(NYPost)   Meanwhile, in NYC, the mayor said he hopes motorists will pick up strangers standing near bridges. Got that, everyone? In NEW YORK CITY the mayor wants you to pick up strangers standing near bridges   (nypost.com) divider line 136

Please, people, I beg you - Mayor Bloomberg has gone insane. Do NOT pick up strangers standing near bridges going into Manhattan. Also, do not buy electronics or other merchandise from them. Stay inside your vehicle with the windows rolled up and the doors locked at all times. If a woman standing on the side of the road yells at you "How much?", do not answer her. She is a prostitute looking for business, and is diseased, much like the Mayor's mind.

Do they check occupancy mid-river or at landfall? I need to know whether I can toss my passenger into the river or must let him off on the island.

That picture has a ludicrous number of crosswalk signs. You don't need them at signalized intersections.

Photobucket is a pretty annoying spot to hotlink from, I tend to avoid it like the syphilis that it's become. Good on them for preserving their precious bandwidth, I'm sure the cost savings will help them greatly during the inevitably instagram buyout.

During the MTA strike a few years back I carpooled with strangers to work from Brooklyn to Manhattan. It was sure as shiat better than waiting in an hour line outside in winter waiting for my turn to get on the water taxi from the Brooklyn armory. One day I took my turn as a driver and picked people up. This was a result of Bloomberg doing the same thing regarding car traffic into the city. Less than 3 people in a car and you couldnt drive in. I would normally have taken the R into the City.

/Its not unheard of or scary

In New York City, a stranger's just a friend under a bridge you haven't met yet.

Those of us who grew up near Detroit won't be doing that anytime soon. And not because we want to maximize car use.

Similar measures were in effect after the Sept. 11 terror attacks

and after the blackout in the summer of 1978 and the blackout in the summer of 2002 as a matter of fact this is a regular occurrence in the NYC disaster playbook.

at this point, i don't care, cars can pick up whoever they want. i just want some relief from the traffic. i was heading uptown on the 3rd ave bus and it took an hour and a half to get 20 or so blocks because the absurd number of cars that were going up to cross the bridge to queens. it was the worst traffic i've ever experienced in the city. i walked the last 40 blocks to where i was going and got there faster than i possibly could have by staying on that freaking bus.

/no power in my apt

Aside from being dangerous, isn't hitchhiking illegal in New York?

JohnAnnArbor: Those of us who grew up near Detroit won't be doing that anytime soon. And not because we want to maximize car use.

Grew up near Detroit. Have picked up a few people hitching rides.

*To be fair*, the only folks I didn't know I gave rides to *in* Detroit were friends-of-friends needing rides from shows.

I've given rides to half a dozen people I didn't know when I commuted along certain mile roads that also had SMART lines in the suburbs, though. Having taken the bus in college (and the two days a week I don't carpool now; hey, free pass, no parking worries, and SO and I share a car anyway) I'm usually pretty good at spotting the "HOLY CRAP I JUST MISSED MY BUS I'M F--KED" person and I somehow always ended up beating the bus and dropping them off just beyond it in a few miles anyway.

That said, it's getting freaking cold and I *know* I'm not the only person who commutes from my neighborhood to downtown. I'm gonna hit up Craigslist and try to find a carpool for those two days a week.

That said, the DC system is totally awesome. And part of its awesomeness is that it's so organic I doubt it could be easily replicated anywhere. And I'm sure people have tried.

Oh, they'll slug you in New York for sure.

That said... this isn't really that crazy. As previously noted similar measures have come up for NYC during previous crises. And considering the problems NYC is facing right now it makes a lot of sense.

Having fully functioning mass transit and all streets open would be better, but that ain't in the cards quite yet.

The New Yorker's psyche is restless and workaholic. Of COURSE four millweren't us were all going to try to get to Midtown once we heard it was safe.

City should have instituted, at a minimum, the same traffic restrictions as during the 2005 transit strike.

Staying home tomorrow to avoid the inevItable shuttle shiat show that will be happening from Atlantic Center through to the Manhattan Bridge.

/has anybody seen the bridge?
