As far as Sandy goes, here on the midcoast of Maine? Frankly, meh. Got an inch or 2 of rain and it was (according to Mrs. Buck; I slept thru it) rather windy overnight Monday/early Tuesday morning. All in all, underwhelming, for which I am grateful. Goes w/o saying that I hope others in the direct path were spared as much hardship and tragedy as possible.

We had power the whole time, but we were lucky. Many are still without power, but at least we are going back to school. Need to feed the bank acct! :) most of our damage was caused by toppled trees. Many very old..200 yr old, lost their grips on the saturated soil. And then there were the 20 ft high waves....

I did not sleep well that night!

Well, there's a tree leaning on my house....
i380.photobucket.com

It fell slowly, so slowly that we didn't even hear it, but the cats did. No real damage, the gutters are dented in 2 spots. The tree company was out here Tuesday, they've got a couple of higher priority jobs (like people with trees through their houses). The tree isn't going anywhere, they'll be here tomorrow or Saturday. I'm hoping Saturday, that way I can get some pictures.

/If you look closely at the sliding door you'll see a lump on the rug.

Other than the deductible, insurance is going to cover it. And it's the neighbor's tree, he's promised to reimburse us the deductible.

Tnx cretinbob for the pix, also relay of word from domari that sherpa's OK, & whoever it was was saw p_v on FB (where I still decline to go).
Snuffybud, hope that tree can be shifted before it does any more damage. When it was still warmish here, Plumbicon was up on the roof with the chainsaw, lopping branches off the closest Bradford pear as that breed of tree's a bit wimpy & breaks easily. Also shoveling leaves out of gutters.

Think this is the one of Furry/Furrnandina/TheQueenMum I intend to put in my profile, small enough so all those resident may go in. That won't be til the Editing's done, quite likely not before next Tue. Haven't decided yet whether we should go to the local radio club mbrs' mtg; probably just to drop off the newsltrs again & head on to Novice Quartet reh at the place Plumbicon's & the Big Chorus rehearse, that he was conscripted to be El Pres of within minutes of his retirement from the TV station almost 9 yrs ago now (early bcs he could!). That's what was done last month. The Novice QT contest will be Mon Nov 19; we're getting to the point where we sound halfway decent. Not like cat wars at all any more!!!

Snuffycat showing me how concerned he is that a tree is resting on the house. He's going to be pissed next spring, that tree was part of Squirrel Route 1. They'd jump from our roof to a branch right outside our kitchen window, then go from there to the neighbor's fence

We got lucky here. The storm tracking showed it was supposed to go through NJ, PA then turn north and cut through upstate NY. When Sandy passed by she bought minimal rain and wind. Our lights flickered a few times but we never lost power. Only a couple hundred people in our county lost power but it was repaired and back on quickly.

Some of my NJ and NYC friends weren't so lucky. One woman I know in Rockaway lost everything, her home, her business, and many of her cats. She was also a cat rescuer, caring for feral colonies, and was part of the death row cats group.

The stories and photos are horrendous. We're really so lucky to have what we have.

Oh my goodness, look who Buddy and I found in the cherry tree just now!
Two fuzzy little babby raccoons!!!
When they heard us coming they ran way up high into the tree. But not too far up for the camera flash.
A weird time of year for babies... but there they were.

This one was very chatty, wouldn't stop chirrupping away to his brother, I think he felt very scared.

i870.photobucket.com

i870.photobucket.com

Here is the second one. This is looking directly straight up overhead! Couldn't take his eyes off me. He was petrified. But SO CUTE.

i870.photobucket.com

Luckily Buddy couldn't see them, only smell them, otherwise there would have been some serious neighbour-waking barking! And terrified baby raccoons.

They were OK. Their mama wasn't far away. We went back inside before she could make our acquaintance though.

Whew! That was fun. OK I can go to bed now. :)

vudutek, best Caturday luck on dtr's wedding tomorrow.
Member of my local amateur radio club announced in an e-mail to the the club reflector, just seen by moi, that we placed 30th of 326 in our cat-egory at Field Day (always last wkend in June) this yr.
Also says the Field Day Chair, who's also hosting Single Sideband Sweepstakes Nov 17-19, has apparently learnt how to herd cats. He & spouse had single Feline Overlord last I heard.
Make-up's on for sing, now just need to dress & lunch early. Move Afoot to Dine Early after we sing.

Sneaking in while on a break from homework...

Love celebrating Christmas, though it's a secular holiday for me. Ultra love celebrating halloween: used to dress up and participate in haunted houses while I still lived states side. Unfortunately, they don't celebrate it over here :(

This will be the first year in the new house (move in first week of December) and I'm planning a few Christmasy decorations :D

Oh, man. I want one so badly! So pretty. How's the personality?

Gotta wait for my poor Cydney to give up the ghost. Bad days are outnumbering the good. But she's not in pain so we take it one day at a time.

He's the sweetest boy. Very curious and playful. Very affectionate. Loves people and will curl up next to anyone. If I get after him for doing something bad, he'll go in the other room and cry until I call him over and forgive him. He has two littly w00t monkeys that, in his mind, have to be together. If I put them in different places in the house, he'll have them together somewhere else by the time I get home.

Shill post coming up -

My son, Jamie, is HFA (High-Functioning Autism), and was diagnosed @ age 3 as 'severely' autistic. At the time, we were told that he wouldn't go to school, wouldn't ride a bike, woudn't hold normal conversations, yadda, yadda, yadda. Well, at 17, he's turned out to be quite the amazing young man. He's a junior in HS, a straight-A student, not only rides a bike, but drives (better than his mother) has completed 3 century (100-mile+) bike rides, and is about the most social kid you'll run in to. He's also a Life Scout, working on his Eagle project, which is to raise awareness, collect supplies and raise donations for the Homeless Animals Rescue Team (HART), a 501 (c) (3) no-kill animal rescue / support group. Jamie's been the one who's picked out all our current rescues (two cats and a dog), and he wants to give back by helping HART.

This is Jamie:

These are our current rescued resident / owners Molly, Tobe and Daisy. Daisy doesn't quite count as a real dog, so she is treading (ever so lightly) on Caturday turf.

....and here are some of the current kitties at HART that are looking for homes:

Jamie's doing a local supply drive for the Homeless Animals Rescue Team (HART), but I also wanted to reach out to FARK to challenge them to help, too. If you'd like to help, please consider donating to HART.

You can donate via PayPal or JustGive.org. I know there are lots of deserving people and organizations, but if you'd consider donating to HART, Jamie and HART's cats and dogs would very much appreciate it.

If you donate, thank you very much - make sure that you tag the donation as 'Jamie Eagle Project' in the 'name' or 'instructions for HART (PayPal), so we can see how much of a difference FARK can make....

If you can't donate, thank you for readling all the way through this post- and thanks for all you do for your kitties.

It's all I can do. It's especially hard because there's nothing that clearly says "it's time to make that horrible decision." The vet has been very supportive. But I appreciate it! She's very special to me.

They do sound like amazing cats. I have two Bengals and an ex-feral fluffy cat, and all 3 fetch! The Bengal boys will drop the ball 2 feet to 8 feet away and expect you to get up and grab it to throw it for them! The ex-feral fluffy girl will bring the ball and drop it in your hand!

I didn't want a cat. I rescued Cyd from the wild when I first moved to Orlando. I was waiting to get settled and get a dog. I always had big dogs. Never a cat. So when I was raising Cydney I treated her like a dog. She fetches, too. The best are the plastic rings (must be unbroken) from jars like sunflower seeds. I roll them, she grabs them, and brings them back to do again.

