StranahansBarracuda: OlderGuy: StranahansBarracuda: OlderGuy: Greetings All.. Long week at work.. got lots done ! Spent last weekend doing generator startups and maintainance.. the LP/ Natural gas ones are easy.. the gasoline ones, not so much.. have tried to get people to turn off the gas tank and run the generator until it quits.. keeps the carburetor from gunking up and makes it very easy to start when needed.. a lot of people 'forget'.. they remember when I give them the bill.. rather than explain all over again, I tell them to look at the last bill and think about it..

Thank you for the tip!!

Ideally, you should be able to turn on the tank valve, turn the ignition switch on, set the choke to on, pull the rope once, and it should start. If not, set the choke to off and pull the rope again and it will start.. all of 'my' generators work that way... normally, it,s a 'guy' thing with generators.. I want the 'gals' to be able to start them also.. I do the necessary tweaks on ignition and carburetors to achieve the easiest starting...

I am not strong enough to start my gennie with the pull cord so I made sure to get one with a key start. This storm was its first outing. After 12 days with no power last year I wasn't taking any chances! So my snowbird, Dad, picked up a big one in FL last year for a song (display model at Sam's Club) and brought it back with him this past spring. I turn on the fuel valve, pull out the choke, and turn the key. Per the instructions I wait 30 seconds and then push the choke back in. I ran the fridge, TV, laptop, and a lamp with power to spare. I wasn't sure what to do when the power came back on so I just turned it off (tank is almost empty.) So now should I start it up, then turn off the fuel valve and let it run until it stops?

Yes, at minimum you should turn off the valve and run it until it stops. Since generators are seldom used, and when you need them you REALLY need them the best thing to do is follow the storage instructions in the manual to the letter. I drain ALL of the gasoline out of mine and make sure the tank is clean. Then I take out the spark plug, squirt a little oil into the cylinder, give the rope a pull and it's ready to store. Some engines also have a set screw under the float bowl on the carburetor so you can drain the spoonful or so of gas that's left after you run it dry. If you don't know what that is or there isn't a drain don't worry about it. It's just an extra measure I like to follow.

It's also a good idea to run for at least an hour or so once or twice a year.

Hoover isn't quite so thrilled to be wearing the hat. But he looks so cute in it.

I have to wait on the other cats to be asleep before I attempt the hat.

MoronLessOff: Brian Blessed's Bastard Boy: She pulls them out of the cage once or twice a week and they move around some, but really aren't that mobile most of the time.

I've heard they're quite content to ride around on your shoulder. Although, I'm be a bit concerned that MoronCat or MoronDog might try to eat them.

/also considering a songbird.

The daughter puts them on her chest and they sink in with their claws and hold on. As for the cats and other animals we have in the house, they pretty much leave them alone. They were out with the ferrets a few times, and aside from some sniffs, they had nothing to do with them. The cats pretty much did the same thing. As for the dog, she's the only one who hasn't been introduced yet. She's a Giant Schnauzer and I really don't think she'd do anything to it because she's such a coward, but I really don't want to take the chance. But when they are out, they mostly just stand still and look around. They only really move when they are in their cage.

Scampi doing what she does best, stealing food. Little girl just goes nuts whenever food is anywhere near here and you have to fight her off to save what's on your plate. Wife decided she could have what was left over from her lunch of grits and eggs. Any cleanup later will be done by her or the kids.

Awesome! I would follow the manual, however the reason Dad got it so cheap ($350) was it was missing the key, the feet, and the owners manual. It took 8 phone calls to get a key and feet, but I think Dad got a link to the owners manual online. I just don't have the link. It's a Black Max with a Honda engine.

Thanks for the kind words - the couch and loveseat are my first foray into reupholstering. Am now doing 10 cushions for my sister's outdoor furniture...great fun - NOT!!!

Necessity - was told it would be $800 labor to redo both pieces - I can go to Rooms To Go and replace them for that. Figured 'what's the worse that can happen' and dug in. I've sewn since I was 15, so a little experience helps! Don't have the patience to do professionally :-/

All Hallows Eve

On All Hallows Eve,
We go bump in the night.
Eager to give you a fright!

Wind blows to power my broom
Glide easily in the gloom.

At my back a feline looms,
Seer of  doom.

Fair of fur,
Diens to purr.

Feels the wind upon it's back,
Feels not the lack,

Of ordinary nights.

Above the planet we do ride,
All the rules this night abide.

Wicked winds, take in our stride!
We ride, ever mindful of our pride.

Spirits glide in or wake,
Thirst this night to slake.

Mortality no longer stake
Eternity their own to make.

As we will, so shall it be,
Remembering the rule of Three.
Blessed Be.

I did manage to go to a pretty unique restaurant for a friend's Young Day before this all hit.
It's a restaurant where the servers are all legally blind and you are taken into the place and seated and served and you eat - everything in complete darkness.
I have to say I quite enjoyed the experience and it was a lot of fun actually too trying to figure out where everything was ect.
I have to give a big kudos to our waitress though - she did amazing for the place being packed and rememering everyones names, where the tables were, where everyone was seated and who ordered what - simply amazing and some of the best service I've gotten at a restaurant.

I would suggest that.. it will ensure that you don't have a clogged carburetor to deal with at an inopportune time.. also, most of my folks, come spring, will siphon the leftover gas into the lawnmower, and fill the generator with new gas when needed. The fridge and lamps are ok directly off of the generator.. electronics are very easy to damage from voltage spikes and surges.. I recommend getting a UPS ( uninterruptible power supply) also known as a computer backup and plug the tv and electronics into that.. it stabilizes the voltage to those appliances... most insurance companies won't cover damage to electronics due to generator use.... a laptop is not an issue, as the power supply is a transformer , which lessens the effects of voltage changes.. also you are running on the battery.. the power supply just charges the battery, which will act as a buffer to voltage issues...
