misplaced outrage. It's like railing against romance novels.

JOHNNY CASH IS REAL COUNTRY - how many songs did he actually write? A life of drug addiction does not somehow make you "real country"

If Talyor Swift came up to me and proved that in order to save the lives of 16 orphan toddlers I would have to defeat her in hand to hand combat of her choosing, I would reluctantly punch her in the face repeatedly until she was utterly defeated, praying that she wouldn't suffer a debilitating head injury resulting in blindness or memory loss.

Then I would feel bad, yet relieved. Also timidly hopeful that none of the spared toddlers would become the next Hitler.

No CMA award? That's as it should be. Swift is not exactly going to be mistaken for Loretta Lynn or Crystal Gayle. If she's won anything in the past, that's worth getting upset about, maybe.

Country music in the sense of the CMAs or the radio is a marketing term referring loosely to the target audience of the product. It doesn't actually have anything to do with the content or the composition of the music itself. Same as Rock or Urban, for instance. Or Pop. It's entirely possible for a given song to work in two or more such categories at once, it's not like, say, Blues, where a song is or isn't Blues based on whether it uses the 0/5/7 chord progression and its subcategory is based on quantitative factors like whether a steel guitar or acoustic is used, etc.

//And, yes, a song with a specific musical category (blues, bluegrass, rap, electro, etc) can often also belong to one or more marketing categories (country, rock, pop). I'm also not down on the industry for preferring the latter, I would kind of question any industry that wasn't more focused on who is buying the product than the details of its design.

Meant to add:

If country radio actually played any of the above songs (or, hell, artists) more than once every 8 months (if at all) I'd listen to it. But it doesn't*, so I won't.

I've a few people around me who DO choose to listen to it full time and tell me these things. All I hear on the extremely rare occasions when I'm exposed to it is mediocre-at-best pop music with an occasional all-but-subliminal hint of steel guitar and/or fiddle and/or mandolin used for "flavoring".

"Fark in the Butt"
"I am the man who made Linda Lovelace gag."
"He has to pay for what I get for Free"
"Don't bite the Dick that Feeds you"
"Masturbation Blues"
"Cum Stains on the Pillow"(about a boy and his dog)
"Itty Bitty Titties"

And a ton of others.

/loves me some david allen coe.

You left out all his White Power Ballads.

Fortunately he doesn't do those anymore. They do however still his X rated stuff at his shows. I saw him in concert last year and they basically had to wheel him on stage. He put on a good show, though it only lasted an hour.

Since EVERY radio station is now on the internet, I highly recommend WNKU, public radio based in Northern Kentucky University. They don't play classic country, but they do play new Americana, and I have heard more good new music there than anywhere else lately.

And Townes Van Zandt wrote Waitin' Round To Die when he was 15. FIFTEEN.

I'm more of a Joe Ely-BR549-Webb Wilder-Jayhawks-Trent Summar-John Hiatt-Southern Culture On The Skids kinda country listener myself. Awards shows are nothing more than a circle jerk of "industry" wankers congratulating each other for peddling millions of "units" of watered-down fake tripe that glorifies stupidity to people who don't know better.

This is country

This is country

This is country

This is country

And even this... is more country that most of garbage you hear on the radio. Not to mention, just better in general.

A lot of the mass market "country" these days glorifies being an idiot, which I'm not a fan of. And Taylor Swift is as "country" like Britney Spears.

Also, I want to punch anyone who raps in a country song, right square in the yambag.

It is at least a positive thing Miranda Lambert won something rather than another pop tart. At least she has a measure of actual talent.

We did. Sad day; awesome night.

I agree with the "good music" sentiment. Even if something's not my style, if the talent is there you have to respect it. It's wading through the oceans of crap to find the good stuff that's difficult.

My playlist includes prog, classic rock, show tunes, blues, jazz, classical and Wagnerian opera so I'm open to a lot of stuff. I've performed both instrumentally and vocally during college, mostly church stuff.

Living only 5 miles from Country Concert Central has led me to the conclusion that listening to country music actually makes you lose IQ points. Those folks just ain't bright.

One of these days we need to do a Fark party in Dayton. You and I need to split a pitcher or two.

I remember a review of the Ramones that went something like this: "It's your fourth album. At some point you need to learn how to play your instruments." Same deal with Taylor Swift. After enough he-done-me-wrong songs, you become a self-parody. You were brave enough to change your hair and make-up. Now grow up.

/Not that it matters. She can't sing. Miranda Lambert got fat, old-looking and preachy. I like to look at Kelli Pickler and Julianne Hough, but I expect their music is awful.

I had long individual responses typed up and then my computer hiccuped and ate 'em so I'm just going to give a blanket thanks to the lion's share of the posters on page 4 for the new (and new-to-me) leads on both worthy practitioners of modern Americana/Alt. Country (or: what (IMO) is the only music being produced these days that's at all fit to be called "country.") and the means by which to be introduced to more of them.

Your efforts couldn't be more appreciated.

Pandora's Litterbox: Smeggy Smurf: browntimmy: I'm thinking the number of country songs in existence that could be described as "epic" or "masterpiece" is somewhere in the neighborhood of 0-2.

