People think the Jarheads are stupid, but I'll tell you- it takes a good deal of smarts to be a medic or a chaplain.

As a veteran myself, I'm going to have to guess that 1. Alcohol was (majorly) involved and 2. The Marine was of the junior paygrades.

Let's see how my predictions play out...

It's good that the wheelchair guy would rather see the marine do community service than go to jail.

2012-11-02 11:06:15 AM
That is not something a Marine does - they have more self-control," Priotti said.

This guy has apparently known much higher quality Marines than I have met.

FTFA: The guy to whom Priotti referred is Christopher Dabney, who police say took offense at what Priotti was wearing - a uniform while in a wheelchair - and attacked Priotti in the restaurant at about 2:20 a.m.

Dabney, 22
, of 111 NW 16th St., Apt. A3, was charged with abuse of the disabled, according to an arrest report.

I stand by my assertions. If he's 22 and already out, he was pretty junior when he left the service.

A true American hero.

The guy was dressed for halloween as a wounded soldier in a wheelchair with fake blood all over his face.
I'm glad the marine clocked him, even if he was once in the army.

it's like a cop wearing his own uniform on halloween with bullet holes in his chest and head. that's just stupid, and very disrespectful.

Yeah disrespectful but by all means he has the right as a US citizen to wear this costume and not get assaulted by people that have sworn to protect him and this country.

Just as I have the right to think you are an asshat.

Man, I'm with you here. I do find that to be distasteful. Even for a bona fide disabled veteran.

Camaraderie among armed services and all, I've always gotten a kick out of the Marines mentality. My cousin is the same way, a Marine with a rifle is the most dangerous thing on the planet, Marines are tough as nails and all of that. He's a goddamn wrench turner who has no chance of deployment.

I like to remind him that him that his "pussy Army guy" cousin who has 10 years service over him and multiple ranks would be kicking doors in while he's safe on the tarmac.

super_grass: "Hero: Marine attacks a man for dressing up as a paralyzed vet on Halloween"

Umm that does not a hero make.
Now if the marine first verifies that the person is not disabled, and that the costume is out of disrespect for the military, then maybe. But unless those are met it is just an idiot who deserves to be brutaly beaten daily until he understands that violence is not always the right answer.

Marine "Chaplin" s is not normally possible. The United States Navy Chaplain Corps normally provides chaplins for the marines.

Honestly these guys were both veterans, not retired, and the guy in the wheelchair, while legitimately disabled, was in such a state because of an injury unrelated to his military service.

Effectively, this story should be "drunk idiot assaults man without warning out of misguided sense of patriotism." Their veteran status is about as significant to the story as mine is.

fluffy2097: I'm going to bet $100 that alcohol was involved.

2:20am at the "Pita Pit?" I can't imagine anyone there was close to sober!

Priotti told The Sun he served in the Army from 1996-98 and was paralyzed in an accident about 10 years ago that was not military-related.

Okay fellow vets, show of hands, who thinks the uniform is an apropiate holloween costume?

Also, Priotti served a whole two years in the Army, and apparently was not in the Army when paralyzed.
From the moment a person is sworn in, they will be a veteran when they leave the service. Doesn't matter how long or what they did in the service. Thirty days of thirty years.
Maybe some Army people can tell me about two year soldiers. In the Navy they are usaualy unfit for service.
