Doesn't matter one bit. PSU football, the motivation powering the coverup, keeps on rolling. Scholarships lost and a pittance paid are nothing. PSU is still on TV and has circled the wagons. The culture did not change, will not change, and goddammit nothing substantive happened to prevent football being valued over little boys in the future.

I'm not even laughing about the "committed no crime" part (knowing our farked up justice system, anything can happen), but if he honestly thinks he'll actually clear anything or earn back any "national reputation for integrity" he's got a few surprises coming.

In all fairness PSU only covered up 1 buttrape. That puts them far behind (pun intended) the:

1. Catholic Church
2. US prison system
3. Boy Scouts of America
4. US Armed Forces
5. Republican Party

So really why shut down PSU football when these other organizations/institutions have a much better history of butt raping?

Actually, they covered up multiple rapes on at least 10 victims. But the rest of your point is accurate.

PSU did? I don't think so. From what's been reported only 2 rapes happened at PSU and they reported the first 1. You may be thinking of the rapes covered up by the Second Mile, Sandusky's Wife, the local high school, the state college legal system, and the parents of some of the victims.

2012-11-01 09:43:39 PM
When asked for his opinion on the matter Sandusky said "I hadn't heard anything about it. I'm feeling a little behind." then he sighed and stared into space for 20 minutes.......

Why? The football players didn't butt rape those kids or cover it up. They didn't walk into Enron and arrest the
linemen. They arrested the execs. What kind of power structure punishes the peons for crap management messed up? If that's the way you want to do it then the players need to receive the same pay as the management since they obviously under your system share the same responsibility.

You could kill football without punishing the kids. Offer them either the chance to finish their education with their scholarship remaining in force, or the right to transfer anywhere that will take them without having to sit out. Presto! No football, and nobody but the administration got hurt.

subby is funny, thinking a rich well connected white person is going to prison.

a few months in a minimum security facility, followed by years of home confinement a la martha stewart, if anything at all. then its off to a plush job in the govt or as an exec in the private sector thanks to his other rich well connected white friends.

What's the point though? Nobody in PSU football now had anything to do with the kiddy diddling or the cover up. You got the kiddy diddler and the cover uppers. Now let's get the rest of the cover uppers like Dottie Sandusky, the members of the second mile, the local school offiicials, trustees that knew, and the local law enforcement that failed on the 1998 case.

Dan Wetzel did a phenomenal article on Spanier today: Link. Here are some of the highlights (or lowlights, really):

The new information is almost as disturbing to read as Sandusky's initial acts. Kelly always maintained the case was an ongoing investigation and said additional documents and witnesses came forward over the last year. That included material from Penn State, which she said was non-compliant to requests and a subpoena until after the initial indictments were handed down, Spanier and company were removed from power and the school's board of trustees demanded all employees comply with the investigation.

"The grand jury issued a subpoena in December 2010 but pertinent emails and other key evidence were never turned over until April 2012, after these men had left their jobs," Kelly said.

That includes obvious non-compliance with subpoena 1179, half-hearted searches for any documents involving Sandusky - including not going through files in the athletic department, where he worked for decades - and Spanier's blatant mischaracterizations to employees, board of trustee members and eventually a grand jury about his knowledge of the situation, most of it refuted by testimony from his own university attorney.

...

The grand jury appeared stunned by the differing ways that Schultz, Curley and Spanier dealt with the 1998 and 2001 allegations.

...

[Curley, Schultz, and Spanier] ignored major parts of a subpoena, offered little to no information and appeared most concerned about protecting themselves. Even after the trio, and Paterno, knew Sandusky was under investigation and each man had testified to the grand jury, Sandusky still maintained access to Penn State facilities and brought children, dubbed "guests," to football games.

Can't believe Curley, Schultz and Spanier dicked around with a grand jury like that...especially when it's clear they knew the extent of the problem and the legal ramifications. If PSU had any class they would've self-imposed the death penalty on the football program for a year. But big-time college football just makes too much for anyone (including the Big Ten and NCAA) to do anything meaningful.

There's a difference between punishing those who deserve it (Sandusky, Curley, Schultz, Spanier, probably Paterno had he lived) and those who don't (pretty much everyone else at PSU). Pretty much all of the vengeance vulturing I've seen from people wanting to punish the latter is predicated on the inability to punish Joe Paterno.

Not saying it is right, but spouses would be the MOST understandable people for inaction in such instances. You really do become one person with your spouse after awhile. Does not make it right, just more understandable.

/ I am, frankly, not 100 percent sure I would rat my wife out for a huge crime. Id like to say I would. Im just not sure.

This.

And the degree of the punishment hasn't been enough to discourage something like this from happening again at another school where the football program generates huge piles of cash.

I predict that something similar will happen again. And it will happen at a university: 1) Whose football or basketball program is a multi-million dollar business, and 2) The school is far enough from a major city to prevent journalists and outsiders from publicizing the charges or investigating too deeply.

Penn State football was not shut down by any action of the legal system. It was penalized by the organization that sanctions college sports. Penn State is a voluntary member of that organization.

Save for the fact that they weren't?

(Spanier was a rather vocal Democrat, IIRC having had the displeasure of working with him)

BTW: what does it matter? I'm more interested in what they did (or in this case, didn't do) than in their political leanings.