He Stopped Loving Her Today - George Jones
Before the Next Teardrop Falls - Freddy Fender
The Gambler - Kenny Rogers
Good Hearted Woman - Waylon Jennings

and most important of all:
This Cowboy's Hat - Chris Ledoux

124 "Orange Blossom Special" - Johnny Cash
123 "Take This Job and Shove It" - Johnny Paycheck
122 "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye" - Eddy Arnold
121 "18 Wheels and a Dozen Roses" - Kathy Mattea
120 "Rose Garden (aka I Never Promised You A Rose Garden)" - Lynn Anderson

118 "Why Don't Ya Love Me" - Hank Williams, Sr.
117 "Country Bumpkin" - Cal Smith
116 "He Thinks He'll Keep Her" - Mary Chapin Carpenter

114 "Amarillo By Morning" - George Strait
113 "North To Alaska" - Johnny Horton
112 "Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind" - George Strait
111 "I'm Not Lisa" - Jessi Colter
110 "If You've Got The Money, I've Got The Time" - Lefty Frizzell
109 "The Gambler" - Kenny Rogers
108 "Silver Medals, and Sweet Memories" - Statler Brothers
107 "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way?" - Waylon Jennings
106 "Lookin' At The World Through a Windshield" - Del Reeves
105 "A Thousand Miles From Nowhere" - Dwight Yoakam
104 "Walkin' After Midnight" - Patsy Cline
103 "Long Gone Lonesome Blues" - Hank Williams, Sr.
102 "Tennessee River" - Alabama
101 "Giddyup Go" - Red Sovine
100 "Wildwood Flower" - The Carter Family
99 "D-I-V-O-R-C-E" - Tammy Wynette
98 "Cool Water" - Bob Nolan & The Sons Of The Pioneers
97 "What a Difference You've Made In My Life" - Ronnie Milsap
96 "Is Anybody Goin' To San Antone" - Charley Pride
95 "Sweet Dreams" - Patsy Cline
...

I've decided to add some to your list.

I Am A Man Of Constant Sorrow - Stanley Brothers
Friends In Low Places - Garth Brooks
Panco and Lefty - Willy Nelson and Merle Haggard
Should've Been A Cowboy - Toby Keith
Long Black Train - Josh Turner
Highwaymen - The Highwayman

It's really too bad that every other country song that comes on the radio nowadays is about drinking, women, pickup trucks, or some combination of the 3.

People like you are the reason the words "liberal tolerance" is becoming an oxymoron. Your kind are the most close-minded, petty, immature people there are. You only tolerate those who have the same exact views as yourself and loudly insult those who don't.

I'm conservative and the love of my life is practically a communist. We strongly disagree on a lot of issues but in the end what matters is how we love each other.

Hey now, there's tolerance, then there's "used to date Ryan Seacrest" tolerance. Somethings just can't be overlooked.

I like that one too, but I thought people might know that as 'the theme to Justified'. Because I just assume nothing is obscure on fark.

I'm compelled to post few more songs without rap on them....some of which I can't post from youtube because they have no youtube. But I'm sure that's still not too obscure for fark, right? RIGHT. Okay.

Oriole Post - New London

Psycoholic_Slag: Tom_Slick: Psycoholic_Slag: Back in the day you had do prison time (or at least pretend you did) and be a Level 5 alcoholic with 4 ex wives before you were "country".

At least that is what all the songs led me to believe.

/my lawn, it has a pickup and old dog on it.

Obvious country song for that comment

I was thinking more David Allen Coe:

"WELL, I WAS DRUNK THE DAY MY MOM GOT OUT OF PRISON
AND I WENT TO PICK HER UP IN THE RAIN
BUT BEFORE I COULD GET TO THE STATION IN MY PICKUP TRUCK
SHE GOT RUNNED OVER BY A DAMNED OLD TRAIN"

What has 100 legs and 600 teeth??..........The front row at a David Allen Coe concert.

Eternal Virgin: I don't know anything about Country music because I'm just a humble beaner, but...

This is Julie Ho or whatever, I'm sure I got her name wrong but if I was deaf I would totally love Country.

This debate goes on and on...at least back to the late 30's there were 2 classifications of the genre..Western and Hillbilly. When it eventually merged into country&western, there was unhappy people on both sides...In the late 50's when the electric bass and pedal steel guitar replaced the upright acoustic bass and lap steel..same uproar..In the 60's Buck Owens' "Bakersfield Sound" was considered too rock and roll..The 70's Willie and Waylons' outlaw country..same thing....
I am a die hard traditionalist wth a small band..We dont do "crying in your beer country'..we do slit your wrist country...But you cant help the new kids, coming along wanting it bigger, better, flashier and louder..
Garth Brooks did for country like Chris Moneymaker did for poker....

red5ish: doctor wu: I don't know, can't go through the check-out aisle without seeing her on at least two magazine covers and she's on the goddamned radio every freakin' hour! The only time I hear Beiber is when I drive my neices somewhere.

#1 Pop song on the Billboard Hot 100 is One More Night by the band Maroon 5 off their new CD "Overexposed"
#2 Pop song on the Billboard Hot 100 is We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together - Taylor Swift - Red
#3 ditto ditto is As Long As You Love Me by Justin Bieber

I think you are right. I just thought that picture was perfect. Taylor Swift is a huge property right now.

Yeah, it would be interesting to know what she makes from magazine covers alone, wow!! She gotta be in Jennifer Anniston territory by now.
