Normally, I can chug coffee and be fine. But the coffee they use here at work...I donno, man. One cup and my heart feels like it's doing the Indy 500.

Also known as "light roast" in the US Navy.

I took some No-Doz the first time I had to work a midnight shift. After a couple hours when I was getting drowsy...I took some more. I think 5 tablets in total. About an hour later, my hands started shaking, and I turned about 3 shades of green, and started vomiting. I went to the ER, thinking I was going to die. Told them what happened, and they just laughed and laughed.

Was fine the next day, but damn, that was nasty.

She drank the equivalent of 4 (6 oz) cups of coffee, but because it came in a stimulant cocktail known as MONSTER, it's the caffeine that must be the problem, not her underlying medical condition, nor her parent's inability to inform their child of dietary restrictions.

and excessive aspirin has its bad side effects too. many a holes have been burnt into stomaches from people who take too much aspirin on a regular basis.

every drug had negative side effects. the only reason to take a drug is becaues the good side effects outweigh the bad ones. why take, for example, a cancer drug if you don't have cancer?

the best way? no drugs. but when you have problems, then sometimes a drug is necessary because the problem is worse than the negative side effects of the drug.

you're welcome.

The one time I ever took those caffeine pills I had the worst headache of my life. It kicked in about mid afternoon and was absolutely pounding... it was still around to some extent the next day. It was about 11 or 12 years ago and I still remember it, clear as day.

Fark that noise, I'm never touching those damn things ever again. I'll drink soda and tea (never have been able to like coffee), but I don't use energy drinks and I sure as hell don't use the pills. Not worth it.

This was one of those topics that came up at work a year ago - what is the physical substance that is caffeine, where does it come from, and how is it shipped, etc. etc.

Before the googling commenced, there were hypothesis of South American caffeine mines, large ocean-going bulk carriers where none of the crew members ever slept...

apparently it just comes from coffee processors as the residual of decaffenated coffee or as a naturally occurring part of other ingredients, which is much less interesting than my imagination.

As a young teenager (14? 15?) I once took about 15-20 Vivarins (200mg each) and didn't like it. At the ER they gave me activated charcoal, an IV line of something, I think a weak Valium, a heart monitor and a series of stern talkings-to by whichever hospital employee happened to read my chart. 2 or 3 people asked if I was trying to kill myself and didn't believe me when I said it's just that I couldn't find crystal meth; everybody, from nurse's aides to MD/PhDs, lamented my obvious lack of common sense and recommended serious counselling and perhaps appropriate medication.

To questions about suicidality I replied "People actually try to kill themselves with caffeine ODs? They must be crazy. I just wanted to zing along feeling better!" It's strictly from hunger, I swear.

If anybody were going to try to OD on caffeine it wouldn't be by drinking any beverage: instead swallow about two pounds of caffeine pills. And you'll probably die in excruciating thoractic misery with every muscle in your body twitching like a science experiment. Hanging myself from a plaground swingset would be much less trouble.

This is really rare. So, rare it took me several hours to find actual data. The NHS in the U. K. reported fewer than 2500 cases over ten years. There are 60M people in the U.K. People who were taking daily aspirin had a rate about 19% higher than people who weren't. In ALL cases, the patient also had H. pylori (causes stomach ulcers) in their system.

And on the third day, I started puking and gave that shiat up.

I found the caffeine website mentioned in the article the last time there was a Fark thread on caffeine.

Toxicity is usually measured in the lab in terms of LD50 or LD100, which is to say the dose which is lethal to 50% or 100% respectively of lab animals. Doses are measured in various ratios, normally milligrams or grams per kilogram of body weight. A kilogram is 2.2 pounds. There are less than 30 grams per ounce avoirdupois.

The amount of caffeine this kid consumed would normally not kill anybody. There must have been another factor or cause of death. Some people are very sensitive to caffeine, and if you have a heart condition you might have to be careful not to change your caffeine consumption quickly or by large amounts, but caffeine is unlikely to kill a normal coffee drinker drinking reasonable quantities.

