The shiat-tastic and pointless UI aside, I find myself with the same question I had about Vista: why?

Even ignoring the fact you seem to think I spend my time giving my computer screen digital sexual pleasure and have created a UI on this basis, I see no reason to adopt. Windows 7 support will overlap with the majority of Windows 8's useful life, Windows 7 is more than adequate, and Windows 9, which will likely be little more than a fix to make Windows 8 do the things it was supposed to in the first place, will be released in the same time period.

What this tells me is that the only way for people to write apps for the platform is to either pay developers or organize development events like this one in third world countries.

It runs exactly the same as Windows 7. Its stable and fast. But Windows 8 adds pretty graphics that get in the way of actually doing work.

Or, you know, we could stick to the point. What does Windows 8 give me? If you're going to ask me to buy a new OS from you, I'd kind of like to know what I'm getting for my money. As of yet, just like with Vista's initial release, I'm not seeing the benefit, even ignoring the shiatty UI.

And, no, putting all my stuff on Microsoft's cloud service and loading up my desktop with SSDs so it boots quickly isn't going to cut it. The minute it takes me to get into Windows 7 isn't a huge burden on me worthy of the $70 upgrade cost.

Yea, I don't really get why people say this every Windows release. I haven't had significant stability or performance issues since moving to XP. Yet, every release since, I'm assured by other people that this new one is so much more stable and quick than XP/Vista/7!

I don't know what these people do to their machines, but stability kinda stopped being a selling point for me after XP and just kind of became "expected".

It will be 301 soon, as I'm writing an app for it. And I'm only doing so because I have to, because some genius decided to use Windows RT for something he shouldn't. Hopefully I can stop supporting it when Pro comes out.

No, I didn't, I said that 9 would "likely" be a fix to make things operate like they should have in 8. Just like 7 was more like Vista Done Right than its own operating system.

Yea, I could just wait for the first service pack which essentially does the same thing, but, again, why would I waste my money on 8 when 7 works fine and the next version will be out before 7's support period is up? If you're going to ask for my money for a new OS, tell me what makes it worth it.

Hell, if they'd continue to support XP and offer the new Direct X versions on it I'd be happy to just use that for my personal machine. Works better than fine. They still haven't convinced me 7 was worthwhile, now they want me to fork out for 8?

I'm not sure the person is a paid shill. Windows 8 has run a lot smoother on some of our tests. The problem is the godforsaken interface. There's no way I'm pushing that to our employees.

Windows 8 looks liek a piece of shiat, they really should just make a Windows Mobile OS if that's what they want to do, instead of trying to turn laptops and desktops into iPads. I'll wait for Windows Insurrection to not look like a piece of shiat, thank you very much.

I've performed those tests. XP is significantly slower. Not sure what you're talking about on this one. Our tests went like this (slowest to fastest):

XP
Vista (non-SP)
(huge speed different here)
Vista (SPs installed)
7 (SPs installed)
8 (tiny improvement, does not override other concerns)

As with anything, obviously, speed is not often the primary consideration. Then again, I remember the days when people had to do things like wait for the start button to pop up on slow machines. :D

I've been using it. I figure it's coming sooner or later and someone in my office should know how it works...

I was sort of expecting horrible but frankly, it's fine. Tiles aren't really my cup of tea and I was dreading the setup but an hour and a half after opening my new laptop I had office and qb pro installed and registered, crapware uninstalled, my old vpn and remote desktop set up aaaaaaaand... despite never trying it or reading any tutorials it all went off without a hitch. Things are in different places. I sort of miss the old desktop (which is still there, you just have to deal with tiles to get to it) but all in all it's quick and it works fine. My prediction: people who actually spend an hour with it will get over it quickly. It seems unfamiliar at first but at the end of the day it's not like it's missing any functionality we had in 7.

Hah. It's so very, very, true. I have people who still can't get a grasp on Windows 7, despite the fact they've been on it for a very, very long time. It was "too different" from XP. I can't imagine switching them to this interface. Their heads may actually explode, and I can't ask my network admins to clean up brains.

That said, this is not the worst disaster to befall computer land: Back when I helped out more with help desk type things, my absolute highest call volume ever was when Oprah had recommended some coupon printer program on her show to get something free (I don't remember the details). People who otherwise knew better all started apologetically calling me because they either "couldn't get their printer program to work" or because "they needed help ASAP!" I eventually had to send a corporate-wide e-mail saying, "No matter what Oprah says, the work computers are not for printing free coupons. Those of you without administrative rights will not get them to print free items. Please stop calling and/or logging help desk cases."

Once again, there's nothing wrong with Windows 8. It's FINE. It works FINE. Microsoft made a lot of small performance improvements that add up to something really nice, but they added Metro as well and Metro isn't that great.

On the other hand, from being a regular Windows 8 user for a few months I can tell you that I barely even see Metro. I might have a reason to flip back to it once a day. If it really bugged me, I'd install "Classic Start" and never worry about it again, but since I barely see it, it's not even worth messing around to change anything.

my biggest question: when not in a touch environment, just with a KBPD, why in the world do they not have things like the Charms, App Switcher and home button on screen all the time? maybe a top-or-bottom mounted fixed bar like in Mac OS X? Having to throw my cursor to the corner to unhide them, or to change apps or to go to the home screen is just really annoying. It works much nicer in a touch environment, but in KBPD? No way.