The nearest Gremie comes to acting like a dog is when he is not where I can see him. He will come when he's called. I yell "Gremie,Gremie,Gremie," and he will come to where ever I am. It must be yelled 3 times or he won't show up. Once he came running up from the basement covered in cobwebs with a look on his face like "this better be important".

Snuffycat showing me how concerned he is that a tree is resting on the house. He's going to be pissed next spring, that tree was part of Squirrel Route 1. They'd jump from our roof to a branch right outside our kitchen window, then go from there to the neighbor's fence

Neighbor's tree, then? Have it charged with trespassing. :-D

Glad that you and the other East Coasters made it through.

Hello everybodeee!

 ^-^
='.'=

Happy Hatching Anniversary to all you Caturdayers who are celebrating your day...and may it indeed be a celebration!

yellowcat: The Florida Caturday contingent hopes all who were in Sandy's way are ok. Glad for the update on lajimi and sherpa. Hurricanes are humbling experiences that's for sure. Once you've gone thru one, you don't forget.

Had a tornado boogie through here a couple years ago...
I didn't know it was a tornado until later (touchdown about 1.5 miles from my house!); just thought that the mother, father and family reunion of all hailstorms was passing through.
Vaguely heard the tornado siren but didn't recognize what it was...just felt really bad for any rescue workers who were out in that maelstrom.
Stood stunned at my front door and watched...the violence was incredible.
Went out after everything had calmed down and the air smelled just...incredible. Sweet, fresh, clean...with the scent released from all the fallen leaves and broken branches...this was the air that's described in so many books as 'never breathed before'.

spinach gunk: Oh my goodness, look who Buddy and I found in the cherry tree just now!

Here is the second one. This is looking directly straight up overhead! Couldn't take his eyes off me. He was petrified. But SO CUTE.

[Luckily Buddy couldn't see them, only smell them, otherwise there would have been some serious neighbour-waking barking! And terrified baby raccoons.

They were OK. Their mama wasn't far away. We went back inside before she could make our acquaintance though.

Whew! That was fun. OK I can go to bed now. :)

When I lived in Oregon there was a family of raccoons (Mama and 3 babies) would come sniffing around my back porch. The babies would take food from my hand with their tiny little warm clever fingers. Mama would stand back, glaring and growling...letting me know that if I even THOUGHT about trying to touch or pet one of the little ones she'd rip me a new one...or several. She did accept a raw egg from me when I (very gently) rolled it to her however...
Does it make sense that I felt honored, being allowed to interact with WILD animals like this?

Thank you - I've already done one FarkUs post, and asked the modmins what the policy / practice is for keeping it visible. They gave the advice to post again, so I've posted here, and will do another FarkUS post after the weekend.....I think it's for a good cause, and while I've already gotten some flak for it being related to Scouting, it's for HART, and Jamie would do something to help them even if he was doing it just on his own.

(I think it's at least as noble as Give Joe the Bird, but that's just my opinion).

Thanks again. It's appreciated.

Yeah, definitely needs re-submitting to the FarkUs tab. Caturday folks are good people, but overall we're a fairly small percentage of farkers. FarkUs will give you more visibility.

Hi Everyone! Happy Birthday to Lilyspad!!
I'm glad to hear that our caturday family seems to be mostly ok from the storms. It gives me a Happy.

Cool Story Sis...
Now you all have to remember that I am old. Its been MANY years since I have had to deal with little kids. I took it upon myself to help out my husbands nephew by watching his kids for him today. The regular babysitter had an emergency. Do any of you know what a handful a 4 yr old, a 2 yr old, and a 1yr old are? I don't think I got to sit for 10 minutes all day. The 1 yr old learned how to walk 2 days ago, so its a whole new world for her. It was a loooooong 6 hours. I think I have watched more Dora, Mickey Mouse Club, and Diego than I have watched any other show in my life. Now don't get me wrong. I didn't mind helping out in an emergency, but damn, I'm too old for this. And the diapers.. the POOPY diapers. Ugggg. Anyway just wanted to let you all know that even though I am old, I still got a little ambition left in me. Although..this is how I feel right now....

Eli the Bitey will come when you whistle for him. My other cats used to do this as well. All I did to "train" him was to whistle when I gave him his food. Always...and then when he'd come when called at other times I would give him a treat..and say, "Treat?" And then toss it across the floor..wtch him chase after it on the wood floor...skid...grab treat/miss treat depending on the velocity...and then watch him eat it with relish! And no not that kind...:)

2012-11-02 05:08:27 PM
Off topic...but about 20 mins after I came home I heard a huge boom! and then what sounded like a load of pots and pans falling off the back of a truck..I went to the front window and saw that the telephone pole was down in front of the house and it was twined around a biiig semi rig's back end...it pulled my pole and the pole up the street down. My son came walking down the street about 5 mins after this happened. If he had not been late, it would have happened right in front of him! Eeeeek!

Oh yeah, and I had just let Eli out to go potty...I wonder when he'll get over his fright and come home!

And I'll most likely have to go to the office I'm scheduled to work in tomorrow - even though there's no power there now, isn't likely to be power there tomorrow and it's 35 miles from my house! I'm really starting to hate my company.

Um, don't you work at a place that has to have refrigeration and uses centrifuges and stuff, or am I confused? (even more than usual)

tigerose: Eli the Bitey will come when you whistle for him.

Most of my clowder come when called...eventually. Raven is the best about this.
They do understand the word "snack", so if I ask if they want one I will have three cats singing the "Feed me, Seymour!" song.
D'Artagnan doesn't care for gushyfud- he'd rather have what the humans are having.

I have a rule about "Don't tease the cats"...which means if they get the idea that a treat is forthcoming (if I inadvertantly rattle the jar where treats are kept) they get their treat.
Makes it a wonderful incentive for them to quit 'being a cat'* and just come inside NOW.

*They want to come in, they're going to come in...but they're going to take their own sweet time about doing so.

Threadjack....
OH!
This time of year there are the most WONDERFUL apples available. They are called "Honeycrisp" and they are beyond delicious.
Big, juicy, sweet and flavorful.

lilyspad: *snip* See you all tomorrow! (and I have the day off, 'cuz it's the anniversary of my birthing day), so you all have a great evening, and I'll catch up in the morning!!
HUGS to all who are still trying to recover from Sandy.....

Happy Birthday, lilyspad! I hope you made the absolute most of your special day!

Like so many others, it seems, I too have a serious case of the Goldfish Memory... If there are others celebrating, I wish you all the happiest of days to come, and for anybody mourning the passing of a loved one (furred or not) I understand your pain... I am happy that so many of us made it through Sandy with minimal (or no!) problems! We kept power, although it flickered... Early snow storm to the west and hurricane to the east - we missed 'em both, thankfully!

I got sent home from work because I have cooties and nobody wanted me around to share! Oh well... I had a nap and got to cuddle with my critters and play with the neighborhood pups for a bit.

Speaking of the neighborhood pups... These two little miniature Schnauzers are looking at losing their home - papa is active US Army and is looking at being redeployed - mama wants to follow him, but pups don't seem to be welcome on base housing. They talked to family members and nobody seems willing to take on both (they're from the same breeder, same biatch, but different litters), and the breeder is not returning calls, even after assuring them that she'd take them in if he were ever deployed and not able to keep them... it would be a shame to separate them. They are Fozzie's bestest friends and Cheech's last day was spent playing with them - they were the only doggy neighbors that would play with him (side note... the anniversary of his death is only four days from today?). Their mama and papa always talk about how anti-social they are, but they love Fozzie, and give me kisses for treats. I may be insane (two cats and one dog with me in a 780 sq. ft. condo), but I could not bear to see them separated... Am I really considering taking on TWO additional pups? On top of the zoo I already have in my little abode? Am I insane? Is this the right thing to do? They may return and be able to reclaim them, but they may not... I did tell their papa to not do anything without first talking to me. Fozzie would be heartbroken if they went away, and I am quite fond of them, myself...

