gaffe /gaf/

Noun: An unintentional act or remark causing embarrassment to its originator; a blunder: "an unforgivable social gaffe".

Not one of those remarks was unintentional.

...and now that it's weeks away from taking effect, Republicans are blaming its defense cuts on Obama.

Twas ever the plan.

Farking things up and then trying to blame it on Obama has been their Plan A, B and C since 2008.

I agree with the article's writer's assertion that Mitt's now infamous "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt" statement and calls to privatize relief agencies in the wake of Sandy are not helping him in key swing states and that his blather about sequestration is just that, nonsensical derp.

Nice to see Mitt's Jeep lie is hurting him too.

He really is a terrible candidate by almost every metric.

That noted Mitt does have nice hair, will give him that.

The difference is that a privately funded bankruptcy (Romney's plan) would not have worked because there were no private funds to spend. Private banks weren't giving out money, which would have made the whole thing an unsecured bankruptcy resulting in total liquidation of GM assets.

The publicly funded bankruptcy (the auto-bailout) provided taxpayer funds the same way a bank or board of trustees would have. This resulted in a secured bankruptcy, allowing GM to pay back the funds and not have to liquidate all assets and layoff their entire workforce.

The consummate businessman that Romney is supposed to be suggesting that private banks should be funding the bankruptcy during the worst economic downturn since 1929 looks ridiculous. Especially when bad lending practices led to that downturn.

Say for example the Obama administration was completely at fault for the Libya attack and was complicit in some cover up because it is an election year (or to save face, or whatever reason). What difference would that make for you? Quite frankly, even if such an atrocity happened every day of the year, that would still be less Americans killed than die from crimes within the US that the Obama administration can't do much about. Libya seems like a touch stone for the Republicans, but there isn't talk about how there were more embassy attacks during each of W's terms than during Obamas. Hell, W had a shoe thrown at him that his security detail couldn't stop.

Romney's LDGB argument was in short: If the Big 3 go bankrupt they can disband the unions and lower labor costs (by firing people, closing inefficient plants, and pay current workers less) so that they can compete better with foreign automakers. Assuming sales didn't continue to plummet (which they likely would have done because a large chunk of sales are the "Buy American" people), it could likely increase the bottom line of the manufacturers. The upper tier of the corporate structure would remain sound while the people who actually build the products they sell would suffer.

They didn't know which Dem was going to be elected in 2008 and it made no difference to their Plan for a New American Century. The build up to war, the war(s) and the economic collapse timed to fall during the 2009-12 Presidential term all went basically according to plan. With Romney installed as the next puppet in chief they can continue to usher in the America they envisioned way back then.

Extremely sad, but entirely true. Even the most ardent supporter of Romney knows he lies more often than he breathe. Yet, the only reason why they will vote for him is their hatred of Obama (as you said).

I think this is why I will enjoy nov 7th so much. This is possibly the sweetest revenge I could get for 2004. I think my hatred for Bush (for valid reasons) were somewhat half of their hatred of Obama (for completely made up faux news propaganda reasons).

I was heartbreaking to see Bush win in 2004. Now, their feeling is going to twice as worse.

Can we talk about Romney's administration while he was governor allowing the company responsible for the meningitis deaths to violate regulations because it would have hurt their business if they were enforced?

Obviously Romney isn't directly responsible for anyone who has died from meningitis, but it is an interesting topic on the role of government in regulating businesses and the implications of the laissez faire attitude often seen in Republican administrations.

Or is that not allowed either?

The truth about Libya? Like the way the Mitt Romney smirked about American deaths? Like the way the CIA investigation proved the Republicans wrong? Like the Condoleeza Rice told the Republicans to knock it off? Yeah, the press should talk about that more.

And, your right, the press shouldn't be talking about Mitt's Bankruptcy plan as much as they should be talking about the way Mitt wanted to do it with private funding which would have led to liquidation, off-shoring, and even even more job losses at a time when America could not afford it. Kind of like Mitt's plans to privatize FEMA. So, we both agree that the press should be talking about that stuff.

You are wrong. Romney never said there would be zero effort or risk from government in a managed bankruptcy. Romney consistently held for government backed loans and bonds. What he was not for is simply paying for GM stock or bailouts of pensions like Obama pushed for. Right now the US is 25 billion in the hole, the large majority of that shortfall is attributed to gains illegally given to the unions during the GM bankruptcy. Preferential treatment was the main outcome of the Obama bankruptcy. Delphi provides the stark example; unions receive full pension recovery while non union employees got nothing. Obama's managed bankruptcy was an illegal usurpation of the bankruptcy process merely to shift money to unions, nothing more. Studies have already shown this. Romney never once stated the government would do nothing; tax preferential loans or guaranteed loans could have restored investor confidence. Nobody wants GM stock now, it's behind the unions in creditor redemption now. Obama made it more toxic.

Are you really this dumb, or pretend to be? If you are pretending, you are doing a really good job. Are you trying to tell that there is no difference between chapter 7 and chapter 11?

In Romney's plan, everyone, including the republicans related to the auto industry agree, there would have been no GM and Chrysler (and therefore many supplier and so Ford - totaling about 1M jobs). He was against using gov money to secure their bankruptcy. And there was no private fund available to do that. Romney either was so out of touch that he did not realize that, or he has some grudge against american jobs and wanted to ship them to china on purpose to pick this position, you pick which one it is.

Simply put, it was the difference between saving Midwest vs destroying it. Romney ended up on the wrong side of the history, and "the party of personal responsibility" for once should accept that. Instead, he is spewing lie about how this plan was same as Obama's, how Chrysler was shipping Ohio jobs to China, how GM used that money to send job to China. Wow, just wow!
