Probably because it sucks doing all those limit equations, especially with trig functions, the long and hard way. Once you know the rule(s), derivatives are much easier.

I know! I've never had to use exponents in my life ever again, but a day doesn't go by without having to whip up a discontinuous Galerkin spectral element method.
