Marine1: wont_eat_bugs: It's just not Star Wars without John Williams and the LSO. Who's going to fill those shoes on the music front? You've got to admit the theme is iconic, almost as much as the (real) films themselves. Hans Zimmer maybe? Just not James Horner.

We're gonna have to do the rest of it with Danny Elfman.

/and I have fulfilled my Family Guy reference quota for the year

If you say Danny Elfman's name three times you get Tim Burton as a director.

Yeah, he's not a troll, he just has either incredibly bad taste or a hole in his brain.

THIS:

DrunkenBob: As someone who never liked Star Wars and grew to loathe it based on the vocal fanboys that holds it up as Science Fiction at its best, I don't mind who is in control as long as the franchise is so tarnished that the masses deny it ever existed.

is trolling.

All this means is that Star Wars is now in the hands of the copyright/trademark dynasty that ensures that the franchise will never, EVER enter the public domain where it can actually belong to the fans who loved it. There will never be a non-sucky RPG version at conventions because Canon-Sith will ensure that anything labeled Star Wars must meet their criterion of "1) must not in any way conflict, contradict, or add anything of value to the existing canon, and 2) Star Wars in all forms is monetized for its masters from now until the Disney Corporation ceases to exist (an event on the highly unlikely side of "any time soon)." This is only a huge positive, right?

Not really sure how I feel about this yet....trying not to get my hopes up and trying not to be all negative about what could happen. I do think if they are going to replace luke, leia, han, etc...they need to do a reboot....not really hoping for one though.....I would like to see some of the EU material....

2012-10-30 07:47:19 PM

Unimpressed Man: Seriously, Hugo Weaving Benedict Cumberbatch as Thrawn, Stephen Lang as Pellaeon, use updated CGI to include the original cast members for Luke, Han, and Leia. The Noghri will be badass with current CGI techniques. Tell me this doesn't sound like a doable thing.

Had to make a slight correction to your cast list.

The best things I've seen out of Star Wars were at Disney World. My son has R2D2 ears.

Clint Bajakian did fantastic LucasArts video games scores that seamlessly adapted John Williams and added solid original themes, both Star Wars and Indiana Jones. He's only done video games though so I don't know if he can break into film.

Considering that LucasArts appropriated Thrawn for the TIE Fighter Expansion Pack storyline, I'd say there's at least even odds that's where the official canon leads.

Disney is fairly active in the video game scene, I wonder if this increases the odds of a TIE Fighter remake.

prolly mentioned, but wouldn't be the best chance at getting a blu-ray release of the original trilogy before special edition nonsense?

Handsome B. Wonderful: Timothy Zahn is a hack writer who relies heavily on coincidences to solve his plotting, and the Thrawn books were only awesome when you were 13.

You know... I really loved those books, but I was about 13 when I read them, so it's hard to argue with you.

craxyd: The Fett: Only good can come from this. Star Wars resuced from the diseased hand that Lucas has become.

Except for the ridiculously huge stick Disney has up its ass about "copyright infringement"... All of us costumers can pretty much kiss our respective organizations like The Dark Empire, the 501st & the Mandalorian Mercs goodbye

Would this be the same 501st (and Rebel Legion) who participate in Star Wars Weekends at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Orlando every year?

NkThrasher: Darth_Lukecash: No he doesn't He sucks. Seriously.. Inventing a creature the at blocks the Force? The thing that supposedly flows through all life forms?

Creating a counter to an existing universe power? You mean one of the basic elements of a story based around a power struggle?

Come now, you're basically objecting to storytelling. If he created a Jedi capable of penetrating the creatures block, then it's getting silly. Having checks and balances on the powers available to your characters isn't a problem though.

More like when you play D & D and your DM suddenly makes all the monsters impervious to magic.

Dumbass, I did all that stuff too. Real Tom Sawyer stuff, my childhood. But you know what? I grew up in an era with cinemas and TV shows and I loved those too.

I love Star Wars. Can't argue a bit.
Every big budget, happy meal tie-in, video game crossover piece of crap made is a merchandising/licensing spin-off of Star Wars. Lucas planning to make money off the licenses was as smart as Bill Gates realizing that the money was in software.
Guess that's why they're worth gajillions.

Yeah, Copyright is, what, life +70, maybe more? So even with Lucas owning the franchise, it hadn't even hit the post-death countdown yet, and probably wouldn't have for a good many years yet.

Unless someone finds the fountain of youth or an immortality pill, none of us would ever have seen the day Star Wars hits Public Domain, no matter how much you want to wish you would.

This makes total sense to me. My 8 year old doesn't have a clue who Mickey, goofy, pluto the princesses etc are. But can name every Muppet (newly aquired by Disney) every Star Wars character, and pretty much every Pixar character. This move gives them more access to another generation of youth. Plus Lucas gets to walk away with another huge paycheque.

2012-10-30 08:23:59 PM
If the Disney/Lucasfilm deal actually turns over control of the SW franchise to people other than George Lucas and his minions, there could be hope for it yet. If he still has creative control, then it's just gonna be the same shiat with different owners. The only reason the original trilogy is remembered so fondly compared to the prequels (or anything else for that matter) is that there were a lot of other creative hands involved saving the story from complete disaster. The prequels? No such luck there.

As far as "Episode 7" is concerned.....ugh, please God, let it not involve any of the established characters. Let's face it: considering the advanced ages of the actors that played Luke, Han, Leia, et. al., the Thrawn Trilogy is pretty much off the table unless it's done Pixar-style (which fans will biatch about) or if different actors play the roles (which fans will REALLY biatch about). Their best move at this point would be to start a whole new storyline with new characters and have it all set well after the original trilogy. Anything else will just be a shambles.

And, as if the Star Wars franchise hasn't been made kid-friendly enough....yikes. We'll be lucky if we ever see a more mature Star Wars story. And by "mature" I don't necessarily mean sex and excessive violence; I just mean Star Wars that isn't fully marketed and geared to satisfy kids alone.

From a joke I remember reading the first time at the dawn of the internet (not because it didn't exist before, but because I was only 13 then): what happens when you have a battle between stormtroopers, who can't hit the broad side of a planet, and redshirts, who are contractually obligated to die anytime a weapon is fired?

I dunno, but I'd watch it.
