IIRC 9/11 was the last time an election was postponed (in NYC). 9/11 happened on NYC's primary day

Based on what I've seen last night - some areas are going to require massive aid. I can't imagine that we would continue to hold the election as planned. I can't imagine electronic voting machines to be in full effect.

It would take an act of congress to postpone the presidental election and thats not going to happen. Local and state elections are a different matter.

If the mid atlantic areas stay without power next week, is it possible NY might actually go red from upstate voting?

I caught up on it. Yeah, things are fine. All we got up here in Maine was a whole lot of wind.

Oh please no. I was counting on this circus to be over next week. Congress won't postpone it anyway. It being difficult to get out and vote in NY can only help the republicans.

The financial markets are going to take quite a battering when they reopen. Especially insurance companies. Maybe the construction industry will get a bump from all the repairs and rebuilding.

I don't see how they could hold a fair election with all this disaster. It should be postponed.

Voting is 7 days away. I am pretty sure we can get everything up and running by then. If not, maybe we can have the national election on the 6th and delay it for the states that were hurt most by it. Postponing the election on the 6th may throw into chaos rural areas and their plans for the election.

It's kind of funny that Sandy is pretty much hitting mostly blue states. Avoided the Deep South almost entirely. One of Romney's younger and more intelligent staffers must've hacked into Obama's Weather Machine. It's the only explanation for why Sandy took a hard left just outside of New Jersey.

There's a lot of recovery that needs to happen. Not sure I would expect regular community systems to be in order enough to allow people to plan out the election stuff. Since states control the election process, whether NY and/or NJ postpone wouldn't effect anyone else outside of those areas. They fundamentally have till 12-11 to get it sorted.

TFA"Since the United States Constitution grants states the authority to administer all elections, even federal elections, the federal government does not explicitly possess the power to suspend or postpone a presidential election."

I'm shocked we made it this far into the day without an American "Thinker" link to an article titled "Did Obama use the CIA's Weather Dominator to engineer Hurricane Sandy to make it easier for him to declare Martial Law and name himself King-For-Life?" with a sidebar about how he used his Mind Control Device to force Chris Christie to say nice things about the president on TV.

Has anyone ventured over to the vast wasteland of freeperville to see if they are claiming this is the way "0bummer" is going to institute martial law and postpone the election indefinitely, thereby installing himself as dictator for life?

Aaiyee!!!

And a glance up-thread holds little reassurance for sane thought.

Sadly, no, not sadly... ummmmm... predictably. That's it. Predictably. Predictably each "side" will look at these events and try to determine what course of action might best benefit their favored candidate and/or party. To put it nicely, it disgusts me.

I think there's gonna be a whole buncha childish whining from both camps especially highlighted by those individuals who weren't all that committed to voting anyway.

Cue the OMG-OMG graphics and the talking heads on the idiot-box.

But that's just me.

I believe Corsi lives near the east coast, so it's probable that the stores are still closed and he already used his tinfoil supply sealing the windows.

You know, as it should be, these things are best worked through at the state and local level. My greatest GRRRRRR will happen if the feds step in to override "the People" if/when/where it benefits any "properly aligned" candidate.

Shame we're all boogered up on the politics rather than focusing on those waking up this morning to a new and different world, eh?

I'm done with the politics of Mother Nature.

Fair warning, Farkers, don't p*ss me off by saying something stupid.

If you need to postpone the election by four years in order to see what Taxbongo has done to this country, then by all means, give him four more years. We have to get this clown out of office before he takes a second term.

There are two. Gov. Cuomo for NY and Gov. Christie for NJ. Fed doesn't control elections. Of course, the President decided to stay in DC and oversee federal response to the disaster, I'm sure there will be plenty of support if/when those Governors request it.

I, for one, appreciate Krymson Tyde's self-sacrifice in providing live reports directly from that hostile territory.

But as for the topic, it's not something Obama can even suggest. For obvious reasons.

I don't know how severe the damage will be when this storm is over.
I don't know whether, by Tuesday, it will cause some people to be unable or unwilling to vote.
I don't know whether campaigning for this election is now essentially over.
I don't know if some polling places will be unable to function due to lack of power.
I don't know what the political ramifications of this storm are.

Really, there are only two things of which I can be certain:
If the date of the election is changed, it will be an outrageous attempt to steal the election and Republicans will be justifiably outraged.
If the date of the election isn't changed, it will be an outrageous attempt to steal the election and Republicans will be justifiably outraged.

the Tragedy is that almost half this Nation thinks Rmoney is going to do something for them when his entire history clearly shows that he's done only for himself and his rich friends.

now that is pathetic.

never underestimate the power of a public education system that's been degrading over the last 30 years AND the power of a "news" media that is owned by Big Buisness.

and Big Business wants that Turd Rmoney in office so they can continue to exploit this Nation and its citizens. Obama wanted them to do their share and be responsible.

they are not interested in that.
