You don't get it do you? The Media Bullsh*t will find you. That's what it does. That's all it does. You can't stop it. It'll wait for you, slit your throat, and pull your farking heart out!!!

Listen, and understand. The Media Bullsh*t is out there. It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead.

2012-10-30 08:22:03 AM
As long as Fark is up, who cares?

WTF is leves supposed to mean?

2012-10-30 08:36:27 AM
Step 1: No DR plan in place.
Step 2: No geo redundancy
Step 3: ?????
Step 4: No profit!

2012-10-30 08:37:31 AM
I find it hilarious that Gawker has its head so far up New York's ass that they never even considered that it might be a good idea to have some backup servers located somewhere like Colorado.

...and the internet, for a while, will be a better place. Slightly

Hope that they can recover swiftly and that not too much damage has been done. Also hope losing half the links here doesn't affect FARK too much.

Good.

They'll probably use the downtime to roll out another redesigned site and commenting system designed by crazed Eastern European convicts.

Farkers could start linking to the actual content instead of a 3 sentence blurb of gawkers analysis with a link to the content.

Great idea, having all your servers in a high risk area, with no redundancy.

Idiots.

That is unnecessarily cruel to crazed Eastern European convicts.

Who?

2012-10-30 09:05:26 AM
I worked for a newspaper in Charleston with the same philosophy. I was in charge of all their websites. The server room was on the first floor, in a flood area. No redundancy.

I bought a replacement server and arranged for someone in Texas with a cage in in a building on a backbone to house it. I even mailed the server to them. When I left three years later, they still had no backup.

IT Director saw me as overstepping my bounds and just wouldn't do it.

He may be working for HuffPo now. ;)

Other than missing out on the Snacktaku and Culture Smash articles on Kotaku, I can't seem to give a single fark over losing Gawker Media.

Destructoid, RPS and Escapist are all up and doing fine. At least I can get the majority of my gaming and gadget news without the constant fellating of Nintendo and Apple.

/if only Engadget had gone down too
//burn the shills!!!

I glance through Gizmodo and Jalopnik daily, but welcome suggestions for different sites.

Gawker sure knows how to fill a page with scripts. Damn!

But without Giz, where will all the appleheads boast about pre-ordering their ipad minis?

God, what are we going to do without worthless content aggregators? Link to actual articles??

It's quite a bit slower on the update, but Anandtech does quite thorough gadget reviews. As for auto-related sites, I can't be much help. The auto world moves so slowly that there just isn't enough news worth reading on a daily basis. I tend to prefer getting first-hand knowledge of any vehicle that isn't a premium exotic, rather than reading about it. A few friends like to follow autoblog, but I don't have any experience with it.

Gawker sites are the tabloids of their respective fields. They update much more frequently, but there's less actual information. I guess they serve their purpose, but they're so poorly laid out and constructed...

Molavian: Who?

IDK either. As soon as the rain lets up, I'll go see what they are. I gather they are some kind of fan-fic sites or something.

Thanks!
I do a bit of surfing around, but I've sort of fallen into the habit of easy fluff for brain candy.

Other sites I like
http://phys.org/physics-news/
http://www.gizmag.com/
http://thekneeslider.com/
http://slashdot.org/

but yah, Jalopnik, Gizmodo, Lifehacker are my Gawker candy.
