So I take it that a Daily Fail article summarizing a reddit flameware is just here to provide tinder for Fark's semi-regular tipping flame war thread?

Yep. Let's get it started.

If she can't afford to tip she can't afford to eat out.

If you can't afford to live on your wages without getting tips, you need to find a better job.

You do realize that jobs that allow tips are not required to pay minimum wage, right?

In some states that's true, but not all. In Oregon all waitstaff must be paid the at least the state's minimum wage of $8.80 hour. All tips they receive are in addition to that. IIRC, both Washington and California have similar wage laws for tipped employees as well.

If she can afford a $138 meal, she can cough up a tip. That's a lot of Big Macs.

My daughter is a waitress at a rib place here in Texas. She makes about $100 every 2 weeks, plus tips. She pays her bills with tips.

Yeah.
I could feed my entire family for a week on $138.

When she's at HER job grinding middle-aged businessman dong while dressed as Sailor Moon I'm fairly certain tipping is mandatory even if he's already purchased a $300 bottle of Korbel.

There are plenty of places you can go that don't require you to leave a tip, you cheap-ass.

Bingo.

As a chef, can I just say: tip your damn staff, or go somewhere else. If they give you terrible service, then don't, but rolling into a joint, and just trying to play the "I can't afford it card" means you need to find other options. You wasted the server's time, and ours as well.

I live in a country where servers make at least minimum wage. Back when I was working for minimum wage, it was weird for me to consider tipping someone who might actually be earning more than me.

I tip now that I make more than double minimum wage.

For a lot of restaurants nowadays, you can call ahead and order some food to go. This solves all your basic problems; you don't have to tip, waste the server's time, or endure the stigma of being an ungracious wretch.

Exactly. Don't like it, you can quit. Or learn to farking type, or something. It's not the customer's fault you get such crappy wages.

$300 for a bottle Korbel? Who in farking hell pays that kind of price? Yeah, I understand "bottle service" and the insane markups*, but shiat at least get a bottle of decent vodka for that price. (I favor Grey Goose; your mileage may vary considerably.)

She could afford a $138.00 meal, but not the tip? Bullshiat fail. If you don't want to tip, don't tip. But don't write some bullshiat line about how you're a single mom after racking up $138.00.

It's actually pretty annoying on my lunch break. I just want to grab my food and sit down. But when you order ahead and then ask to sit down to eat they make it all akward for you and still come by with their fake "Are you OK over here?" (Yes you dumb coont, I ordered everthing I needed at once like anyone with an iq of 5 could do). Then they don't have anywhere to throw the trash and when you ask they make a big charade of how "they are helping you out".

Im really sick of eating at subway every day when there are 10-20 sit down restaurants all controlled by the waitress mafia.

They have tip jars at the register... I think basically they're implying if you don't give them a tip they'll do nasty things to your food the next time you come in to pick it up.

I've always heard that, at such jobs, the employer is required to pay out the balance if an employee's tips don't equal at least minimum wage.

Honest Bender: I've always heard that, at such jobs, the employer is required to pay out the balance if an employee's tips don't equal at least minimum wage.

Yes, but I've never heard of an employer complying because it's almost impossible to prove. The server could have pocketed tons of unclaimed cash and, even if she had only one table all week, the employer will pull the "I know they tipped you $300 but you just aren't reporting it" bullshiat and the server will see no additional money.

2012-11-02 07:54:11 AM
I always tip, but it is still service based. Suck as a waiter/waitress? I'll leave you about 10%. If you're good though, I usually leave closer to 50%. I know it's a shiatty job, but sometimes it's the only thing available.

I'd be more likely to believe the following scenario.

1. Have dinner at nice restaurant
2. Meal is totally farked up by poor service
3. Customer stiffs in response to said poor service
4. Entitled waitress writes "single mom" on her copy of the receipt
5. ...and calls the newspaper