The 3 cats we have had in the past would always come running if we quietly snapped our fingers. The 3 heathens we have now will have none of that rude stuff! They will come if we call them by name, unless they think it is food or treat time and then everyone comes running and skidding to a stop.

Missy, my BF's cat of 15 1/2 years passed away this morning at 10:45 AM. She died from FLEAS and the anemia they caused, despite her being treated and dosed with Frontline just 2 weeks ago. :-/ The only thing the vet told us (outside of giving her anti-flea stuff) was "feed her more." :-P Apparently, she was doing fine up until 2 days ago when all her get-up-and-go got up and went. She is sorely missed here. She was a very smart and loving kitty with an attitude as big as the moon.

Here is a pic of the little girl.

Happy Bird-day, lilyspad!!!

So very glad those who have checked in are doing well after Sandy! I was worried about everyone (and still am... crazy stuff there!)

I don't even know what I just read/saw... so very out of it. Trying to take myself off a med and discovered very quickly that I must move S.L.O.W.L.Y with it because I got hella sick. I was going to back off and only take 2 pills per day, but instead I have to slowly increase the number of hours in between doses. I'm done. I don't care what kind of wonder drugs they claim to have. Over the past almost 5 years, they've given me nearly 30 different meds for the pain that either didn't work or I seriously reacted to. The side-effects are no longer worth it in my mind, so I'm going to start researching natural pain remedies. Still waiting to see the rheumatologist (Nov. 12th). I just want to know what's going on so I know what I'm up against. Trying to set myself up to go back to school w/ online classes in accounting to see if I can work from home. I need to be able to help support the family in some way.....

Miss Cassie is now on her steroid pill every other day. So far so good, though we're only a few days into this. I'm supposed to take her back in for new x-rays in a few weeks (if we can afford it... might have to wait a tad longer). Lars is due for his rabies shot in December, but might have to back that off until January. Both cats are getting used to the guy being home more often, which is awesome! Cassie is snuggled next to me right now. It's amazing how loving both cats are when they know I don't feel so great. Sorry for the wall of text. Here's a cat or two to make up for it.

I've already told the BF that if he were to ever get another cat, to NEVER EVER EVER go to this vet again. He charges easily 50% more for procedures than my vet does. (i.e., he charges $150 for spaying while mine charges $100).

My dog is allergic to fleas and he had a major reaction this summer he lost all his hair and a about 15lbs. In addition to the flea meds the vet put him on steroids and antibiotics. It still took him over a month to get his hair back and gain back the weight.

Heh!

A nap sounds good to me. I got up early today because maintenance was supposed to be at my apartment at 8:15 a.m. to do a minor repair job. Around 11:30 I called them to see what was causing the delay and was told the appointment had been cancelled and they were sorry that they forgot to let me know. And this was after playing phone tag for three days just to get in touch with the right person in maintenance.

It has been raining all week but during the storm the winds never got over 40mph so I just had a few tree limbs come down and a few shingles off the roof. Nothing major. Not even any power failures. Just another rainy day here.
Good to hear most everybody came out all right so far.

Nothing dreadful at all in Pittsburgh even though people all around us were trashed. We got about 3" of rain from Sandy and didn't have any problems at all.
My power didn't even flicker and all the porch furniture is right where I left it.

Good. I've been worried about all you folks over there.

We really lucked out here. It wasn't even what I would consider a bad storm for this area. Yeah....It did indeed rain a lot, but it was spread out over time.
I just can't imagine what it's like near the shore. LBI (my home away from home) is a complete mess. The pictures I've seen are depressing. I hope all our friends near the coast are hanging in there.

Got the bug going around and was home sick on Tuesday. I'd been in bed all day, went to get up to get something to nibble on (ok, wanted a can of Mt. Dew) and went to take a step and BAM, legs went right out from under me. Fell on my foot, don't think its broken, just a bad sprain. I had to have part of the bone removed in my college days (too many stress Fx led to part of it shattering) so now it doesn't take much to make it mad :(

That happened with my Norbert a couple of months ago. She was mopey because I had just lost Diego to cancer and we were battling the fleas (and they were winning). Tried a flea product from the store and between the anemia, the depression, and the meds, she went into shock and I had to make the decision to let her go :(

Hello, everyone! I just got my service back on. Thanks for all of your good thoughts. One of our police dispatchers caught up with me at the command center and told me someone from Kentucky had called and asked about me, I was pretty sure who that was, I don't know too many people in Kentucky. There was minimal damage to Princess Missy Manor, some shingles gone from the roof and a little water in the basement. The Princess and the shed cats are OK. Some of the towns in the Shore Area are just plain GONE! Damage like I've never seen. I've been out with the local volunteers since Sunday night and I'm pooped. I have to say, though, it was GREAT being back in the thick of things again. Once again, thanks for all your good thoughts.

All hail the power of Caturday. I need some creativity and that's not really my strong suit. The local rescue organization I work with is in desperate need of a name change. We're looking for a name that isn't too cute so when we go to the state to lobby for animal issues we'll be taken seriously. We're a no kill shelter and we take in all kinds of animals, cats, dogs, bunnies, birds, etc. Basically, if it needs help we help it. Does anyone have any ideas for a name and a tag line? All suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Now, a picture of Darmok and Jalad

xanadian, sing-cere condolences on loss of Missy. What a truly lovely girl!
TheIceQueen, sorry for your putting a foot wrong. Hope that'll get better, & that it doesn't hurt too much.
ygss, what's the rescue org needs the name change called now? Maybe if we knew what inanity (if so) was trying to be escaped we might have better ideas.
Was out the whole of the afternoon on this singing engagement, plus time for noms en route home. I still have 1 newsltr to finnish rather ASAP, wl see what I can do. Sing did go well, just time consuming.
Am sorta supposed to be watching SwAdelines Intl contest & am not -- think QTs are on now unless they're done already. This is all in Denver. Right now we're called Shelby County Humane Society. We have issues with people thinking we're supported by Humane Society of the US and Kentucky Humane Society and we get funds from neither. We also have an issue with people confusing us with the local animal shelter. We need a completely separate identity so we can raise funds. Anyone have any ideas?

All Species Rescue? We have a place here called 10th Life, which I think is clever. Not reat suggestions, but maybe my poor start will inspire others to think 'I can come up with something better than that!' :) good luck!

ya gotta sleep sometime: All hail the power of Caturday.

Greetings All.. Long week at work.. got lots done ! Spent last weekend doing generator startups and maintainance.. the LP/ Natural gas ones are easy.. the gasoline ones, not so much.. have tried to get people to turn off the gas tank and run the generator until it quits.. keeps the carburetor from gunking up and makes it very easy to start when needed.. a lot of people 'forget'.. they remember when I give them the bill.. rather than explain all over again, I tell them to look at the last bill and think about it..
Kitties are doing well.. most of them are zonked out right now... they will be bouncing off the walls about 2 or 3 AM... haven't released mamakitty yet.. will try to get her chipped this weekend.
We didn't get much of the storm.. no outages, no high winds, not a lot of rain... we really lucked out on this one... and apparently the tidal surges didn't make it this far.. feel sad for those that got slammed.. saw some before/after photos yesterday... wow !! and apparently another storm is firing up for Nov. 6-7.. light rain forecast for this area.. not certain about the strength if this one... suggest that you google 'WXrisk'.. check out the blogs.. this guy is GOOD ! He nailed Sandy before it hit Haiti.. nailed Irene last year... he could use a proofreader on his blogs.. but he,s the real deal....
Time to hit the hay.. bbl..

