bblustein: After how they royally screwed Marvel with their deal, the gloom and doom in this thread is warranted completely!

Oh wait, they made a series of really good, non-Disney-feeling Marvel movies culminating in a masterpiece Averngers movie.

So cry about this if you want, I, for one, am excited. I want more Star Wars, and I think Disney is less likely to go Jar-Jar Binks then Lucas himself is these days.

THIS. If Disney gives the Star Wars franchise the Marvel treatment, then we're back in business.

This has the potential for some good things.

Normally, I'd say that this type of monopoly is bad for the industry, but, SW has been so abused by Lucas with the prequels that new owners could only improve the product.

Probably what I'd do first is remake the original series shot for shot using Pixar's talents. Then start an animated sequel using the original voices.

Create a weekly Boba Fett series for TV and Add Leia to the official "Disney Princess" line.

2 questions:

2. Is ILM part of the purchase?

UNC_Samurai: Good, I'm still in time to tell the self-righteous hipsters who think it's cool to hate the Thrawn Trilogy and the Expanded Universe because it doesn't live up to their supposed standards.

I enjoyed reading them when I was 13-16, and I enjoyed re-reading them over the last couple of years. They're great stories, and often have better characters than the ones Lucas wrote for the movies. Cry about the mad Jedi master close with an extra vowel in his name, C'Baoth was far better than Jar-Jar, Watto, the Nemoidians, or General Greivous.

I was cool with Zahn until he made Mara Jade and Luke get together. I saw Luke as more of a warrior monk/bachelor for life, and Mara as a sort of drinking buddy.

Handsome B. Wonderful: Timothy Zahn is a hack writer who relies heavily on coincidences to solve his plotting, and the Thrawn books were only awesome when you were 13.

2/10

One for noting that Zahn relies on coincidences (though that happens in every other movie every screened, possibly more) and one for claiming that the books were only good when I was 13 (the actual age at which I read them).

You lose 8 points for being wrong, and neglecting that the Zahn audience has expanded since he originally wrote the books.

I'd watch the shiat out of that!

Yep.

...but isn't the Empire only scary because it is massive and unstoppable? A few scattered remnants would not be a credible enemy -- like comparing the real Nazis with a few "Illinois Nazis".

It makes sense, though.

Large sections of the galaxy watched the Republic erode and finally crumble over the course of a century. The Empire came along and kept the space-lanes free of pirates, got the interstellar corporations in line to where they weren't blockading planets, and brought peace to the galaxy. They didn't know anything about the Sith, and the Rebels were just causing trouble anyway. Even if the Emperor is gone, the oversector still runs pretty well with the Grand Moff, and this "New Republic" doesn't seem to be any better than the old one.

Just because it's a space opera doesn't mean it can't have a little depth and subtlety in its fluff.

It's the possibility for a live action TV show on ABC that is making me the most excited here... As goofy as the series is, I've been watching Once Upon a Time on Netflix and am really enjoying it. Now, it's a silly show for girls, but they're integrating all the Disney fairy tale properties and then really twisting it up another way. Hell they made Belle fall in love with Rumplestiltskin for heaven's sake (it was awesome!). It's really awesome what they're doing with it and I think that if they can find a way to do something similar with Star Wars, I will happily give Disney my first-born.

Okay, I'm going to own up about going way off the nerd deep end, but yes, you were trolling. You included no content and made a value judgment with nothing to back it up.

There is not another "Superweapon" to destroy, but a brilliant tactical and strategic genius who has a masterful command of politics and psychology, an (almost) undetectable intelligence source, an outdated yet terribly effective technology assumed to be forgotten and destroyed, as well as a natural defense against the Jedi. He coordinates extremely successful attacks against the New Republic while attempting to contain and control a mad dark Jedi and search for a not-so-mythical lost fleet which may tip the balance in his favor. Get off your high horse and smoke this shiat, will you?!

Walt_Jizzney: Episode 7

Let's just assume this isn't bogus: can we please just ignore all this EU, novelization crap and do something new?

