SnyderCat: Enemabag Jones: colorado_zombie,
Sounds a lot like my kitteh that had hypothyroidism. He LOVED eating the other kitteh's puke. Plus he would scarf down his food and the other kitteh's food and beg for more. Anything that hit the floor he considered food. I once watched him eat a big chunk of red pepper and a walnut. He hit 26 pounds before he turned 2. You might want to get him tested.

Part of me want to start pulling out the cayanne pepper and doing all sorts of truly unethical experiments with that food-driven behavior.

/I am sure hypothyroidism is a horrible, horrible thing.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis *sigh*

And I will take hypothyroid over hyperthyroid any day of the week and twice on Friday.

Oh blargh, I have just been diagnosed with that. Going for a thyroid ultrasound on Tuesday to make sure it's nothing worse. Sure explains a lot though.

How are you coping with it?

domari: tigerose: The Great Porn Dragon I used to have a lilac point apple head Meezer. She was the mouthiest thing on the planet! But I reallly enjoyed her older look. When I was growing up, my neighbor had a seal point Meezer. I lurved that cat!

My Mom mourns the loss of the old style Persians, as she had one when she was a little girl. Timmy was her best bud! Honestly, if I could get an old style Persian I might be tempted to get one for her....Her cat Tabby has CKD and is doing well so far, but after she crosses the bridge...she says she won't get another, but....I dont know. She and my Dad would find the house is awefully quiet!

I had an old style Persian when I was young too. I liked them so much more than the flat face cats they breed now. Not only are they uglier but they have so many breathing issues because their faces have been genetically redesigned. I have a flat faced Persian now, she's a mess.

I myself prefer the Traditional Siamese as well as the Traditional Persians (not fond of modern "extreme" Persians for the exact reason you mention--they pretty much have the same health issues as modern bulldogs and Pugs).

For a time in the 90s TICA did list Traditional Persians under the "Sterling" breed standard but this has since been dropped; some cat registries do register Traditional Persians under the "Traditional Longhair" name (notably World Cat Association). Sometimes they're sold as "Doll-faced Persians" (much as Traditional Siamese are often sold as "Apple-head Siamese").

You still can find them...but it's harder than it is for even some unusual breeds here in the US; most of the breeding interest is in Europe (where--again, because of the new law preventing breeds or breed standards detrimental to kitties--"ultra-type" modern Persians are now banned and interest is swinging back around to the more traditional, non-Peke-faced Persian standard as a result). Sadly, there's less interest here in the US than there is for Traditional Siamese.

That said--the Nordic breeds of cat are not bad at all; Maine Coons are nice if you can be sure to get them from a reputable breeder or breed rescue (full disclosure--owned in a time-sharing relationship by a Maine Coon rescue and a Meezer/moggy behemoth)--especially if you can find one of the "old type" Coonies, they're a treasure...and Norwegian Forest Cats are also great (have a friend who was owned by a wonderful Weegie who passed away a few years back) as well as Siberians (the ancestors of all longhaired kitty breeds including Angoras and Persians). They are also--without a LOT of searching--probably going to be more accessible than a Traditional Persian in the States.

xanadian: Missy, my BF's cat of 15 1/2 years passed away this morning at 10:45 AM. She died from FLEAS and the anemia they caused, despite her being treated and dosed with Frontline just 2 weeks ago. :-/ The only thing the vet told us (outside of giving her anti-flea stuff) was "feed her more." :-P Apparently, she was doing fine up until 2 days ago when all her get-up-and-go got up and went. She is sorely missed here. She was a very smart and loving kitty with an attitude as big as the moon.

Awww, so sorry xanadian :(

Chimi, Guacamole, and Gnocchi sleeping. When it's time to play all ten ferrets come running and go nuts, but when they get put back in the cage, they eat some, and then pass out quickly. Macadamia is currently curled up behind my wife on her shoulders and under her hair. She gets attacked by a couple of the other ferrets in the cage, so we have a smaller cage set up for her for right now, and the wife keeps pulling her out and snuggling up with her. She loves human hair for some reason and passes out as soon as she gets back there. I'd put her on my mom's shoulders when she goes down for a nap, but I don't feel like calling 911 later when she woke up and had a heart attack because of it.

tigerose: Brian Blessed's Bastard Boy: lilyspad: Gnocchi getting crushed by Habanero's butt.

I love his little "toofs" hanging out!

They all have their fangs hanging out like that when they sleep. I'm not sure if it's because their faces get relaxed or what, but the fangs come out when they sleep.

I had a cat who had fangs. They hung out all the time! Not always the best thing as they are more prone to brwakage and tooth decay.

My old alpha cat Misha had what we called his 'fang-face smile'. He'd look up at you and the tips of his formidable teeth would be on display. Riktor seems to be developing this as he gets older- two elegant little tips just visible.

micromedic...
Wish I knew how to comfort you...cats will sometimes go and hide when they know 'the time' is near.