Tnx ygss. How 'bout Shelby County Animal Rescue, unless that's too obvious & easy by more than half? We'd get Mew Beginnings as suggested by Haruko_, but that might be just a tad too arcane.

lajimi: Hello, everyone! Once again, thanks for all your good thoughts.

xanadian: Missy, my BF's cat of 15 1/2 years passed away this morning at 10:45 AM.

[i249.photobucket.com image 426x639]

For some reason, she liked hanging out in the bathroom.

that's sad. i'm sorry for your loss. Our 2 dogs have been itching like crazy, despite flea collars, flea spray, and Frontline. Mrs. Buck took them to vet this morning; they have mange, even though they are only outside twice a day for their after meal walk.

Vet said this was the 5th case he'd seen this week (in a town of 4900)

Hi guys, I was told to crosspost this over here, rather in the TFD area :D Hopefully I can get some additional advice!

First cat Caturday thread! I hope this isn't TL;DR!
Okay, I have a cute little 8mo Tabby I adopted- he has all his shots, dewormed, microchipped, is a healthy weight- the whole gamut of cat health services. We also have an elderly cat, 13 yo Tonkinese with kidney issues (and the appropriate food for such) who is also otherwise up to date on everything. Both are indoor cats only.

With the older cat, Shawn, we just refill his bowl whenever it's empty because he'll only eat when he's hungry. With the kitten, Crash, he'll eat til he throws up, will attempt to eat the throw up, then Shawn's food, then will try to break into the cabinet his food is in, then he'll try to eat my food, anything in the sink, things that aren't food (sunflower seed hulls, pennies) and then cry for hours outside his food cabinet.

We are NOT starving this cat, he gets more than the recommended daily amount, and given his druthers he'll eat til he barfs and then eat more. He's a wily one- he cries the most when the food cabinet is taped shut or otherwise blocked. He'll freak out until I unblock it... and then try to sneak in when I'm not listening.

He seems otherwise healthy, very energetic and far too inquisitive for his own good. It's just that he's constantly begging for food while he's awake. He eats way too fast as well, so we scatter his scoop of kibbles all across the entire kitchen floor... but he just runs around with his face on the floor to eat them faster. Today I got him a little wicker ball he has to bat around to get food out, but it only slowed him down minutely.

He came home with a big bag of Purina Pro Plan for Kittens from the shelter, and they said not to change it or he'd be shiatting everywhere. We mixed in some of the older cat's pre-kidney disease food as Crash got older (Katz-en-flocken gluten free gold or something) but it gave him the runs. For the record, we call him the shiatten because he's as destructive as his name, not because... ahem.

Any advice would be appreciated! I love him so much and it kills me he cries for food all the time. Must... be strong!

Addendum:
He doesn't seem entirely fond of the wicker ball full of food, but it tuckered him out so there's that at least
The older cat and he "get along" well enough, in that Crash likes to pounce on him and then run away while Shawn just shakes his head in a "wtf r u doin" manner.

He could just be a little shiathead, like some of my babes ;) but you should really take him to the vet and get some bloodwork done. There are several underlying problems which could be causing the excessive hunger. Chances are he's FINE, but doesn't ever hurt to check! If it's not a physical issue, then you can start learning how to change or help the behaviour (ha, good luck with that!)

Hope everything works out okay, and Happy Caturday!

lilyspad: I probably shouldn't even ask this, considering how much trouble I have just getting pics to show up in the thread, but how do you post pics in your profile? AND, if I want to post something on there, can it have the f-word in it, or is that taboo???
I want to behave and mind my manners.....

Oh hi... I skimmed the thread and didn't notice anyone answer your questions, so I will (please forgive me if I missed something, it's getting late and my eyes are wonky).

You can post pics in your profile the same way you do when you post pics in the thread. Go to the "Edit" section of your profile and scroll down, you will see several fields where you can add text and photos. Each field has the little row of formatting buttons above it including the "teeny mountain/show this pic" button. Paste in the link to where your photo is hosted, highlight it, and press that button. Ta-da! Make sure you click the "save profile changes" button at the bottom when you're done. :)

Fark has a filter to automatically replace any naughty words you type with alternate spellings such as fark and shiat and biatch, so everything remains Safe For Work. It can't change image files with naughty words in them though, so if you want to be on the safe side, proceed with caution there. I do believe full-frontal naughty words are frowned upon. But posting a link to images with naughty words in them is A-OK! :)

Good manners never hurt. Other than that, I forbid you to behave yourself here. :)

Happy Caturday everyone! It's been another strange week here at the B4 home. Halloween night after taking the kids out for their candy, we get home and I send the kids upstairs to get dressed for bed only to hear my daughter scream. I go upstairs and she's standing over the incubator. "Dad, the babies hatched!!!!" I look inside and we have seven bearded dragon babies running around, with another four partially hatched. So that means it's a trip to the pet store and another cage. While we're there, the owners go crazy seeing the wife for the first time in forever, so I let them talk while I'm getting the things we need. When I get back to the counter, there she is, holding another ferret. She can tell by the look on my face that I am not agreeing, but I find out that they got a shipment of animal rescues from NY and NJ, and she had put us down as foster parents for ferrets a while back. So yeah, another furry creature has entered the home. She as found in NJ near the beach, and luckily in decent shape. So say welcome to Macadamia the ferret, and Salt, Pepper, Cinnamon, Corriander, Garlic, Clove, and Poppy Seed. And before anyone asks, the baby beardies won't be staying here for long. We will be selling them to the pet store next month in time for Christmas. Now we have to wait and see how many more of the seven remaining eggs either hatch or not. Below are pics of the newbies.

Okay cat people, I have a question. I have a cat that 'found' us from outside who looked pretty miserable, but he's now very very happy in the home, quite a lover and good kitty.

The one odd thing. If you ring a bell, he will eventually vomit. Or rattle keys, or pour pennies out, whatever makes a similar noise, he will start what I call "long licking" and then GACK.

but he doesn't seemed bothered by it. Doesn't get upset or leave or anything.

any clues? Nobody I've talked to has ever heard of that.

Hmmm..almost sounds likeva conditioned response. Like my cat knows when I whistle for him it means food, so he comes running...also might be an issue with his ears...as in the sound irritates his ears, triggering a gag reflex...

I'm so happy it's Caturday. Today I'm going to be searching for my Maine Coons and my orange tabbies. :)

Fell in Love With a Chair I suspect your little monster is eating because he is bored, and he bolts his food because somewhere alonng the line he was hungry...does he get any gooshy food? Try giving him more gooshy food. Also put the crunchies in an airtight container so he isn't smelling it all day long.

When my loudmouth, Eli the bitey gets obnoxious about food, I pick him up and give him lovins..then refuse tofeed him. Or, I will give him a few kibble in his bowl and tell him "all gone"...it really does work!

We mixed in some of the older cat's pre-kidney disease food as Crash got older (Katz-en-flocken gluten free gold or something) but ...

Sounds a lot like my kitteh that had hypothyroidism. He LOVED eating the other kitteh's puke. Plus he would scarf down his food and the other kitteh's food and beg for more. Anything that hit the floor he considered food. I once watched him eat a big chunk of red pepper and a walnut. He hit 26 pounds before he turned 2. You might want to get him tested.

Forgot to tell you, we want to stay away from Shelby County because we are trying to expand and don't want to limit ourselves to one county. There are many animals in Kentucky that need help and we hope to have funds to help many animals.

reigning.cats.and.dogs: I got sent home from work because I have cooties and nobody wanted me around to share!

