queezyweezel: As a St. Louisan who's never been up to Minnesota, what is the mississippi river like up near the headwaters? It's almost a mile wide down here and 30+ feet deep, so swimming in it is somewhat suicidal.

Although the headwaters are in a state park and you can walk threw it.
ShereKhan: In St Cloud the Mississippi is about 150-200 yards wide north of the dam, and about 30-40 deep. Downriver from the dam its 5-20 feet deep and 100 yards wide until you get to the Coon Rapids dam about 60 miles down river. It becomes Navigable in Minneapolis with minimum depths of 9 feet for barges, but in St Paul it starts moving very fast./Went to college at St Cloud State//Walked across the river in the winter///Floated on a tube from Little Falls to St Cloud////Canoed from St Cloud to Coon Rapids