Here's an old picture. This was taken while I was in Souda Bay, Crete on a port visit about four years ago. We found these puppies behind a storage shed on the base. Obviously we couldn't take them back to the ship (believe me, we tried) so we found this box for them and would take them food three times a day after meals. They never went very far from the shed, and we had no idea where the mom was, but we did take care of them each time we pulled in. Not sure what happened after we left, but always remembered that they would come stumbling out to us and try and climb in our laps when we brought them food.

It is with deepest sorrow and a great deal of shock that I am bringing the news of our sweet and beloved cat Zoeys death. She was missing, and we have been looking for her. Unfortunately Mr. micromedic found her in the front loading washer. She was NOT washed, and she looked peaceful and without a painful or hard death. We just don't know what happened and are trying to soak it in... We both are at a loss.

Oh No! I'm so sorry to hear about Zoey. :(

Mrs CDK: Hi guise

[i384.photobucket.com image 700x525]

Poor Cooper has yet another bladder infection. He started peeing blood Thursday night. Took him to see Dr Finch on Friday. The doc wanted to see how full his bladder was and barely touched it and he started peeing. His bladder was full but not blocked and no crystals, thank ceiling cat!! I guess it was hurting to pee so bad that he was holding it in as long as he could. He is now on antibiotics and we will start doing sub-q's twice a week to keep him more hydrated because no matter what we do, we can't keep him hydrated enough. He also has some opiate pain medication to make him feel better.

I am so thankful there was no blockage. He has already had 3 and next time (and I hope and pray there is no next time), it's PU surgery for him. Oh, and to make matters worse and make him feel even worse, for some strange reason, out of the blue, he started eating my fern.. I've had the fern for 5 or 6 years now and he's never touched it. Maybe he thought it would help the pain of the infection but all it did was make him sick :(

My sick baby...

If he's plant seeking maybe you should offer him some fresh grass (the lawn type)? Some schools of thought suggest that there are trace vitamins and acids in grass that promote kitty well being. See what your vet thinks.

OK, a couple of more older pics before calling it a day. The first was in United Arab Emirates out in the desert. We went on a Jeep ride through the desert, then ended up at a desert bazaar and ate some food and watched a belly dancer. These two camels were used for camel rides later in the night, but for some reason, didn't appreciate me being on one of them. It ended up bucking and taking off while I was still on. Ended up almost jumping off because I was scared to death I was going to fall off, but stayed on and finally the handler got to me and calmed it down. Got off and found out I had scraped my inner thighs raw and was bleeding, as well as having massive bruises there and on my knees from trying to stay on it's back. Needless to say I never rode one again.

This was in the Seychelle Islands at one of the hotels on the beach. These were Galapagos turtles and were estimated to be around 150 years old. They were absolutely huge, but seemed docile until I got near them. This one took some leafs from my hand then pretty quickly moved it's head back up and hissed pretty loudly at me. Not sure what that was all about, but still amazed at their age and size.

So sorry for your loss.. when they are 'going', some animals want to be alone.. took in a stray from a friend.. named her Miss Chiff, or just Miss.. heard a 'thump' one night, a few minutes later, Miss climbed onto the bed and lay across my feet, as usual.. got up early, went to work.. got home and fed the crew.. she didn't show up.. found her still on the bed, gone. Took her to my vet.. turned out that her heart was 1/3 smaller than normal.. and she was a big kitty.. she wanted to be with me when she went.. others have gone into closets or behind furniture.. It is so hard when they go.. but better that they don't suffer... she'll be waiting at the bridge.... and you gave each other enjoyment and care...

Never did get back into the SAI contest Webcast (overcrowded plus). But there are quite decent write-ups, very descriptive, of earlier sessions not seen either. It's All Done, should get to see rest of write-ups on the morrow. Did note that a quartet called LoveNotes who marked their 10th anniv quite recently, took 3d place in QT finals & were also voted Audience Favourite. May be grounds to buy the DVD; more likely borrow the DVD someone else locally buys. Got Too Much Like That!
Is also way past time for me to go sack out, or in, or someplace.

If you know anyone who puts in a change of address that lives in Michigan,Ohio, or in Western NY...like Ithaca,Rochester, etc. be prepared to see your mail delayed in forwarding at least a week. Our office is getting a flood of mail daily because of a lot of other offices closing. We are doing mail in Michigan that comes from all of OHIO now. I guess it is suppose to be a secret. It might even get worse due to people retiring and new people hiring who have to be trained. Just a heads up to my fellow ham operators. For a long while we did not have much mail. All of a sudden due to the USPS closing offices that did this mail, we are getting so much that they do not even know where they are going to put it. I heard they are even sending some of it to Illinois to get it out. She lives in Hazel Park MI.