Think of yourself as a foster mom.Starting out with you will guarantee that they will stay together and buy them more time after papa gets deployed. If it really is too much, you can keep looking for a home for them.

Are you giving him kitten food? It has high protein, fat and calories for growing kittens, all stuff that is bad for cats with kidney problems. He might be eating because of cravings. Or he might be eating because of food insecurity issues.

I don't know what they are called, but there are bowls to help slow down fast eaters. Imagine a standard stainless steel dog bowl flipped upside down.

Use high protein treats to train the little one to do tricks. He obviously has a high food drive. That might help if he has protein/fat/calorie cravings that his regular food is not taking care of.

Get a variety of treat dispensers, hide them around the house, filled with kitten kibbles. Maybe you could find or rig up a holding bin with a lever dispenser with a timed reset so he can't just flip, flip, flip and empty the bin before eating everything in it?

That's all I can think of at the moment. Good luck with the little guy.

Brian Blessed's Bastard Boy: Happy Caturday everyone!

Is Macadamia a permanent fixture or a foster? Either way, she is beautiful (and very lucky). Congrats!

Also, congrats on the baby beardies. How big are they?

Since she's a rescue ferret, I'm going to guess that she will be permanent. We're searching for any word on who her owner used to be or anything else we can find, but I'm guessing she'll be here for good. The beardies are barely the size of my pinkie finger, but very active for short periods of time. Tried to transfer them from the incubator to their cage and they were incredibly quick.

Some of these pure bred cats seem really cool (especially Bengals) but for my part, the best cats in life are free. All three of my cats were ones that were dumped at my place as kittens. My cat Jessica may not have been dumped; her mother may have been feral. At any rate, starving kittens found a home

ya gotta sleep sometime: All hail the power of Caturday.

I have a 2 year old ex-feral kitty who has the same problem with scarfing so fast she herks up everything she just ate. My solution was a bowl from the Drs Foster & Smith website Link which seems to work pretty well. There was another bowl that looked like it would also work pretty well, but I didn't want to dish out $30 plus shipping for one dish (but now that it is on sale I will have to order a couple) Link

If everything else is good for him it may have to be something he will grow out of sooner or later. 8 months old is still pretty young.

The insurance company has done their job, we got the check yesterday. So since I don't have any pictures of the tree coming down I decided to chase all the cats down and take new pics.

Maxim was still pretty down and just not himself, but really begging for attention and wanting someone to play with. And we're all crap at chasing lasers, so we decided it was time to find another kitty for the home. So Mrs Intern, MadAnimalScientist, and I went down to the Animal Rescue League in Ankeny and looked at all the cats, trying to find one who responded well to us. Unfortunately they were all more interested in hiding and running away. (A day care had brought all their kids to see the animals. The kitties were... agitated.)

We were starting to get a little discouraged when we asked if we could pet this shy white kitten we spotted in the corner, and holy damn did she respond. Hopped up on our shoulders, walked around, purring the entire time. She plopped down on Mrs Intern's chest and started nuzzling, and Mrs Intern looked down and asked "Did Jenka send you?"

She got a "mew!" and a headbutt/nuzzle for a reply.

Her name is Yuki, (Means "snow" in Japanese) and she's a seven month old ball of purr. Took her into the vet for her initial exam and they couldn't get a good listen because she wouldn't stop purring. She's got the kitty cold at the moment, and she's sniffling and sneezing up a storm, but thankfully it sounds worse than it is. We've got her on our old friend Clavamox as a preventative, lysine in her food, and lots of TLC and snuggles. The amazing thing to me is how fast Maxim adjusted. With Jenka, it was a three-week process of tense stand-offs, growling, hissing, and the occasional fight every time we tried to introduce them. With Yuki, we did a preliminary introduction on the third day; he walked over, gave a short hiss, bopped her on the head, and walked away. Yuki didn't shy away either; she was totally relaxed the whole time, even with the head bop.

He's checking in on her now. He gives this little trill when he gets close to announce himself, then gives her a once-over. (She's sleeping in her bed, trying to get this crud out of her system)

Brian Blessed's Bastard Boy: Happy Caturday everyone!

OK, got caught up in the hurricane last week, and had to concentrate on making sure everything was taken care of, but completely forgot about this and feel horrible about it. So need to make up for it now. Incredible thanks, hugs, and tears to those who sent cards and a package to my family and wife since she has returned. Martin family, leepj, laulaja, Brad and Suzie, Ice Queen, Ms Brote, Akimbotoo, i_fling_poo, Not So Nice Bunny, Sherpa and Dragon, and Mrs CDK and family. If I missed anyone, please forgive me on that. I think I got all the cards in one place, but the wife put them all around the house, so if I missed one, sorry about that. It most definitely brought tears to her eyes as well as a well placed glare in my direction (she was upset I didn't tell her about it). Thank you all again from the bottom of my and my family's heart. Your kindness and generosity is truly moving and very much appreciated.

I didn't either until I saw the list with our name on it, and all the other animals that had been brought in. Really broke my heart to see all those animals and the poor shape some of them were in. I'm really hoping that they all get back to their owners, but I know it's going to be hard if not all of them are chipped. I told the wife and the rest of the family that if I see anything on Macadamia, I will personally deliver her to her former owners without hesitation. I know how bad it hurts to lose an animal, and with what all is going on up there, any kind of hope is what they are looking for. If we can't find anything or hear anything, then she will be permanently adopted.

xanadian: Missy, my BF's cat of 15 1/2 years passed away this morning at 10:45 AM.

For some reason, she liked hanging out in the bathroom.

Sure, but you have to feed and pay vet bills for purebred cats as well. At least with mine, there was no initial cash outlay. But...

In 2008, there were some terrible wildfires around here. Late that summer, they had a story on the local news about how the local shelter were being overwhelmed by all of the cats and dogs because of people losing their homes. They were offering free kittens, with all of their shots, and spayed or neutered. They showed footage of adorable kittens in cages, and I was really tempted. But I had two cats already, and I didn't give in. About a week after that, I woke up one morning, hearing a kitten crying outside. I went and looked, and I saw this:
i45.tinypic.com
Just one kitten, all alone. She would run and hide under the house if you approached her. So, I started feeding her. Then I rented a trap. Then I gave her a bath, to get rid of the fleas, and pulled off an impressively large tick.

i50.tinypic.com

Then I took her in to get her shots, and get rid of the ear mites, and eventually get her spayed. It would have been much cheaper to have gone to the shelter. But she's been a good cat.

Taking her in was a mean thing to do to my old cat. They look peaceful here, but he was much too old to deal with a kitten, and she would tackle him and try to play, and he would hiss and run away as fast as his arthritic limbs could carry him. Poor old Weasel has gone to the great litterbox in the sky. He too was a feral that I took in.

My wife and I have had a Selkirk Rex/Ocicat mix for the last 5 years.

Oooooh! Pictures? Welcome!

De-lurking to share kitteh pictures. :)

This is Mischief (Missy for short). As Leishu said, we've had her about five-ish years now. She has the ocicat markings with the curly Selkirk Rex fur. She's also very, ah, cranky. She defaults to glaring most of the time.

i1295.photobucket.com

She's also very helpful when I'm playing WoW. Here, she's critiquing my belf hunter and wondering where the nasty bugs went on the monitor.

i1295.photobucket.com

The curly Rex fur makes for extra soft belly to rub. It also makes for curly whiskers too, so on occasion, she looks like a 1920's silent movie villain.

Just introduced Scampi to the Space Catnip that was sent to us. She's done three somersaults and one half backflip with a twist. She's now chasing her tail across the floor and crying when she gets a hold of it. She's half out of her mind right now. And now here comes Sake' to the nip. This should be interesting.