Wikipedia says:

Extreme overdose can result in death.[63][64] The median lethal dose (LD50) given orally, is 192 milligrams per kilogram in rats. The LD50 of caffeine in humans is dependent on individual sensitivity, but is estimated to be about 150 to 200 milligrams per kilogram of body mass or roughly 80 to 100 cups of coffee for an average adult.[4] Though achieving lethal dose with caffeine would be exceptionally difficult with regular coffee, there have been reported deaths from overdosing on caffeine pills, with serious symptoms of overdose requiring hospitalization occurring from as little as 2 grams of caffeine. An exception to this would be taking a drug such as fluvoxamine or levofloxacin, which blocks the liver enzyme responsible for the metabolism of caffeine, thus increasing the central effects and blood concentrations of caffeine five-fold.[62][63][64][65] Death typically occurs due to ventricular fibrillation caused by effects of caffeine on the cardiovascular system.

In Futurama, Frye consumed a barely sub-lethal dose for a large man, but he is a freak and a Toon. His abuse of his body makes it likely that he can survive things which would kill a normal Toon. Besides, he has died a number of times already, so he may be slowly habituated to death and resurrection by cloning, rebirth, or season renewal or other methods that work well on Toons.

Here, for your Halloweeny enjoyment, is an illustration of the effects of caffeine on spiders:

upload.wikimedia.org

As you can see, caffeine makes spiders much spookier. A normal, healthy spider is anal-rententive to a fault.

I took about 8 200mg pills one time over the span of 2 hours during a long drive one time. That is a retarded amount of caffeine and it takes about many hours to get it out of your system. To be fair here (I read the article) the coroner cited it as a "contributing factor" in her death. Which, since she apparently had some funky heart condition that was sensitivite to caffiene, it was. Stupid article makes it sound like caffiene (and Monster drink) was the cause of her death. If decaf coffee tasted worth a shiat, I'd drink it instead of regular. Haven't found good decaf yet.

Walt_Jizzney: natazha: Linux_Yes: and excessive aspirin has its bad side effects too. many a holes have been burnt into stomaches from people who take too much aspirin on a regular basis.

How much is too much? A pill?

Aspirin isn't near as dangerous as acetaminophen, but be careful with taking anything. Including caffeine, which enhances the effects of aspirin when taken in the proper amounts.

Honestly, I love the taste of Red Bull, but I'm glad it's amped to the gills with caffeine so I'm not tempted to drink it all that often. I would bet most drinkers of your drinks are ex- alcohol/caffeine drinkers. I can tell from experience that even if there are just times when you have to be off alcohol and/or caffeine the alternatives at least satisfy the behavioral component of drinking "real" beer/coffee. Hell, there can even be a placebo effect.

That's what I thought too. Is that available everywhere? I picked some up at a Flea Market in Ottawa, Ontario. I thought it was a local thing.

So tasty.

As for caffeine, I admit to being an addict, and drinking, say, a Monster sometimes makes me very irritable (per coworkers) but nearly superhuman in productivity and awareness. (In all likelyhood it's also a frickin' long day in the field with little food, no shelter, and a lot of work...) I'm also fairly certain I've sidestepped into a tangent dimension once or twice after having had a Monster, then a coffee, and possibly a pop or two. But hello; it's a drug, it modifies biological processes, and while the risks are nil, I'mI snorted in derision when the voice behind the mike suggested more regulations on sales to minors. If they do that, will they also ensure that the same regs apply to every vending machine, Tim Hortons, and restaurant where coffee might be had?

Don't regulate, educate!

I do admit the stuff is addictive though, I try every so often to kick the habit (the only good thing about a flu is it masks the caffeine withdrawl), but my work shifts often run into the 12-15 hour range, with no food. I need some stims. Rage only takes me so far.

FTFA - Including caffeine in soft drinks and energy drinks piggybacks on the dependence that coffee, tea, cola and chocolate have created with their natural caffeine content. The effect most people conflate with caffeine stimulation, James wrote, is primarily "withdrawal reversal," which lends the sensation of a small high when, in reality, "the person is merely restored to how they would have been feeling had they not been a caffeine consumer in the first place."

BULLshiat.

The idea that most people don't actually get more energy from caffeine is just so silly that I can't believe they even put that nonsense in the article.

There is a placebo effect from decaf. Same with going to weak cigarettes. It's an oral fixation that primes dopamine release.

