And, Cory Booker just became a 2016 front runner.

2012-11-02 03:01:10 AM
Cory Booker is simply amazing. Besides this, here are some of his other exploits:

Shoveled an elderly man's driveway.
Rescued neighbor from burning house.

God dammit. I love that guy. Makes me want to move to NJ just to vote for him. And makes me proud to share a first name with him.

Wow, there's no way inviting the population of New Jersey to your house for free electricity and entertainment could backfire.

Newark mayor, unassuming everyman by day.

Heroic Corey Booker by night!

Is that hot sauce and tarter sauce?

Wow, and I thought I put hot sauce on everything.

Anyone able to confirm if that is any good?

/Booker seems like a cool customer

Just think of the turmoil and catastrophic repercussions had the person he invited over not been able to charge their electronic devices for another few days!

Now the expectation exists that the government should save everyone from their own slothfulness and stupidity.

The Hero tag is currently enjoying dinner at Cory Booker's....

i call bullshiat, in 2004 with the 2 hurricanes that ended up in my neck of the woods. i was without power for almost 6 days. my neighbors 2 blocks up had power as did a few businesses.

do people not realize how power is transfered? the power companies can't work on the sub station you are attached to when it is how ever many feet deep under water!

GOT DAMN, I LIVE IN NY, I CANT LIVE 4 DAYS WITHOUT POWER!!!!!

There are only a couple of American politicians I would actually go see if they were to have a speaking engagement anywhere within a 300 miles of me (a surprising number actually have).

Cory Booker is one of them.

I don't bother going to speaking engagements or rallies. Annoying and too goddamn many people.

But if I ever have the chance, I'm gonna buy him a beer or six.

Inviting neighbors over to charge their phones and have dinner is the modern Fiorello LaGuardia's reading of the comics over the radio.

2012-11-02 04:06:22 AM
Can't hate on that. While it isn't a big thing, the little things add up. You make life better for a few of your neighbours, that is a great thing.

Also, this is a reason to get a backup generator (that's probably why he had power).

Man, of course it's Cory Booker. I haven't heard a word out of his mouth or seen him undertake an action that didn't make me wish I knew him. Add this one to the impressive list.

Who has power is an arbitrary and capricious thing.

We had a massive snowstorm last year. Lost power for eight days on my street.

All five of us.

Rest of the neighborhood had power back in three days.

He's only 43. Let him take Christie's job, first. There's lots of other good Dems available for 2016. Warren, perhaps.

Yeah, I've been through hurricanes over the years where my house and 3 or 4 others had power while everyone else for blocks didn't, and I've experienced the reverse. You never know how things are going to shake out.

Booker seems like a terrific guy, and the substance of what he said in that video was refreshingly positive. He'd have my vote if ever I had the chance to give it to him. HOWEVER, he and Mahr are having two different conversations. If Booker thinks he, or anyone else, has a snowball's chance in hell of getting the kind of cooperation he's able to achieve in Newark going on the national level without steering this country in the wrong direction, he's too naive for the big chair. There's an enormous difference between the people he deals with every day, and the people who have power in DC.

Mahr is frequently a whiny blowhard, but he's correct in this case. Republican ideas have, and are, farking this country over right now. We need to swing in a more progressive direction for a while in order to fix things. Cooperation would be nice, but capitulation needs to stop. It's time to force the GOP to change their tune, not give credence to their bullshiat and try to be a big happy family. The House majority has earned a spanking these last few years, not a hug.

I'd vote for him in a heartbeat for president. He'd be a much better choice than the crap vs crap choice we have this year. :( Such a terrible choice this year, I ended up voting independent even with no chance of an independent winning :(

This.

Lots of mayors are good at what they do and connect with individual citizens, but Booker gets the press because he's displaying basic competence in a city that had been a corrupt cesspit for fifty-sixty years. Newark had decades of Sharpe James and before that decades of mobbed-up crooks running the city. Imagine a Detroit with the Mafia in the role of the auto industry: that was Newark.

At the federal level, they're still in a bubble with no sense of having hit bottom the way Newark did. So yeah, a reformer like Cory Booker has no shot.

Obama and Christie had a political reason for their lovefest the other day: it helps Christie for 2013 if Booker challenges him for governor, and it reminded Booker that the bossman's DC goons NEVER forget if you say something to make their guy look bad.