Dear God no,

If they ignore the EU, I ignore the new films (and whatever merchandise feces Disney excretes, I have very low trust and respect for the Army of the Mouse)

The EU is why I'm more than a casual fan of Star Wars, why I paid attention to it after I was 14 or 15. The idea that Star Wars was more than just 3 (at the time) movies, it was this elaborate, coherent saga stretching for thousands of years.

Yeah, a few EU books were stinkers (Children of the Jedi and The Crystal Star, looking at you), but the writers had this tendency to find the lousy books, and retcon away the wackier things that happened (like retcons making Vergere's strange revelations about the true nature of the Force to be Sith heresies, and making Vergere herself a lost Sith).

The EU is why I didn't just stop watching Star Wars as a teenager, when I realized these various books and comics and games all referenced each others events and made for one big setting.

One thing I really fear about this is that DisneyTM will take a dump all over 20+ years of collected Star Wars canon and continuity.

To me, it's sounding like Star Wars ended on October 30, 2012. . .unless Disney can prove they don't have a cranial-rectal inversion about it (which I have absolutely zero confidence in).

Jim from Saint Paul: STOP ASKING FOR THE THRAWN TRILOGY. EVERYONE IS TOO OLD AND FAT TOO LOOK AS YOUNG AS THE WOULD NEED TO. ALSO, IF THEY RECAST EVERYONE, YOU KNOW THE SW COMMUNITY WOULD HATE THAT TOO.

I'd be fine with a recast, personally. Plenty of good actors out there that could use a Disney-fueled profile boost and/or image cleansing.

Albeit, I'm actually pretty much fine with the additions to the series in general. I mean, I'll complain about episodes 1, 2, and 3 if the subject comes up, or the meddling with the 'special editions', because all those things are in fact bad, but I'm no more upset about it than I am about Cloud Atlas being mediocre or The Master wasting three hours of my life for no purpose this year.

Basically, the SW properties have been demoted from something stand-out and epic in the world of science fantasy to to just another long-running science fiction IP. It doesn't bother me that some of them are great and some of them suck any more than that some of the Die Hard movies kick ass and others co-star Shia LeBouef.

What I'm saying here is that maybe Lucas' meddling turning something great into something mundane is in the end a good thing. I kinda feel like it's resulted in me, at least, growing up a little.

For me, having Star Wars under a new helm is like rescuing a child from an abusive home. "..don't worry star wars, George can't hurt you any more."

Also...fark no on the Trawn trilogy. He's a horrible, overused, overhyped, fanfap character. He's almost as bad as those force eating tree weasels.

Also.. I hope ever last author who wrote the Yujohn Vong (or however it's spelled...) stuff has their testicles eaten off by sloths. Rick Mccallum too. (him having his testicles eaten off.. not him being one of the sloths eating them off.)

You know, they could very well de-age Hamill, Ford and whoever else like they did with Jeff Bridges in that Tron movie.

I would love to see the Clone Wars team tackle a CGI Shadows of the Empire using the original cast for voice work.

A Boba Fett TV series could have a lot of potential. From dialogue in Empire, he and Vader obviously have some sort of history together. Have Fett tracking down surviving Jedi for the Empire, a job he would be more than happy to take after seeing his father's head lopped off by a lightsaber. Retcon those Wookie scalps hanging off his armor as Padawan braids. Vader pops in from time to time to take down the more powerful Jedi (sweeps week).

What will Disney's tolerance be of fan sites, fan films, fanfic, video game mods, Wookieepedia, and other free use of Star Wars IP that Lucas has tolerated for decades? Star Wars has gone from being one man's personal property to being assets of a publicly-traded company.

2012-10-30 07:42:40 PM
I really hope I don't come to regret saying (and feeling) this, but I do think this could actually end up being a good thing. Even if we end up with something along the lines of the Ewok movie, that'd be a big improvement over where the franchise has been taken with the last few movies. However, with my luck, this will probably mean new "animated" movies coming out, i.e. new CGI Clone Wars type stuff.
