I guess the author never tried to tee off with a gator sunning itself 30 feet away on the left side of the fairway.

/glad I sliced that one.

scary? if golf causes you fear then you need to get a life.

If the point of golf is to get mad at yourself I would say those holes are well designed.

Number 15 on the championship course at Bryan Park in Greensboro from the back tees - 235 yard par 3, 220 of which is water carry. With more water behind. Only par 3 I ever used a 3 wood on (it's usually into the wind too).

I think this righter might have nervous and scared confused. Not quite the same thing.

List of fail.

Scariest golf shot is when you're' on a course where large, expensive homes line the course on both sides of the fairway. Even worse, the hole is right off of a busy road in the burbs.

Slice-o-matic usually comes out to destroy someones backyard bbq or window.

I used to live out in the sticks, and to get to my house you had to go around this big looping road around a golf course. I was driving along one day behind this old cream colored Cadillac around that road and this golf ball comes flying across the road and turns his windshield into a cracked mess. He and I were the only guys on that road for miles so you know some poor guy on the hole next to the road just sliced one and took out the windshield on the only car to drive by that road for an hour.

What about when the ball lands on this guy's foot? That sounds like a scary shot to me

That's not scary, that's called a challenge!

Pretty good list. Nothing from Beth Page? The Blue Monster? Oakmont's church pews?

Tee shot at the 272-yard, par-3 3rd hole at Mauna Kea -- Kohala Coast, Hawaii... 272 yards of pure ocean carry

If by "scary" they mean stupid, then yeah, that's pretty scary.

I'll tell you what I told that lady 3 weeks ago. This is why you have insurance and if you're going to get pissy, you should reconsider living on a golf course.

So "scary" is defined as a shot where, unless you hit it perfectly, you're going to lose your ball and have to take a stroke. If losing a $2 golf ball causes you "fear", you're got bigger trouble than a shot. Personally I think the "scariest" shot in golf is always the first drive of the day - flub that and everyone on the course thinks you're a jackass. I'd call that St. Andrews tee the worst in the list.

Scariest shots in golf

a) The flip wedge in to a piece of cake par 4 after you just smoked a 320yd drive. Dear god, don't screw up the birdie chance
2) Fairway bunker shot where you need a 6 iron to get to the green, but you need an 8 iron to clear the front lip
D) The first drive of the day when there are a few dozen people watching and most of them expect you to pipe it down the middle

Honorable mention: The six footer for par on 16 when you realize that 3 more pars gets you the victory.

Rent Party: Fark Sawgrass. Island and island-like greens are a gimmick.

That whole course is a joke. Yes, really. No better than a fair to middling muni anywhere else in te world.

That Sawgrass hole has been a hell of a lot worse since the redesign.

/the fiery sea of hands is technically a water hazard
//the ballhawks are an outside agency
///man, golf has rules for everything

Google Earth says the carry is only 185 yds.

The trick to that is just not think about it and swing away, once you start thinking too much it leads to fark ups, basically, you know what to do so just do it and let it rip...

Not sure where you're measuring from since I can't even see the back tees on google earth. But I assure you it was 290 yards into 40mph winds from the giant wind machine they installed while rabid squirrels and jurassic mega-toothed ducks attacked any exposed skin. But the worst was the local rule requiring groin clamps...

Pete Dye is a jackass.

I've hated every course of his I've ever played. Royal Hawaiian is a classic example of his jackassery... the Par 5 13th is 400 yards from the TIPS and is STILL a 3 shot hole because you hafta hit a farking 9i or PW off the tee, WTF?

Scariest shots in Winter Golf:

a) The first drive - which is going to determine if you have bought enough of those little black balls that cost three times as much.
b) The test swing at the pawn shop (Dear GOD you don't use good clubs for Winter Golf... against the rules or something...) which always has the golf clubs next to the extremely expensive electronics.
c) There you are, sitting on the 18th green, and as you look out over the valley you are about to claim, you realize... it's gotta be three feet deep out there! I am SO hosed! Then, like a proper gentlemen, you prepare to sacrifice one of those little black balls (which cost three times as much) to the snow gods. You are always going to pull it or slice it. No exceptions.
d) Coming up to the elevated tee, slipping on your feet, falling on your ass and sliding back down the hill, club in hand. Charlie Brown, Duffer.
e) The one that winds up flying directly for the parking lot and all you can do make grabby hands at it as the air passing through your throat sounds like you've just been smashed on the tow with a sledgehammer. Kishhh... incoherent profanity for five minutes.
f) When it's snowing, stopping, snowing and knowing the local ice arena is less slick than the fairways.

finally: The-Seve: "It's barely in the parking lot. I'm going to use The-Seve" Or: "Totally not gonna break anyone's windows". KISH!
"Oh fark oh fark oh fark oh fark oh fark oh fark oh fark oh fark...."

TA-DA! IT'S YOUR CAR!

While I like Lee T. A friend of mine got to know him pretty well as he married a girl from his town in CT. He's played with and knows him from the country club. He describes Lee as a "jackass".
