LucklessWonder: I'm looking for a decent web host, so who would you recommend? I know GoDaddy has the advertising bdget, but what host gives me the best bang for my bucks?

I've had pretty good luck with Gandi.net -- they're a domain registrar but also do VPS and "Simple Hosting". The VPS hosting is pretty much what you'd expect: Xen virtualization with some extra little options. The "Simple Hosting" is sort of a cool hybrid between shared hosting and a full VPS: unlike shared hosting, you get dedicated resources (e.g. a dedicated Apache instance, a variable number of PHP threads depending on the size of the plan you get, and some other stuff) while like shared hosting they handle all the system upgrades and maintenance for you. Pretty slick. You can scale resources to your Simple Hosting and VPSs as needed, as both services are "virtualized".

They have space at datacenters in Baltimore, Maryland and Paris, France, all with good connectivity.

One nice thing about their domain registration: they offer "private registration" included with the price (other registrars charge extra for it) and they include your first and last name in the registration records, even when made private, so there's no question that you own the domain. They do obfuscate the mailing address, email address, and telephone number so you don't get innundated with spam and junk mail from senders that harvest whois.

/paid customer, uses their Simple Hosting and VPSs for various purposes. Has several domains registered there. Otherwise has no financial interest in the company.

Godaddy is a Domain Registrar primarily, they offer web hosting the same way a supermarket offers impulse-buy items in the checkout lanes.

If your site is important, and you want real professional support I'd humbly suggest LiquidWeb.

you know you are a nerd if you have hate for specific web hosts.

I actually kind of like them. Their customer service is responsive, AND it was super easy to cancel when I no longer need them. Try having that conversation with AT&T some time. It's like breaking up with that chick from Fatal Attraction.
