Ricardo Klement: eikni: So, guess I need to have the talk with my oldest son about how to go after the girls with Galaxy S3s and Iphone 5s, and to stay the F away from any girl who uses a Windows phone.

Blackberry?

She is the popular girl that moved away and all that is left are memories and year book photos.

//There would be more photos if she had a digital camera back then.

Dumski: So are they using iPhones, or Galaxies to get off? I know that they both have vibrate functions, but what do the guys do with them??

Why don't the researchers answer that one?

jedihirsch: Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: What teen doesn't have a smartphone? The Amish?

Well I'm 23 and still don't use a smartphone
1)don't like big devices in my pocket
2)My flip phone has a 3.2mp camera, plays music with a 16gb microsd, sends e-mails, texts, gets internet and has a twitter and facebook app, also has for $10 extra a month a nav system
3) Use very little data, basically just e-mail and basic news so don't need much more
4) as a grad student the hundreds I save a year are worth it for now

Also I have a friend who is 19 and is an engineering student who doesn't have a smartphone to save money too, and she says she's not the only practical engineering student.

Lets face it, Smartphones for most people are just big fancy toys for games and movies that sometimes are used for calls, and costs hundreds of dollars (at least) extra a month on a bill. (OK, for business many people need it, but find me one teen who actually needs it beyond the fancy expensive toy reason)

I have a Galaxy Nexus, and an unlimited data plan with text and unlimited talk (through google voice) is $30. That is cheaper than a lot of my friends who thought the same way.

I know you're probably exaggerating, but you should probably take a look at the current cost of plans for smartphones. I had an old flip phone that I had been using for years witha simple plan, thinking I was good locking in at a low price. When I recently took a look at some of the plans for smartphones, I found I could get a lot more (unlimited data, long distance, texting, voicemail, etc.) for a bit less every month.

But yeah, my smartphone took over the role of my mp3 player and DS in addition to my phone (which I do use as a phone often). So it's more for entertainment than communication.

She lost it, I found it. I had bigger plans but her mom never answered my call, I was going to go downtown to a sleazy bar and leave it with the barkeep after making contact with her and telling her where I "found" it.

Tenatra: CSB...

This one time I was at walmart and found a cell phone sitting on a bench in the back of the store. A few minutes later I heard 3 girls come back and one was getting all panicky because she lost her phone. When I heard one of them a couple aisles away from me say she was going to call the phone I pulled out the battery and was amused by the distress that it caused them. As I was wandering around the store the 3 girls passed me multiple times looking high and low for the phone. (they couldn't have been older than middle school). When I looked at the phone she had a bunch of photos with her and a cross and other religious crap but also had a bunch of sext mesages and other sex shiat on there (no not her or other jailbat, nothing incriminating)

/That was the only time I've decided not to return something, to crush the heart of a teenage girl for losing her cell phone
//I bet she went home and wrote about it in her diary

Did you fap to that badass in the mirror when you got home?

If one doesn't see the connection between teens having smartphones and them having more sex at younger ages, one must really give their head a shake. Sex has become substantially easier for adults with the introduction of smartphones, so why would one think it's any different for younger ones? It's unfortunately (for teens) very true.

I always wondered why such potentially [behaviorally] hazardous items were considered suitable for young kids, there used to be a thing called 'adults only' and some things were considered unsuitable for children. Now, kids can get their hands on just about anything and there is almost no line between childhood and adulthood now. Sorta sad, really.

Really? What company do you use (oh and all phones have the voicemail, etc)
with Verizon:
700 min talk with text and data Pay-as-you-go = $10 a month
Unlimited Talk and text and 300mb data = $40 a month
Unlimited Talk and text and 1gb data = $50 a month
Unlimited Talk and text and 4bg data (or six netlix videos)= $70
Unlimited Talk and text and and 6gb data (the average adult uses per month with a plan) =$80 a month

So for just calling it's $70 less a month than the average data user and for me it's $40 less (not including the phone fee is higher for smartphones to add to a plan. So in the end, I am hundreds of dollars ahead. and I still have enough data to check news every so often and send e-mails. and my flip phone is an mp3 player and has decent camera. This is why I am able to save money for real things like edible food and boarding while being in grad school

jedihirsch: 6gb data (the average adult uses per month with a plan)

I've got a 2GB plan at $30/month (plus voice), don't take any care at all to watch my mobile data usage, and never get anywhere near the limit (usually it's 2-400MB/month). If I do any email, Facebook, app updates, etc. at work it uses mobile data (the non-802.1x wifi has an annoying proxy).

Though I don't stream music or videos, which is probably where most usage comes from. And I appreciate that extra $30/month isn't trivial for everyone. (I resisted on those grounds for some time, but finally gave in a couple years ago).

I have a smartphone that was furnished by my company for work purposes it does a good job of keeping me connected to work and able to deal with situations that don't require me to fire up my laptop and VPN after searching high and low for a wi-fi hotspot.

Seriously NOT having a smartphone in my area would be a huge issue for me. i need access to data at random time and wi-fi hotspots are about as common as reasonable and intelligent posts in the politics tab.

Wait- what?

I have to drive hours to find a place that doesn't have a hotspot. Did you just accidentally compliment the posters on the politics tab???

ZipSplat: I bet your parents being able to afford a smart phone is also highly correlated with their ability to buy you a car.

fark, there are probably all kinds of correlations in your favor just from the fact that your parents have money.

Yup. I note the absence of financial status in their controls. I think this is just another piece of junk research.

Not everyone lives where you live, and different places have different infrastructure. That's why I I mentioned how uncommon wi-fi hotspots are in my area.

I have the $40 a month plan and all I use the data for is checking e-mail and news on mobile web. Have yet to reach a month's limit. And since my dumbphone has an mp3 player I have my music. If I am traveling like on a plane or for a long distance then a bring my mp3 player with the large screen, so I use it as necessary, And I pay hundreds less a year than most of my fellow students and I somehow survive. I don't care if other people want to waste their money on fancy toys (unless you need it for business, though my mom is a lawyer and uses a qwerty phone with no data, and my dad is a Systems Database Programmer and uses a flip phone and only uses data for e-mail, and both of them are fine with it and feel no need to upgrade) Just I am not wasting money on something I don't need when I am on a tight budget
