The most depressing part of Land Before Time is when one finds out about the death of the voice actor of Ducky. Link

Also I got choked up as a kid when the second death of Charlie From All Dogs Go to Heaven.

Hey guys, was someone talking about sad animated movies?

Hey that's the one. Her brother was an asshole, fed her marbles and let her eat mud cakes.

The boy was a 6th or 7th grader. Those were hard candies from that little tin box. Mud cakes are not an unusual diet item among the starving in wartime conditions, they fill your stomach and keep away the hunger pangs.

//A grandfather took a hike on Bataan in '42. He knows about the mud cakes.

Do see it. It is a really good movie. It was totally not what I expected and loved it.

No love for Ace from Batman.

That's a tear jerker, too.

SilentStrider: Before looking at the list, the only one I thought had to be on there was Up.

That's not really a movie death. More of a movie life. It's its own category.

2012-11-01 11:59:09 PM
The worst part about that opening sequence from Up is that it hits in waves. There is the young love turns into marriage hit, then the inability to have children hit, then the melancholy of thinking that you have let down your love by not realizing her dreams hit, then the sickness and dying hit, then the final tear jerking part, which is more uplifting yet still sob-inducing, where he looks through the book and comes to the "Stuff I Want To Do" section and expects it to be a blank unfulfilled canvas, then he sees that it is full of snapshots of everyday moments of their life together, and that they lived the greatest adventure of all together

/sorry if that was a run-on

UberDave: Nabb1: The opening sequence of "Up" made me cry like a little baby the first time I saw it.

The first time I saw it was on DVD. After that scene, I paused the damn thing and looked at my wife, who was in tears, and said, "What the &#@% are we watching?!"

I had put off watching it because my wife's mother died a few years ago and her father now lives with us. I knew what was coming in the movie and I expected the waterworks from her, but she seemed oddly unmoved by it. Probably not really a good thing; it suggests to me there are some unprocessed issues still going on there.

I just want to add my 2 cents for Grave of the Fireflies.

It's a devastating movie which I've found unparalleled - maybe Schindler's List - but there's something else that brings it another layer of sadness .. maybe because it's animated and you don't expect such sorrow in what is traditionally a "light" format.

Anyway, it's linked above. I urge everyone to see it, but be warned the subject matter is very serious and it's a very sad film.

While I see a Farker here named Dinobot, I'm shocked nobody's mentioned Dinobot's death in Transformers: Beast Wars, I think the episode is named "Code of Hero" or something like that. I was shocked to see such a deep, symbolic storyline in a cartoon.

One of the best episodes in the entire series. Uncle Iroh lamenting his son that died under his command at the gates of Ba Sing Se. That cements the entire reason for Iroh rebelling against his brother.

1986. Generation One. No main character had ever died in the show. The movie comes out, we see most of the Season One and Two characters, all well-known and beloved to the kids of the time (especially Optimus Prime), brutally slaughtered before our eyes. Maybe now you'll understand why it was a sad moment.

Grave of the Fireflies is powerful stuff. Beyond Saving Private Ryan, beyond a lot of things.

If you haven't seen it, know that you're not going to have a good time. That movie will emotionally core you out with a melon-baller. This doesn't mean it shouldn't be seen; it's a seriously impressive work.

But it's nothing you'll keep on your bookshelf or DVD collection. Even just running across the title later in life makes you feel ruined.

Hold to the truth in your heart!

If we hold on together,

Dreams see us through to forever!

For you and I!

Souls in the wind
Must learn how to bend.
Seek out a star,
Hold on to the end.
Valley, mountain,
There is a fountain
Washes our tears all away!
Words are swaying,
Somebody is praying,
Please let us come home to stay!

If we hold on together,
I know our dreams will never die!
Dreams see us through to forever!
Where clouds roll by
For you and I!

When we are out there in the dark,
We'll dream about the sun!
In the dark we'll feel the light
Warm our hearts, everyone!

If we hold on together,
I know our dreams will never die!
Dreams see us through to forever!
As high as souls can fly,

For you and I!"

I tried watching the show when it was first run syndication. The stories and 5 fps animation hurt my head.

Aye, that one really killed me watching it in the theater as a kid, the fact that Megatron blasts him in the face didn't help either. But the one death from that movie that really sticks with me after all these years: Prowl with smoke coming from his mouth. For some reason I've always found that one a little too REAL.
