That's what I was thinking. Article mentions downed power lines that made the attempted rescue by first responders difficult.

Based of yesterday's NPR story on this, he did save a couple people by pulling them from their rooms and taking them to the attic. Including a baby. He was in the process of looking for his father, who showed up in the attic right after he left, when he drowned in the basement.

Right? I understand the lights are out, the wind is howling, it's hard to see and hear, but it's still weird. Did he and his father both go looking for each other, because it sounds like he knew everyone else was safe and just wanted to check how badly the basement was flooding. How do two people go looking for each other in their own house and miss each other? How does an able-bodied man drown in his own basement, unless 1) he gets trapped inside as it fills up, 2) he slips and is knocked unconscious, or 3) he's standing in water while a power line hits it.

I try not to do the second-guessing thing, and it's certainly tragic, but that was a pretty unclear article.

not to minimize your idiocy BUT maybe just maybe they were in the basement because they were afraid of the gale force wind and didn't account for the flooding which came suddenly... or they thought wind would be more dangerous than water which most times it is.

If they evacuated 2 days before the storm, it would not have been an issue.

I know the Cop would have had to stay because of his civic obligation, however, the rest of the family should not have been there.
