flexflint: babtras: Interesting that a message found in 1982 becomes big news only two weeks after the nearby GCHQ announces a "recruiting scheme".

At least that would imply that the code is breakable and not OTP.

Found in 1982? Where did you see that?

There's a few sites out there that didn't copy/paste the story and actually looked into the history of it.

Have at it, Fark.

Enigma simulator. Though it was the German's machine others used it as well. A British spy could have used it to send messages to Britain.

/Kinda useless without the rotor and wire settings though.
//If anyone wants to try all the possibilities....

I doubt it's the Enigma code, it was used by a Brit, but lets see what my Enigma program spits out

50% analyzed with CrypTool. 2 errors so far. I am still in doubt that it's the Enigma, we will see.

Not Enigma, and not viginiere

Playfair would be my first guess.

I'll run it through that one

A loaf of bread, a container of milk, and a stick of butter.

Eggs, sugar, and flour where not part of the skit.

I thought it was:

A GIN AND ORANGE! A LEMON SQUASH! AND A SCOTCH AND WATER, PLEASE!

gadian: Is that the one where the letters were transcribed to numbers (like A=1) and then those numbers were matched to keys that were created randomly? Like, A = 1, but in this particular key 1 could be for the letter J or in the next key the number 1 could be for the letter Z.
If that's the case, it just requires a bit of jiggery-pokery and a nerd with a computer program could do it quickly.

One-time pads do work like that, but because the encoding pad is truly random, never reused and never repeats, it's the only provably unbreakable way of encrypting something.
Fortunately, British agents didn't use them until late in the war, so it may be breakable.

JesseL: It looks to me like it was based on a one time pad. Good luck decoding that.

The message still may have gotten delivered, as it indicates 'Number of copies sent 2'.

Probably says something like "Finally talked Hess into flying self to England. What a sucker!"
