BUT LUCAS WAS THE CHOSEN ONE!

This article could have been one sentence:

"George Lucas won't be around to fark shiat up anymore."

I must be one of the few SW fans that didn't greet this news with a kneejerk "ZOMG RUINING MY CHILDHOOD EVEN MOAR!" This could end up being extremely awesome.

It has high potential. One of the requirements in making sure Lucas has nothing to do with Episodes 7-9 has been met. And I still want the Thrawn books.

The problem with that is the original cast is way too old to play their roles now.

2012-10-30 10:41:30 PM
Also, this article fails to mention that this is a chance to go back and correct one of the of the original trilogy's biggest goofs and cast Christopher Walken as Han Solo.

poonesfarm: Christopher Walken as Han Solo.

Oh man I can actually hear Walken doing the conversation with Greedo.

"Yes, Greedo; as a matter of fact, I was just going to see your boss. Tell Jabba that I've got his money."

Tell me you can't hear Walken saying that.

The OC could be part of some adventure involving Han and Leia's kids. I haven't read all of the books and stuff, but I think this has been covered a bit in them. The continuity would be nice.

Ewan McGregor can still do Obi Wan for a long time, if you wanted to retcon him off of Tattoine for some missions against the newly founded empire. He was really the thread that carried through episodes 1-3.

You get that far out and the books get depressing fast. The whole invasion is what made me stop reading them in the first place and the kids aren't that old yet in those books. From what I've seen elsewhere apparently Anakin turns into his namesake.

TFA argues that the series isn't about a central character.

Really? Did they miss the part where Anakin / Darth Vader was the central tragic figure who ultimately finds redemption through 6 movies?

2012-10-30 11:17:12 PM
Anakin's character is fine. Jaina and Jacen's characters kinda goes off the rails.

I'm still not convinced this is a good idea. If you told me yesterday there was going to be an Episode 7, I would have laughed and pushed you down a flight of stairs.

2012-10-30 11:18:09 PM
They'll have to retconn Lucas' retconning:

"We once thought it was midichlorians, but that was found to be false"

"It turned out Anakin was insane from an early age. His Father was this dude. No, he never built droids."

"Earlier tech just looked more advanced"

"Dark Lords really don't die that quickly or easily"

"All Gungans were killed in the great biological war"

"No, the movies were not just for kids."

Things that could be incredibly awesome:

1) Disney could go back and re-release Episodes 1/2/3 and completely re-write them to make them not suck. And we could all agree to burn the originals and erase it from mankind forever. MIDICHLORIANS COULD BE ERASED FROM THE HISTORY BOOKS.
2) Disney could re-release the original episodes 4/5/6 without the stupid added-on effects, and Greedo shooting first.

Things that could be disastrous:

1) Time travel. Holy Mother of God, how science fiction writers and marketing teams love time travel. This is one thing that Lucas avoided, and for that, I thank him.
2) Cross-overs with other science fiction universes. Death threats will be placed on people that come up with the idea of mixing Star Wars with Tron or The Black Hole.

Psst - Disney. If you want to make that $4B back in one fell sweep, just rerelease Episode II, but reshoot all of Natalie Portman's scenes sans clothes.

Agreed, and while they're at it, just dub Anakin over with Jackie Gleason's voice, for teh lulz.

I can't fathom why he would need an extra 4 billion, when he already is worth more than 3 billion, unless he plans to give it all away...

I'm generally happy with this news. Yes, Lucas needs to step aside, it's 3 films past due.

But, no Thrawn novels or EU. Even the Thrawn novels as movies wouldn't be fair for the actors that would be cast to play Han, Luke, Leia, and Lando. It would be like Brandon Routh in 'Superman Returns' all over again.

They need to do 6 more movies for balance. The first 6 had its entire arc and it's over. If there is something very latent in the first series that can be carried over to the next 6, that's the way to go just so there is a connector. But you can't base the next 6 stories off of human characters whose actors are too old to play the parts or are f*cking dead.

Or not do it at all. Which they won't.

I think this will be excellent for the franchise. I'm excited about the possibilities here. But I've always liked Disney.

What surprises me though is I've yet to hear anyone remark on how awesome the next iteration of Kingdom Hearts is going to be though. Mickey Mouse with a motherfarking lightsaber, yo.

Just have R2 and 3PO as the tie-in storytellers like they're supposed to be.

I think the Rouge Squadron book series by Michael A. Stackpole would translate well into a series.

It deals with the fact that the war against the Empire wasn't really over after the Emperor's death, and the whole story line with Ysanne Isard and re-establishment of the Jedi were some of my favorite books as a younger teen.

Since they won't be boxed in like the new trilogy was then the odds are it could be a halfway decent film because they'll have few limitation, especially if they focus on things that take place after ROTJ.

Yes, I still own my old paperback copies. I always felt they would be a great starting point for a new trilogy. You could make the first two books into the first movie, the next two into the 2nd, and make "I, Jedi" into the third.

By the time "I, Jedi" comes around Luke is older and Mark Hamil could believably play him again.

i never got into the many books written by god knows who, but did lucas own the rights to those?

do you think disney is going to buy lucas out and then make movies based on books they have no rights to?

a serious question?
