(NY1)   NYC Marathon organizers asking local hotels to displace hurricane evacuees with out of town runners. Hotel owner in story is hero; asinine tag for hotels that are actually doing this, and for Bloomberg allowing a marathon right now   (statenisland.ny1.com ) divider line

While running this race is stupid, misleading headline is misleading. The head of the race agreed with the hotel owner that storm victims shouldn't be displaced.

I don't have a problem with the race. It'll bring revenue to the city, and for those New Yorkers running it, it'll probably give them (and their friends and families) a distraction from the aftermath of the hurricane.

I would have a problem if hotels were displacing evacuees for the runners, though.

The cops in New York have more important things to do right now than chaperone these spandex-clad assholes.

It's an incredibly stupid thing to so at this point in time. With the advent of instant communication, it can be rescheduled to accommodate most people. Screw the revenue. Right now, they need to focus on getting everything back to normal.

Watching thousands of people wreck their knees just so they can say they accomplished something takes a third seat to the residents riding shotgun.

Bloomberg should stick to his real job which is banning guns in South Dakota and making sure folks in the projects eat their veggies and don't drink pop..

Wow, WTF is subby talking about?

"He has several conference rooms that he'd set up cots in if he could get some."
Why do you need a cot? Sleep on the floor.

Something like this. Goddamn people, have some priorities.

So, people who are currently in NY, but do not live there, who had a reservation, and most likely no ability to get a flight out, are douches for demanding that they get their room? At this point aren't they all refugees, except some of the refugees have reservations?

Admitting that the marathon should be postponed is to admit defeat. And no runner wants to admit to the agony of defeat.

The Steelers can't get a room either. Maybe they should all crash at Eli's house.

Aw, c'mon! Think of how fun it could be! The first leg is through roads that have yet to be cleared of debris, followed by 2 miles of eight-inch deep water that has yet to drain away (watch out for pot holes!)....

It could be a blast.

Ah, New York.

In the face of adversity, you never cease to showcase both the heights of compassion and the human spirit, and the depths of depravity at the same time.

Truly, you are the Summers Eve of Douches, Bloomberg.

Airports are open and operational....would be a good chance for airlines to get GOOD PR for once and offer these people a flight home.

Ask people to share their room! If I was displaced or a marathon runner I would be willing to share a room.

Nobody has banned the ubiquitous red cup (URC), just the drinkie-poos that go in it.

Anyway, didn't they run after 9/11? I live here and don't even care enough to remember if they did or not.

THIS

NY has other things to worry about right now. I understand about hotel reservations, etc, but unfortunately Sandy stopped by and changed things. Postpone the damn thing. So a few runners cry. Whatever.

There are people on Facebook naming and shaming hotels that are kicking out their displaced relatives for runners' reservations:

Facebook: Cancel the NYC Marathon

This is so wrong on so many levels.

Just a thought here...if you're going to have it, why not turn it into a charity event?

They should turn it into a triathalon by making part of the route through the flooded tunnels.

So you're saying people were in New York before Sandy hit, but aren't checking into their hotels until now? They aren't displacing people who have already checked in. They've just stopped honoring current reservations.

If I had a room reserved and was coming in for the weekend, I think I would call ahead, so bad on the runners if they didn't. But the hotel should have called and given them a heads-up too, so if they didn't, I guess both of them farker up.

Boy, that sounds like fun. I'm all miserable and irritated because I lost my home, now I have to listen to some douche tell me I should really try running and get more exercise every five minutes. If they aren't doing that they'll be going on and on about how awesome they are and how running changed their life...etc.

It'd be a farking nightmare.

...and the food we waste could feed villages in Africa.

shiat happens. Some parts of the world (or just the US, if you're that selfish) have, some have not. Don't start biatching about that unless you want to elect a Handicapper General. Because that's where that road leads. No one can have fun while another is sad. No one can have luxuries while another is poor. No one can be any better off than anyone else.