You Are All Sheep: Okay cat people, I have a question.

My best guess?
Previous owner would make jingly noises to try and distract kitteh from yarking or lure it to yark elsewhere, creating a pavlovian response

Too cute! She looks very much like my Tola, who is the silliest cat I've known. She's a very smart-dumb cat - she can figure out how to plug the tub and turn the water on, but she can't figure out how to open a door resting close. She likes one or two pets, if she allows it, and then it's too much! too much! and she runs away. We've concocted a lot of stories around her. She loves and can say "ham". We gave her a piece of roast beef once, and she sniffed it, said "noooo" and walked away. If any cat could ever get some human speech down, she seems like she'd be capable!

Looking cute in her little scratching post house;

I'm so sorry for your loss. The two cats and our former dog had fleas in one of our apartments. Maybe because the fleas were so overwhelming, but I found the FrontLine stuff to NEVER work! I guess I had never thought that cats could die from fleas or flea-related causes - so this is new to me! I found constant flea baths and flea collars worked the best on my lot. At least on my white cat, it was easy to pick the fleas off, ugh. With the collars on, the fleas would gather around their faces. SO glad it got taken care of. But I am very sorry about you losing Missy. And I agree, we should find a way to zap the fleas out of here!

Pierogi seemed to be immune to the lure of the catnip, but Sake' went nuts and mule kicked the scratching board three times before running off to chase Scampi. Fatty Waffles is currently sleeping and not to be disturbed, so we'll check with her later. Mrs. B4 is sitting on the couch napping with Macadamia wrapped around her shoulders nestled in her hair. She's done this with the wife and daughter now, so she is definitely a cuddle baby, at least for now. Scampi has become very chatty here lately now that she's feeling better again. She's also slowly getting acquainted with the ferrets. Still has some trouble with the boy ferrets, but she does love chasing them under the couch, then popping them when the stick their heads out.
I start my retraining Monday for my new job, so really looking forward to that. Wife is currently mulling helping out at the library which is about 5 houses down from us. Mom is also thinking about it as well, but she is only thinking about doing story time for young ones a couple of times a week. Wife also is thinking about helping out with a local bake shop that one of the neighborhood ladies runs. She made some seriously delicious sugar cookies for Halloween, and the wife loves to cook anyway, so it's another idea she's thinking about. She wants to use the cook books I brought her back from all the countries I visited while in the Navy. I got her a couple of thousand dollars worth of jewelry during my time, and those cook books were still her favorite. I don't mind, because there are some awesome recipes in there that we have used repeatedly, and even my mom, Mrs. Meat and Potatoes herself, has even admitted to being surprised at how good some of the things we've made have been, especially when I made her Shawarma for the first time. She never knew she liked Humus until she tried it. I'll try and get some more pics posted today if the kittehs and ferrets decide to be photogenic.

What a lovely kitty she is! Sorry that your elder cat is no longer with you.
Hugs!

This thread making me very misty today as I'm attempting to rehome a couple of mine that SHOULD have gone on when they were two months old. I wanted to get new homes then when they were teeny and hadn't yet wormed themselves into my heart. Hubby has great potential to be a cat hoarder and wouldn't let me because they were his first grandkittens. I have five cats in a one bedroom apt as a result. Anyone in Maine or in New Brunswick, Canada that would like a gorgeous, fluffy chatty tuxedo boy or his quiet, ninja like black sister?

A few months ago, I posted about my mom's cats, Beemer and Blossom. Beemer has since passed away and it doesn't look good for Blossom right now. She's had a wound on her face for several weeks, and the vet was afraid to put her under anesthesia because she might not come out of it. Blossom is 24 years old. My mom got her when I was 13. I'm hoping she's still around when I go down there for Turkey Day. I cannot ask my mom to keep her alive just for that though. She can still jump on the sofa AFAIK. I'm going to try to get a cat memorial urn before I go down there. I'm amazed and grateful that she's lived this long. It literally rips my heart into shreds when I read the stories of pets lost during disasters like Sandy.

Brian Blessed's Bastard Boy: Happy Caturday everyone!

So is Macadamia staying permanently or just fostering?
I can't tell, but are her eyes pink or just the red eye from the camera?

She's a foster for now, but I'm highly doubting finding out her real family with everything that's going on up north. She's very loving and personable. She is having trouble with the boy ferrets and the sisters of destruction though. They always seem rough with new ferrets, but we're keeping a close eye on her when they are all out to play. She has black eyes as she is not a full albino. We've never seen a ferret with her markings before. It really looks like a spear down her back from her tail. We had trouble figuring out her name until I saw some Macadamia ice cream in the freezer and remembered how much the wife loves that stuff. Kids wanted her to be named Vodka, but that wasn't an option.

Brian Blessed's Bastard Boy: OK, got caught up in the hurricane last week, and had to concentrate on making sure everything was taken care of, but completely forgot about this and feel horrible about it.

You're very welcome :)
Tried to find a ferret card. There are not enough ferret cards :(

[i45.tinypic.com image 640x480]
Just one kitten, all alone. She would run and hide under the house if you approached her. So, I started feeding her. Then I rented a trap. Then I gave her a bath, to get rid of the fleas, and pulled off an impressively large tick.

[i50.tinypic.com image 320x240]

Then I took her in to get her shots, and get rid of the ear mites, and eventually get her spayed. It would have been much cheaper to have gone to the shelter. But she's been a good cat.

[i50.tinypic.com image 640x480]
Taking her in was a mean thing to do to my old cat. They look peaceful here, but he was much too old to deal with a kitten, and she would tackle him and try to play, and he would hiss and run away as fast as his arthritic limbs co ...

Enemabag Jones: Relatively recently you had short leg cats. Now we have curly haired cats.

It is good to know cats are finally catching up with dogs, adapting them to humans.

/Want a silver fox.

Actually, the short-legged kitties (Munchkins) are actually a newer breed than almost all of the "rexed" cats (yes, even the Selkirk Rex)--and are still considered quite controversial, because (in general) cat fancy orgs tend to be quite a bit stricter about any breed that could be seen as having bad effects for the kitty in question.

As it is, most breed associations won't register Munchkins because of worries they could be susceptible to spinal issues similar to the two Welsh Corgi breeds and Dachshunds (worries that so far have not really come to pass) and because of a recent discovery that the Munchkin gene is a homozygous lethal (that is, if a kitteh gets two copies of it likely kitteh would be stillborn due to a birth defect incompatible with life), and some won't accept Scottish Folds due to the gene being linked to a homozygous-fatal mutation and arthritis in "Foldy" Folds in particular; pretty much no cat breed where the genetic trait is linked to a trait that could be harmful (especially one with a homozygous lethal) is likely to be approved anymore (this is what killed the Ojos Azules breeding program--there were cats found who were dominant blue-eyed kitties without deafness, but unfortunately the gene responsible turned out to be a homozygous lethal that basically caused feline anencephaly). About the only reason that Manx and Cymru cats are allowed in most breed registries nowadays is because they've been grandfathered in--were the breeds to be started today, it's very unlikely they'd make it into cat fancy associations (outside of TICA, which damn near will take any developmental kitteh breed and is pretty much the "cat fancy" equivalent of UKC or other developmental-breed dog-fancy associations).

(As it is, the future of Manxes and Cymru might well be up in the air in Europe--an EU directive prohibits the breeding of any animal breed known to have a deletrious effect, and the Manx tailless gene is known to be a homozygous lethal (causing feline spina bifida in a double-dose). Technically Manx cats (and Cymru cats, the longhaired version of the Manx) are illegal to breed in much of the EU now--the main difference being that the cat fancies seem to have been ahead of the legislative curve. Dog fancies are going to have rather more issues with this directive...)

