they literally cant. they have to cut big holes in the ship to get the nuclear reactors out... it would have to be rebuilt after that.

I had a friend (who was a Grape) that served on the Enterprise when they filmed Top Gun...said they had sooo many wimpy takes with Cruise throwing Goose's dog-tags out to sea the director finally got fed up and said, "Throw'em like a man, Tom". A good chunk of the crew was standing around when this happened at his little self stormed off the set.
