I think there's an explanation:

Since 2007, the Senate Historical Office has shown, Democrats have had to end Republican filibusters more than 360 times, a historic record.

Blame the Party of "No". A filibuster is like a spoiled child throwing a tantrum.

What was Dick Morris saying at this point in 2008, an obvious Obama win?

UNDECIDEDS SHOULD BREAK FOR MCCAIN
By Dick Morris on October 29, 2008

Published on TheHill.com on October 28, 2008

He also says that Obama's personality was so strong the race changed from a referendum on Bush to a referendum on Obama. Also

"If he falls short of 50 percent in these circumstances, a majority of the voters can be said to have rejected him. Likely a disproportionate number of the undecideds will vote for McCain."

Dick Morris: the man who is never right.

That's because the Senate rules (and "conventions") have migrated over the years so that they don't have to do that most of the time anymore.

It's also worth noting that those rules can be changed again with a majority vote when they convene the new Senate. "Filibuster reform" has been mentioned as something on the agenda - so that we go back to having to actually making it only for extreme circumstances, instead of forcing a 60 vote threshold for everything. (which is NOT how it was intended)

By the way, that's quite a shirt. Dick.

2012-10-31 03:23:15 PM
And for the record, here's his prediction on THIS election:

"But I believe that if you look at the polls in Iowa, they have many too many Democrats and too few Republicans, and proper polls in Iowa would show Romney 1 or 2 points ahead. But frankly, my view, Greta, is that Romney is going to win this election by more than 5 points and that he's going to get north of 320 electoral votes."

2008 was a toss-up since the undecideds were going to break for McCain and Obama was under 50 percent, 2012 is going to be a blowout for Romney because they're tied in all the swing states and "three-fourths to four-fifths" of undecideds will go to him.

He does leave himself an out if his solid gold prediction proves wrong, though.

"Of course, all of this presupposes that the other side doesn't steal it, which is something we need to work on."

And yet, Obama and Romney are statistically tied in national polls. Mr. Silver's predictions are irrelevant here. Sure, Obama has a GOOD CHANCE of winning. My point is: there are THAT MANY Americans who are either not paying attention or are brain dead.

Yeah, Dick Morris, the worst pundit in the world. The one who thought the 2008 election was going to be Hillary v. Condi Rice, that Obama and the UN were going to take away all our guns on July 27, 2012, and who claimed that a government shut down over the 2010 debt ceiling deal "would work for the Republicans this time."

He was a Republican operative back in the early 90s who weaselled his way into the Clintons' inner circle and was the main proponent of the "triangulation" bullshiat that Clinton pushed in the early 90s. He was running Bill's reelection campaign in 1996 until he got caught with a hooker in D.C. and resigned. Since then, he's been on a hate-fueled bender against the Clintons, claiming that Bill beat him up and Hillary was an ice-cold biatch. He also likes to write the kind of conservative books that get bought by the pallet as part of a speaking engagement and then end up on the shelves of Dollar General or a Publisher's Warehouse in the "3 for $5" bin and have incredibly retarded run-on titles of the form "[single word]!: How [an unrelated bunch of bullshiat] Is Causing [a fear-mongering reaction]"

Slight threadjack here, but does anyone know a Richard who is younger than 40 that goes by "Dick"?

I have a good neighbor who is 70 that is a Richard, but goes by Dick, and I cannot bring myself to call him Dick for fear I will say it with the inflection that one uses in an insulting manner.

2012-10-31 04:42:07 PM

xanadian: My point is: there are THAT MANY Americans who are either not paying attention or are brain dead.

I've commented on this before in other threads (so apologies to those for whom it's a repeat). If you look at the things that many Republican voters -- especially intelligent, educated, otherwise-rational Republican supporters -- believe about Obama and the Democratic party in general you would be astonished -- to give one example, that voter registration is needed because the New Black Panthers are frequently intimidating voters. Another example is that they believe Romney's lies about Medicare. And you would likely agree that, in the unlikely event you believed such nonsense, it would be quite sensible to vote against Obama. Scary as this is, it's less disturbing than the alternative, which is that they actually support Romney's policies.

It's actually an impressive testament to the power of cognitive dissonance: these are the people who have progressed from defending their untenable beliefs by denial to insisting that the media are against them, then the fact-checkers, then the polls. Some of them eventually reach a point where the dam breaks, but many of them will go to their graves believing that Obama was the worst president ever and that no terrorist attacks took place on American soil during Bush's administration.
