And it exploded!

If my education in movies has taught me anything, it's that gasoline cars burst into flames all the time in the '70s. Give the technology time.

OK, let's be honest. He's young and rich. And like him or not, I don't think I've heard of him actually being a douche.

So, you are (any age) and rich, and you can get a great looking sports car, and you can make it look like LIQUID METAL and DRIVE IN THE FUTURE.

Why wouldn't you do it?!

I have never, ever had taste that bad. So yeah douche is probably a bit much but why would you do that certainly applies.

I hear this is popular in the Middle East.

Do any other hybrids have these problems?

When I first consider the idea of batteries next to gasoline, I am turned off, but I just assumed they were required to make them safe.

hutchkc: I don't mind jumping on the Fisker blame game as their cars seem to have a lot of issues. However I can't say I'm too shocked a LION battery submerged in sea water caused an issue. It could be they didn't insulate everything and the current caused heat or that the battery cases weren't quite sealed as they should have been. Seeing as how the last couple issues seem to have been with the battery pack that's where I would look first.

Is it even possible to seal a battery so well that it won't leak when submerged in seawater? The power's got to get out somehow.

/no, a submarine doesn't count. You aren't trying to get electricity out of a submarine.

Well you might not be trying to get electricity out of them, but that's just because you're not hardcore.

The plug-in does. I think I read Toyota was moving towards Lithium batteries anyway, since the NMH batteries are old technology. Heavier and less power density.

Yeah I'm wondering when we'll see a movie with a good "electric car explosion".

It'd be easy enough to make something that looks "cool", and it's not like there's a requirement to be technically accurate here. But I think it would just confuse people, people expect cars to make fireballs, end of story.

Look at the bright side... If you are looking at a used one, you dont have to worry about it being a rebuilt salvage title due to flood damage... They obviously dont survive being submerged.

While being submerged is usually pretty much a write-off of almost any car, I have to admit this one has a rather spectacular follow-through.

I count this as one of a very few times that a news article has suggested a more scientifically plausible explanation than the Fark comments. When lithium batteries short out, they overheat explosively. Makes me wonder why they allow cellphones on airplanes at all, really...

This could be the first in history where a hurricane has been reported as saving the lives of many people.

Tom_Slick: Just pointing out lithium will combust in water.

No it won't. It reacts with the water and releases hydrogen, but it doesn't burn and it doesn't produce enough heat to ignite the hydrogen.

This demonstration of alkali metals + water from the Open University is well worth watching.

I believe that water finds it hard to move along copper conductors.

A pal of mine has a Tesla Roadster. It's great, if you want gut wrenching acceleration, a 50mph avergae speed on long trips, cramped cabin, horribly uncomfortable ride and a battery pack that costs $50,000 and lasts five year. And all for only twice the cost of a nice Porsche!

But one of the pictures shows other Karmas that are completely intact. As twfeline pointed out, this was exacerbated by parking them all close together. When one went it took the others with them.

Blinding the driers around my expensive car would be pretty high on my list of "why this is a bad idea." Close would be "its kinda ugly."

On the flip side, it makes it really hard for photographers to not get themselves in the shot, which might almost be worth it.
