Is this a repeat of yesterday's story? I don't think it is.

Be smart sharks, go for the fatties. Don't go for the fit people, they're more likely to punch you in the face or use their innate Tae Kwon Do ability to explode your heart

I wondered the same thing, but nope, there's just a lot of shark punching going on lately.

/not to be confused with donkey punching, that's a completely different animal.

Is shark punching a new extreme sport that we are just now hearing about?

I highly doubt any martial art will allow you to fight off a shark. Yes, you learn to hit harder, but sharks are not known for being afraid of taking a punch. Except to the eye, in which case you'd have a better chance.

And yet, this is the second story in as many days about someone fending off a shark by punching it.

How hard can you punch underwater anyway? Water resistance and all that.

antidisestablishmentarianism: Is shark punching a new extreme sport that we are just now hearing about?

No, that's always been the standard advice: to punch the shark in the face. They're most sensitive there, and despite being perfect killing machines, sharks prefer their food to not fight back.

/Also standard advice: If the shark attack persists, overpower it with your stump

Well indeed, but to a shark a whack on the snout is the equivalent of a kick in the family jewels to a human male, as another commenter observed, so she done good.

I have seen first hand the effects of popping a shark in the nose and you can tell they really, really don't like it.