And I do drink regular coffee for the taste. Before I found out benydril is a dopamine reuptake inhibitor and started popping them in leiu of a proper antidepressant caffeine did absolutely nothing for me except make me pee. I could slam really strong coffee all morning long or take a bunch of caffeine pills and still want to go to sleep. Now I get a buzz off nicotene and caffeine keeps me going.

I had to drop caffeine last year due to an inner ear virus that would send me into vertigo anytime I drank it. And I used to drink a lot of coffee. But, I missed my morning coffee while reading up on e-mail and the news, so I switched to decaf, and lo and behold it turns out the placebo effect is almost as good at waking you up but without any jitters or bouncing around.

There's a bunch of local roasters here with decaf roasts that are just as good as the normal. The key to good coffee, of any type, is freshest roast you can get and grind your own beans. Tastes great.

It's been a year now and I can drink the occasional caffeinated espresso, but in the morning, I still do the decaf thing.

What I don't get is caffeine free soda. It's like "hmm, I want a product that rots my teeth, gets me fat off empty calories and tastes like shiat but I don't want to feel good while doing so. Oh look.

I think you missed the point about 'soft drinks'. They're supposed to just taste good. Prior to Coke -- with it's legal cocaine added as a 'pick-me-up' tonic, soft drinks consisted of seltzer water and a sweet, fruit flavored syrup. A cold glass of seltzer water was a frequent purchase in old time 'Malt shops'.

I'm not real sure when soda companies started adding caffeine. I do recall the Coke/Pepsi wars though and folks getting hooked on Pepsi as their morning 'coffee'. Then, along came 'Mountain Dew'.

Coffee smells heavenly when being brewed. It tastes great when properly prepared with cream and sugar. Though big business has managed to turn out an astonishing amount of cheap, crappy coffee pots that can reduce good coffee to paint thinner in a matter of minutes. The worst offender being those huge, aluminum, tubular coffee pots with the external spout, usually found in meeting halls, churches and at AA meetings that brew about a gallon at once and rapidly burn it beyond recognition.

(I think they use them at AA meetings as a form of punishment.)

I cut my coffee intake down decades ago, getting tired of the irritability it gave me along with trembling hands.

I suspect that much of it's popularity came from not only the scent of it being brewed, but, as folks started getting up earlier to work and going to bed later, the caffeine helped shake the cobwebs out of their brains and get them rolling. In the long run, you can still be tired though jumpy after guzzling too much coffee.

roc6783: gopher321: Remember folks! Decaf is the tool of the devil!

I have never understood the desire to drink non-alcoholic beer or decaf coffee. Who the hell drinks those because they taste good?

I wouldn't drink beer again regular, lite or alchol free because it tastes (to me) what I imagine piss would taste like... None of it tastes good to me. I will happily drink wine or Amaretto though.

Because of a medical issue I've had to cut back. I get to have one cup in the morning, I don't become a part of the human race until the Coffee Goddess has blessed me. It's like Night of the Living Dead, not pretty folks... Any additional coffee I drink is decaf but I rarely have a second cup. But do I need that one!

Am I the only one who was confused by this?

FTA: the two people who died in New Mexico--a woman who might've used caffeine to cut intravenous drugs, and a man whose family said he ingested a bottle of sleeping pills--both had concentrations 100 times higher.

A bottle of sleeping pills had a high concentration of caffeine? You're doing it wrong.

Full pot of coffee before I leave the house, 6-8 16 oz cups during the day, for 25ish years. It is still the greatest substance this earth has yet created.

It is comments like this which keep me on FARK. Washing down 3 or 4 dexamphetamines with a Thai redbull at breakfast, then having a coffee when I get to work keeps me level and calm.

ISO15693: pute kisses like a man: xanadian: Winterlight: Cythraul: Like Iocane powder, I think I've rendered myself immune to the damaging effects of caffeine.

Inconceivable!

That word...I do not think it means what you think it means.

/off to go get me some more death juice

at night, after work, if I have a strong cup of coffee it sends me straight to sleep. in the morning, it is the lifeblood from which I flow.

Do you have ADD?

The answer is obviously yes (the only question really, is whether it has been professionally diagnosed)

Don't give us that shiat. Unless you're in a deep-sea diving rig or a space suit, you can always pack a couple of Clif bars in your toolbox or your pockets.