Selkirk Rexes are new as far as rexed breeds go, but are not all THAT new for cat breeds (pretty much the breed registry started in 1987, not too long after the LaPerm breed registry)--there was some question over whether Selkirk Rexes might share a gene with LaPerms, but we know now there's a fourth "curly haired kitteh" gene. :D Even better, this is a case of a dominant kitty gene with NO known "bad effects"--the worst that the Selkirk Rex "rexing" gene does is...make a kitty have wavy/curly hair, just like the single dose does, only kitteh isn't quite as burly. :D

The others in turn are:
a) Cornish Rex (the oldest of the "rex" breeds, recessive, thin-coated with loss of guard hairs; some reported issues with malignant hyperthermia under ketamine anesthesia; the stockier "German Rex" may share the same rexing gene)
b) Devon Rex (recessive, decided lack of guard hairs, some susceptibility to malignant hyperthemia under ketamine anesthesia; Sphynx hairless cats used Devon Rex in early developmental program and on rare occasion Sphynx litters will have (furry) kittens with the Devon Rex gene)
c) LaPerm (produces "wavy" coat similar to Selkirk Rex (though not as thick), dominant genetics similar to Selkirk Rex, first known dominant rexing gene and also first rex breed without malignant hyperthermia issues with ketamine anesthesia)

The Selkirk Rex is a distinct gene, of course (which we known now) and also tends to result in an especially thick coat, and also lacks problems with malignant hyperthemia under ketamine anaesthesia. (We don't really know why (especially) Devon Rex, Sphynx, and (to a lesser degree) Cornish Rex have issues with ketamine and react badly--it could have something to do with the loss of guard hairs in these breeds, or it could be due to all three breeds having heavily used Siamese cats in their early breeding program (Devon Rex and Sphynx cats especially still have a very "Oriental" body type, and Meezers are one of the breeds known to have occasional anesthesia issues). LaPerms and Selkirk Rex tend to be rather more robust kittehs in comparison.)

Complicating things further is the Sphynx cat--there is a strong likelihood that its "hairless" gene is actually somewhat related to the Devon Rex "rexing" gene and that it should be considered a "double rex" gene similar to "patched hairless" rats (both genes affect keratin-71, with the Sphynx "double rexed" gene (despite being recessive) being dominant over Devon Rex "single rexed"--there is a direct analogue with the "patched hairless" and rexed coat traits in rats). The canine analogue of

And this is far from the only coat weirdness in cats that's developed as the cat fancy has developed. There is a "family" of hairless cats (the Donskoy and Peterbald) resulting from a completely different hairless gene and which is a dominant; these breeds have a long developmental history in Russia but are controversial in the West due to the gene responsible causing ectodermal dysplasia in a double-dose. There is also a cat breed with a pseudo-rexed springy "wiry coat" similar to terriers (the American Wirehaired cat) which is a dominant trait--the only major side-effect other than the wiry coat is that all cats in the breed have golden eyes. (It's also the rarest breed in the CFA's registry--the CFA being the rough "cat fancy" equivalent to the AKC.)

/and this is probably more about kitteh coat genetics than you ever wanted to know
//thinks it's neat we have a second "wavy kitteh coat" gene without any bad side effects

The Great Porn Dragon thank you for the info! I had read about this breed, and was very happy to see that it is robust.

Back when my Mom and I used to show our household kittehs, I had a judge tell me he wished that my "old style" Maine-Coon was still breedable, as she was so nicely marked..tortie-tabby, in orange, black and cream...he said they will still sometimes breed back a cat from"outside" the pedigree in order to maintain robustness...pretty cool!

This is one reason I like TICA more than the CFA. Their standards tend to favor the wilder "old style" looks in breeds. The lady I got Mika from only breeds and registers with Tica because she breeds the wilder looking coonies.

Yup, especially with developmental breeds or breeds that had a lot of "founder effect" in cat pedigree associations, they will "breed out" to keep from too much inbreeding (and yes, this has been encouraged with Coonies because there were some issues with a "founder effect"--with Maine Coons this is permitted because they're pretty much a basal "Nordic Cat" breed).

And I've actually heard that there are folks who are trying to establish "original type" Coonies as a breed, similar to the success people have had in getting "old style" Meezers recognised as "Thai Cats" or "Traditional Siamese". (There's also folks trying that with Persians, too--especially with the legislation in Europe, expect to see a LOT of "old type" revivals soon. :D)

And interestingly, there may be far more than four rex genes in cats--apparently rexing mutations have shown up repeatedly in cats since the 30s, including at least two developmental breeds that went extinct that may be unrelated to any other rex gene and a few other newer "rexing" genes in cats still being evaluated for their relation to other rexing genes. (At least one of the extinct rex breeds, the Oregon rex, may have "resurrected" in the form of the LaPerm; alas, the Oregon Rex died out before feline genetic testing was available, so we'll never know for sure, but the descriptions of Oregon Rex cats are very similar to the LaPerm.)

Interestingly, at least one of the "new rex" genes has shown up in Maine Coon cats in the New York area, and has shown up sporadically in the breed (the last time outside of New York that it showed up, all the kitties were neutered due to a regulation in the particular cat fancy that the Coonies were registered to that they couldn't make a "derivative" breed due to a spontaneous mutation--it is distinct from Cornish and Devon Rex genes, and may be either the same as the Selkirk Rex gene or a completely new gene--investigation needs to be done with the few "breedable" "Maine Wave" rexed Coonies to determine this). Apparently there also may be a wild-type rex gene showing up in feral cats in the Indianapolis area (because of shelter requirements to spay adoptable kitties, it's unlikely this will ever be a developmental breed unless someone catches a "curly feral" kitten and uses it in a breeding program), and there is a possibility that a new rex mutation could have developed in Australian Manx cats.

At least one of these "missing Rexes" indicates that the American Wirehaired cat might be a "fifth rex" (or even a "sixth rex", as all signs point to the Sphynx gene being a "double-rexed" gene that interacts with the Devon Rex gene) as a now-extinct "Dutch Rex" breed seems to have descended from an American Wirehaired cat; this (interestingly) seems to have been a dominant gene which (in a double-dose) resulted in "double-rexed" cats with patchy coats, almost identically to "patched hairless" rats (which are the result of a double-dose of a dominant "rexing" gene in rats).

There may also be a second or third "wirehaired" gene that has shown up in Siamese in Brooklyn, the basis of the "Brooklyn Wooley" breed in development; interestingly, this one is a recessive, and has hints it may be an incomplete "double rex" gene (usually Brooklyn Wooleys are born bald or nearly-bald similarly to Sphynx cats and develop their wiry coats as they grow).

A good look at the present state of research on the "newer" rex breeds are here (as well as a good discussion of kitty coat genetics in general).

Suffice it to say that (rather similarly to rabbits) the second most common coat mutations in cats (after, of course, long-coated kitties) are cats with various curly-hair, wired-hair, or even "so damn kinked it breaks off at the roots" hair genes :D

/All my cats are rescues or foundlings, but I still find this stuff fascinating
//do sometimes wonder when they'll find the genes that make Meezers and Meezer-kin so darn mewy :D

I had Friday off, we are to take our floating holidays near our anniversary date and birthday...it sucks when birthday is close to end of the year.... they should not be telling us when we have to take our floating holidays. OH well, I got the day off. Next year I am sure it will be different if the acquisition goes thru.

And I go back to Seattle at the end of the month. This time for 5 days. YIKES!

