Normally, I'd side with the kids, but middle school girls may be some of the most naturally irritating people on the planet.

Over the weekend the wife and I took our boys to a Halloween event at Wicker Park in Chicago (no Wicker Men in Wicker park).

One of the costume parade winners was a little girl whose Cookie Monster costume was a tutu with cookies all over it and Cookie Monster's head situated on her abdomen.

It was both adorable and, of you stopped to think about it, delightfully horrific.

I remember getting sent home from school in the ninth grade because I went as a retarded kid with his cock sticking out the bottom of his cut-offs. And it wasn't even Halloween!

We had a third grade girl yesterday who was dressed as what I can only describe as either a hooker or a stripper. None of us were really sure what her "costume" was supposed to be. Go-go boots, nylons, short skirt and a clingy top. A high school girl who wore it would have been sent home immediately, but they allowed the little girl to stay. I think everyone was just too stunned to say anything.

Wow, those girls couldn't have been MORE covered up. Since when does jeggings with shorts over them constitute slutty? The shorts have to be to the KNEE - OVER pants? And what about the boys - anyone checking for asscrack or innappropriate skinny jeans?

News flash: Schools with dress codes allow for teachers and administrators to be incredible douches. Especially when "the final decision rests with teacher/administrator".

As soon as they decide you've violated the rules, you've violated the rules, and no amount of semantics, showing them the rules and your clothes conform to them, asking for a realistic look at the situation (it's farking HALLOWEEN; kids aren't going to be wearing "the uniform" that day anyway, especially if you allow them to wear costumes), calling in a parent, etc can change that.

// went to a HS with a dress code
// had my collared, full button-down shirt tucked in for me on more than one occasion
// my brother was "asked" to shave his beard (forced, under penalty of suspension) without any rule allowing the school to make such a request - but it's a private school
// the rules are what they say the rules are, and no amount of "showing them the rules" will change that

Probably also because no one is willing to tell a third grader that she looks like a sexpot.

Maybe the school's problem wasn't with the costume itself, but with Cookie Monster's glorification of milk and cookie abuse.

I would take the job as United States Schools Super Attendant just so I could suspend at will every single one of these so called administrators that treat kids this way. They will allow cheerleaders in their costume, but have a huge problem with these kids?

I would hold a special in my office suspension of every useless administrator that makes these bad calls to shine my shoes until I think they shine enough, while they were on my feet, just after I ate a ham sandwich so I would fart a lot.

You're either allowing costumes or you're enforcing a dress code. Don't try to do both.

My old high school s new cheerleader uniforms actually have the girls ass exposed as well as their midriff. They also allow middle schoolers on the team. My ex's niece quit in 9th grade because she was sick of being sexually harassed in uniform & grossed out by the sexual exploits of her team mates. If any kid tried to wear an Halloween costume of similar structure they would be suspended & sent home. This double standard is nothing new. As for Halloween costume makers and idiot parents stop sexualizing your kids!

There is no skin that was showing. The principal is a douche and the teachers that reported the girls are a bunch of brown nosers. This is nanny state more than precious snowflake.

Probably was concerned for the male teachers getting evil thoughts in their heads. The nasty little sluts were just too much temptation. Why was a pagan holiday allowed in school anyway?

Some people live for enforcing rules and being assholes. The cheerleading coach at my school was of the type who carried around a ruler so she could bust girls for violating the dress code. One of her favorite targets was the basketball team. The rule said skirts could be no more than 2 inches above the knee. Some of these ladies were very tall and were expected to dress up on game days. 6 inches above the knee for them was still far from inappropriate. Of course this woman wanted her cheerleaders to be in uniform on game days and their skirts, which didn't meet dress code guidelines, were exempt.

Grace Jennings insists that she and her friends weren't trying to flout any rules or 'push the limits.'

"They didn't say anything about my purple hair, but it was covered," she says. "I know it's bad, but I want to test it."

Ahh, testing the waters. That's also known as 'pushing the limits,' you'd probably understand better if you focused a little bit more on learning and a little less on being a special snowflake.

Sorry kids, but as much as I support costumes in school on Halloween, I gotta give this one to the faculty.

You were repeatedly told over the intercom for DAYS prior that any costumes still had to comply with the dress code. What you wore did not comply with the dress code, which you otherwise manage to comply with all the rest of the year.

You pushed the boundaries, and the boundaries pushed back.

From the video, I kinda got the impression that the girls knew they were testings the limits. They admit as much about the hair coloring in TFA.

It seems to me like these kids wanted to test the limits of the dress code and the faculty decided to meet them halfway and send them to the "Uniform Closet".

Dr Dreidel: Schools with dress codes allow for teachers and administrators to be incredible douches. Especially when "the final decision rests with teacher/administrator".

Having taught at a school with a dress code, I'm still mystified at the mentality that drives it. I appreciate the value of discipline and firm standards of behavior, but if your students are so well-behaved that you have no greater complaint against them than that you don't like the way they look, you really ought to be grateful for it. More likely, tackling the serious problems of behavior is work enough for anyone.

There is a theory that wearing a smart uniform has a good effect on attitude and behavior, but I didn't observe any evidence of that. I did notice that students with a bad attitude toward the school tended to wear shabby uniforms, which only makes sense. If you hate something, being forced to wear a visible reminder of it is about the most obnoxious way of having it shoved in your face. If anything, it's bound to make bitter students all the more resentful and difficult to work with.

My best guess is that uniforms and dress codes are a simple, objective way of presenting an appearance of good conduct. What constitutes "disruptive" behavior and "rude" language is a matter of opinion, but a ruler applied to hair or hemlines will give a number that no one can argue with. Enforcing that kind of rule does no good, but it seems to give certain people the feeling that they're in charge, even if they can't be obeyed in important matters. Basically, it's a power trip.
