Hey, look at Alex Gordon winning his second straight Gold Glove!!

2012-10-31 01:55:04 PM
Some people that didn't deserve a Gold Glove got one anyway! That hasn't happened since EVERY OTHER FREAKING TIME THAT THE AWARD HAS BEEN GIVEN OUT

2012-10-31 01:55:17 PM
I notice that you conveniently left out "media bias," which is the actual "East Coast bias" charge. Gold Gloves are voted on by managers and players, not members of the sports media. If there's a bias in that sort of voting, it's bias in favor of veterans or "name" players.

As a West-coaster, it makes perfecty sense that there would be more attention paid to the East coast than the West. More teams in the East. Just sayin'

That said, I do wish someone would tell ESPN that there are other teams that play baseball, besides the Yankees and Red Sox.

Remember in 1999 when Palmeiro won the 1B gold glove despite only playing 30 games at 1B? That's how relevant this award is.

David Wright got robbed.

It's the gold glove. It always sucks.

The gold gloves have always been dumb. Judging defense is not an easy thing to begin with, and the golden gloves are what you get when you have people who don't know how to do it well but believe they know better than aybody else anyways.

The Gold Glove is the Grammy of baseball.

Trout is a very overrated centerfielder. He made a couple spectacular catches that have colored people's view, but he's still got a ways to go w/r/t to learning the position. No reason he can't develop into one of or the best CF in the game, as he's got all the physical ability, but he's not there yet.

Special, special player, though.

Well, there's the geographical definition of "Eastern US," which your maps amply prove, and the ESPN definition of "Eastern US," which is a roughly 15-mile-wide corridor along I-95 between Boston and Philadelphia, occasionally stretching down to Washington during years when the Foreskins aren't totally hapless. The former is merely an effect of the population distribution of the US' population; the latter is what irritates everyone outside of Mega City One.

Boy, it's sure nice to see Brendan Ryan, who had one of - if not THE - highest hits and runs-defended stats in the league last year get the shaft.

The M's may not have been able to hit well this year, but anybody who watched them play knew that Ryan was a frakking wall at shortstop and routinely made plays that other SS's tried to make and failed.

Fangraphs has Mike Trout rated well above Adam Jones, but Baseball Reference has them switched. I am not sure what to make of this.

Michael Bourn shoulda won it right along side Heyward.

I was already here, just didn't feel like posting earlier.

Uh, short version is that out of the major advanced defensive metrics, Jones is only ranked above Trout in TZR (and even then, it's only slightly). TZR essentially takes RF/9 (which is simply how many balls he gets to over 9 innings) and makes a few minor tweaks. And, sure enough, Jones does beat Trout in RF/9.

While it's certainly helpful that Jones gets to a lot of stuff, that can be affected by a lot of factors entirely out of his control. To use an extreme example, CFs behind Derek Lowe will have much lower RF/9 than CFs behind, say, Phil Hughes. At a quick glance it seems like the Orioles & Angels had fairly similar batted ball profiles, but it's something to keep in mind.

Additionally, RF/9 treats a HR rob exactly the same as a lazy fly that he barely has to move for. One of the TZR tweaks attempts to fix this, but it's not even close to perfect.

On the other hand, DRS & UZR, both of which use actual batted ball data, both have Trout as significantly better. So my best guess would be that while they both get to roughly the same amount of balls, Trout's are significantly more difficult.

I'd also guess that errors play a role, but I'd have to look at what Jone's errors actually were to be sure.

If history is any guide, he'll get a "make-up call" next year, like Franklin Gutierrez (shafted in 2009 despite being the best defensive player in baseball; won in 2010).

This is exactly the attitude that makes it harder for me to appreciate baseball. Leave the sentimentality out of it and focus solely on the performance on the field. The kid with the best test grade should get the gold star, not the teacher's pet.

This is a population density map of the United States.

www.mapofusa.net

Notice how the eastern end of that map is very much darker than the western edge?

Awards shows are created and sustained by media companies. Media companies get their money by satisfying / serving an audience. The sports teams from the east coast are always going to be more profitable than the west coast. They have more people nearby. Games in that timezone get more people to watch, which means more ad revenue.

If someone is kicking all kinds of ass for a western team, not as many people are going to see it, and they aren't going to win as many awards.

As much as there is an East Coast bias, Baltimore isn't typically the big media market that ESPN etc fawns over.

Those shortstop picks. I mean, at least they didn't pick Jeter, but still.....yikes.

Oh my those big city types are always fawning over farking Baltimore. When will their unfair bias towards Maryland and it's teams end?! Hey, liberal elite media, there are teams outside of Baltimore, you know.

The whining and gnashing of teeth over bullshiat awards being bullshiat for the 50th consecutive year never ceases to amaze me.

HaywoodJablonski: Newsflash for subby: Mike Trout is just a rookie. He doesn't deserve it yet

Right. Because no rookie has ever won the Gold Glove. Aside from Johnny Bench. And Carlton Fisk. And Ichiro Suzuki.

And the sub wasn't for Trout getting passed over, it was because out of all 9 (10 this year) positions for the AL, you had 3 from the O's and 2 from the Yankees. Over half the AL field from 2 East Coast teams. Plus Helicksen from the Rays. Add in Peavy from the White Sox, and that's 7 out of 10 teams east of the Mississippi.

Same with the National league. Only 2 players from teams considered West Coast: Colorado and San Diego.

Any other glaring omissions here?

I dont really know how players compare defensively other than the guys that are slow, fat and/or old obviously just playing for their bat?

CarGo is a terrible choice; he was probably the worst full time defensive LF in the game this season. Similarly, McCutchen is towards the bottom of the list.

Otherwise, though, I think the rest of the winners were at least close to the best. I'd disagree with Headley, Hardy & JRoll (and Jones, of course), but they're at least defensible.