More than likely, they can't ship it because just about every species of honeysuckle in Wisconsin is either prohibited or very, very restricted (because of the fact that honeysuckle can...well...grow like a weed and strangle native plants). Tartarian honeysuckle is listed as restricted, which means you're not even legally allowed to possess honeysuckle wood without a permit (which is usually only granted for such educational purposes as "how to kill the fark out of honeysuckle" or to botanical gardens).

Hence why nobody is willing to ship to Wisconsin...too much regulatory issues + really aggressive DNR.

(There are actually a surprising number of plants that may be common in certain parts of the country but which are restricted or prohibited. One which may surprise people who've never lived with it is wisteria, which is banned in a number of states...because the shiat is FLOWERING KUDZU THAT NOT EVEN ROUNDUP WILL COMPLETELY KILL.)

my cat, not my hand. Since Lily was feral, she tends not to be very trusting of people she doesn't know. So when my step-daughter comes over, she will come out to say "hi", but won't interact much. I have found that if I get out the nip, she tends to be more....playful! And my step-kid gets to have fun with Lily! Win-win for everyone!

valnt9: catmandu: Help! Does anyone know where I can get some honeysuckle wood? (specifically the LONICERA TARTARICA that cats love?) I have been searching online and only can find toys filled with it, I can't find any wood for my own toys.

I found seed for the plant. it's considered a weed!

I've counted 3 or 4 "invasive species" happily living in the yard. One more couldn't hurt!

It is with deepest sorrow and a great deal of shock that I am bringing the news of our sweet and beloved cat Zoeys death. She was missing, and we have been looking for her. Unfortunately Mr. micromedic found her in the front loading washer. She was NOT washed, and she looked peaceful and without a painful or hard death. *drive by post* (literally, I am sitting with my lappy in the parking lot of a community chapel that is offering free wifi)

Hi guise! I can't even begin to read the entire thread right now, I just wanted to check in - Dragon and I are fine, we weathered the storm with minimal periodic power outages, but the aftermath has been a whole different story. Luckily, I seem to live in a tiny little area that was able to maintain power, but everything around me is still blacked out. In addition, there are still multiple road closings and detours, so I can't get very far. The few stores that are open (cash only, using calculators to add up your bill) are almost cleaned out of everything.

My cable TV, internet, and phones have been down since Thursday as Cablevision attempts to repair services to all areas, hence my absence. On top of that, we are now under gas rationing (which is kinda silly, since the stations that have gas have no power to pump it, and the ones that do have power have no gas left). And as I sit here typing this, the radio is talking about us getting hit later this week with another storm, possibly a nor'easter.

i415.photobucket.com

Meanwhile, on the bright side, Dragon was thrilled beyond belief that we had to cancel his scheduled visit with the vet for his next blood test. He also had a great time watching the squirrels fly past his windows during the storm. I am also happy to report that I was able to replenish the sherpa rum supply (which was approaching critically low levels).

More importantly, I apologize if you have not yet received a response to your order/question/payment email regarding the 2012 Haruko Holiday Cards. Please bear with me, what with my busted knee, the storm and the resulting issues, I am way behind, I'm sorry, and I will get to back to all of you ASAP.

*end drive by post* (my knee is screaming from sitting in the car this long)
/ hope to see you all soon!

Scampi doesn't have all her teeth yet, but her fangs are getting big. They now hang out of her mouth and look pretty nasty. The ferrets don't bite us, except for a few nibbles on the feet here and there. I only worry about their fangs when they get nasty with each other. Chimichanga was dragging Scampi across the floor the other day when they were playing. We've had to get the twin sisters off of Macadamia a couple of times. At one time or another, the twins, Muenster, and Habanero get really nasty with baby ferrets, which Macadamia is. She is our youngest at around 6 weeks old.

Hi guise

i384.photobucket.com

Poor Cooper has yet another bladder infection. He started peeing blood Thursday night. Took him to see Dr Finch on Friday. The doc wanted to see how full his bladder was and barely touched it and he started peeing. His bladder was full but not blocked and no crystals, thank ceiling cat!! I guess it was hurting to pee so bad that he was holding it in as long as he could. He is now on antibiotics and we will start doing sub-q's twice a week to keep him more hydrated because no matter what we do, we can't keep him hydrated enough. He also has some opiate pain medication to make him feel better.

I am so thankful there was no blockage. He has already had 3 and next time (and I hope and pray there is no next time), it's PU surgery for him. Oh, and to make matters worse and make him feel even worse, for some strange reason, out of the blue, he started eating my fern.. I've had the fern for 5 or 6 years now and he's never touched it. Maybe he thought it would help the pain of the infection but all it did was make him sick :(

My sick baby...

SnyderCat: Enemabag Jones: colorado_zombie,
Sounds a lot like my kitteh that had hypothyroidism.

Part of me want to start pulling out the cayanne pepper and doing all sorts of truly unethical experiments with that food-driven behavior.

/I am sure hypothyroidism is a horrible, horrible thing.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis *sigh*

And I will take hypothyroid over hyperthyroid any day of the week and twice on Friday.

Oh blargh, I have just been diagnosed with that. Going for a thyroid ultrasound on Tuesday to make sure it's nothing worse. Sure explains a lot though.

How are you coping with it?

I myself prefer the Traditional Siamese as well as the Traditional Persians (not fond of modern "extreme" Persians for the exact reason you mention--they pretty much have the same health issues as modern bulldogs and Pugs).

For a time in the 90s TICA did list Traditional Persians under the "Sterling" breed standard but this has since been dropped; some cat registries do register Traditional Persians under the "Traditional Longhair" name (notably World Cat Association). Sometimes they're sold as "Doll-faced Persians" (much as Traditional Siamese are often sold as "Apple-head Siamese").

You still can find them...but it's harder than it is for even some unusual breeds here in the US; most of the breeding interest is in Europe (where--again, because of the new law preventing breeds or breed standards detrimental to kitties--"ultra-type" modern Persians are now banned and interest is swinging back around to the more traditional, non-Peke-faced Persian standard as a result). Sadly, there's less interest here in the US than there is for Traditional Siamese.

That said--the Nordic breeds of cat are not bad at all; Maine Coons are nice if you can be sure to get them from a reputable breeder or breed rescue (full disclosure--owned in a time-sharing relationship by a Maine Coon rescue and a Meezer/moggy behemoth)--especially if you can find one of the "old type" Coonies, they're a treasure...and Norwegian Forest Cats are also great (have a friend who was owned by a wonderful Weegie who passed away a few years back) as well as Siberians (the ancestors of all longhaired kitty breeds including Angoras and Persians). They are also--without a LOT of searching--probably going to be more accessible than a Traditional Persian in the States.

Macadamia is currently curled up behind my wife on her shoulders and under her hair. She gets attacked by a couple of the other ferrets in the cage, so we have a smaller cage set up for her for right now, and the wife keeps pulling her out and snuggling up with her. She loves human hair for some reason and passes out as soon as she gets back there. I'd put her on my mom's shoulders when she goes down for a nap, but I don't feel like calling 911 later when she woke up and had a heart attack because of it.

I love his little "toofs" hanging out!

They all have their fangs hanging out like that when they sleep. I'm not sure if it's because their faces get relaxed or what, but the fangs come out when they sleep.

I had a cat who had fangs. They hung out all the time! Not always the best thing as they are more prone to brwakage and tooth decay.

My old alpha cat Misha had what we called his 'fang-face smile'. He'd look up at you and the tips of his formidable teeth would be on display. Riktor seems to be developing this as he gets older- two elegant little tips just visible.

micromedic...
Wish I knew how to comfort you...cats will sometimes go and hide when they know 'the time' is near.

I like how that's done. I want to do something like that in the basement center room.
