I predict that like all the other states that have allowed carry, both open and concealed, pretty much nothing will happen.

2012-11-01 12:09:08 PM
Never understood open carry. With concealed carry you never knew who had a gun. That is a deterrent.

With an open carry you are just showing people who want to take your gun where it is.

That leaves what, six states left that ban open carry?

I have a CCL and still think this is dumb.

I'm kind of with you on this. I'm all for C&C. Open carry means that the bad guys will just look at wait for no guns before doing the bad guy stuff. They gotta roll the dice on C&C.

The truly retarded part is that you have to have a CC license to open carry according to their new law.

Ive open-carried for years. Only two run-ins with ignorant cops, but other than that, nothing.

I'm not sure on the exact "official" count, but I know there are several states where open carry is technically legal, but in practice isn't. As of a few years ago at least, New Hampshire was one such state; at least in large parts. You could legally open carry, and you wouldn't get in trouble for it....they'd nail you for "inciting public panic" or some other bs.

Not to mention you are advertising what you own. Shiny new Glocks and premium stainless steel .45s just begging for it. Because a gun in hand is worth ten in a visible holster.

Open carry would be nice when your hunting so you don't have to mess around with bulky cases or sleeves when you just want to jump out of your truck and shoot.

Admittedly, a very limited case to support OC.

So if you open carry, the bad guys won't act until you leave, but with C&C you roll the dice that they could strike at anytime?
Sounds like open carry is the way to go-thanks for the advice!

Which is exactly what virtually all gun carriers want. Only a lunatic would want to be in a shootout. That's why OCing is called a "deterrent". If someone is going to commit an evil act, I'd prefer they wait until I leave.

Yea pretty much.

I don't agree with open carry, but as a choice. I don't see an issue if you have a legal license to carry.

eliminate the risks of a wardrobe mishap, such as when someone carrying a concealed weapon breaks the law by accidentally exposing the firearm

This is a good point though. A lot of people are constantly worried about printing and getting in deep trouble for it.

Vermont here.
You may carry open or concealed, no permit required. No training required.
You may not conceal a weapon that is over 6 feet long, by state law, however.

Oregon has open carry, but you don't have people getting gun down in the streets regularly.

Now, the police frown on you open carrying, because they get phone calls of a man walking through downtime with a sidearm strapped to his belt, and they have to investigate regardless of whether or not he means harm, but you can open carry.

Amazed at how many gun toting libby lib libs I know. Of course, that doesn't stop the RW derp about liberals taking away their gun rights...

This. CCW courses (AFAIK) do not teach you weapon retention or move and shoot. Weapon retention was the longest day of my life at the academy and that was 4 years ago. Never forgot the lessons I learned. I brought that knowledge along with me when I took my course; there were several people in my class who needed to be far, far away from ANYTHING even remotely resembling a firearm. (Namely the gal who lasered our instructor with her pink Taurus. SMH.)

I'd trust them with a butter knife. Maybe.

With that said, as an Oklahoma resident, if I'm in public minus my 5-month-old son, I will assess the situation according to my training and skills. If I am in public with my son, I'll be a great witness. I'll leave the open-carrier to get all John Wayne/OK Corral/Tombstone and watch the chaos unfold.

I will also be sure to be as far away from the open-carrier as possible. I would wager that a portion of the open-carriers do NOT have a lot of range time. I'll keep myself out of their line of fire, thank you very much.

The open carry law helps protect the CC license holders. You can have a CC license, and get into problems if someone sees you pull out your weapon for something as benign as your holster needs to be adjusted. Suddenly you're not carrying concealed, now you're brandishing a weapon. You can be arrested for that even with a CC license.
With open carry laws, that pretty much goes away.

2012-11-01 01:20:44 PM
p.s. I should also add the same thing (range time, OK Corral) for CCW holders as well.

Some, but not all, etc. etc.

Yeah, but what *SHOULD* happen is that the concealed carry laws should be written so that accidentally displaying your firearm isn't a crime.

Having said that, I'm OK with both open carry and concealed. Both have their theoretical advantages and disadvantages, and probably the best results would happen if you allow both.

There's an indoor range not far from my place and you can tell a lot of off-duty cops go there to shoot on the weekends. The one thing I've always noticed its the younger, fitter cops that you see walking in and out.

I recently went into a fast-foot restaurant in NC with my family and there was a guy wearing a gun and holster. Knowing the general education level of the rural NC population, and having my house shot by hunters upset at "no hunting" signs, I did not feel safe trying to eat in the same location as a guy sporting a mullet, a camo outfit, and a large handgun.
